How many is too many?

Ok here goes......well I have just gone and bought another car today - is a '97 Renno Clio 1.9D(isaster), plenty of M.o.T and that, all serviced well etc.It's just got me thinking...this is the 22nd car I have bought in my 9 years driving experience. I have had mostly small cars but have had the odd sporty ones too (944, Impreza WRX and MR2)I get the feeling that I can't 'settle down' with a car, and that I'm going to be changing cars forever rather than just stick with something that I enjoy driving. I sold the MR2 because it was highly impractical for me and not that good on petrol so it's not as though it was for any trivial reason. I don't want to keep changing cars all the time it's gone past the point of joking now and I seriously think that something is wrong with me.Bottom line is that I bought the Clio purely because it's a Diesel and I don't have to fill it up every half an hour, and I can get a bloody suitcase in the boot too.Am I alone in thinking this way or do some of you lot feel the same?

They aren't even that economical, sorry! I don't think I managed anything greater than low 40s mpg in mine, but I did hash it about.Mine was quite interesting to drive, I don't know if it's the weight distribution of the nose-heavy diesel or just the way all Clios are but it was great for lift-off oversteer.

There's nowt wrong with you, perfectly rational behaviour in fact.I expect you'll find the right car eventually that's a mix of reliability/economy and everyday-usability. Until then just enjoy driving different cars round, it's great fun.Personally I find having one main car and then something else for fun/weekends works best.

That's quite normal, My wife had it as I've wasted so much money over the years on cars, I just get bored of them and fancy a change all the time, I had a nice ST24 for a while but that was killing me with the fuel costs last year! I think this is the first time since i past my test in 1997 that i own a couple of cars that I'm happy with, Apart from the 1602 but that's only because I've had so much problems with it and it spend most of last summer off the road.

I haven't totalled mine up lately, but I'm probably over 40 now, and much less than 40 in years! (well, nine...)Marriage didn't stop me either - it just stopped me getting in so much debt, so I tend to buy loads of shite now. Which is nice actually!I also find it hard to settle down with a car. Only two have really managed it so far - the 2CV and the BX, though a Pug 306 lasted a good couple of years, which is forever in my book.By the time I was 21, I'd somehow managed to own 14 A-series Citroens but I tend to stick at just the one now.

In my brief experience of the oilburning 1.9 clio, it matches my 1.6 R5 oilburner, on a motorway at under 65mph the MPG is good but at over 70mph it's quite poor. If it's got the 'pre-heating' type fuel filter then you can run some cooking oil through it as well (I wouldn't recommend more than 25%), which improves the cost a bit as well.

make yourself up some angels then but then you will need a sh1te forklift to get em up there

I do have racking (3 high) in one shed- built many years ago by a very competent welder. And it does mean I can leave some nice cars up there safely.But getting them up/down is a complete nightmare-

Wow, I've already remembered three more that weren't originally on the list. Wonder how many more will pop up?Couldn't possibly name a favourite - the 1983 Escort van holds a special place in my heart as it was my first, and the Volvo 164 I've had for 6 1/2 years which is a record (apart from the mobylette which I've had for 15 years). And the Renner Six, 'cos my dad had one when I was a kid. Other favourites included the Cadillac STS, the DAF 33, the Renault Novaquatre (until I melted the engine ), the Innocenti, the CX Turbo, and the diesel 406 just because it was so bloody cheap to buy and run.
