If she were mine... I might be tempted to keep her as is (at least for a while) for the Alpine look!

Judging from that angle, it's probably an import.

About to bite the bullet on this (£895 BIN). http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ROVER-820-VITESSE ... 3365a0fae2

Looks lovely, but the guy (or rather his friend, who he's selling it for) doesn't haven't any service history to back up the SUPA-LO mileage - he's going to email me the dates/mileages on the MOTs (which he has "most" of). Also a slight disconnect between his story about buying it off the original owner, and the 3 previous owners listed in the details. Also also his mate is selling ANOTHER car through him (an old Polo).

Other than that it all seems fairly good, though in the (pretty shit) pics the engine bay doesn't exactly scream 43k. I think I can see traces of the slight oil leak around the HG which is apparently common on these, and nothing to get too worked up about. Remote locking doesn't work and an ABS light comes on "occasionally" (again common - sensors are not durable).

He's up in Geordieland, which means I'll have to buy it unseen. Is that stupid?

I LOLLED it up big the first time I scan-read the ad, and thought the owner was referring to himself in these words:

Keith will be happy to answer any extra questions, he may also be able to provide extra photos.

Pick up within 5 days please and no offers of swaps as Keith does not want any other cars.

I'd post a wanted ad on rover800.info or whatever the forum is called to see if anyone there has a nice one they want to sell. That one looks OK, but I'd be wanting to check if the gearbox howls like a Moulinex Magimix.

No love for the Honda-engined 827?

best avoid that one though.

That 'carswithnoreserve' outfit are either fuckwits who know nothing about cars or blatant crooks who tell whopping fibs / omit very important information. I have my suspicions which of those options it is.

Can't you find all those online with VOSA? Not tried it myself, like...

In other news, the 929 Stacker has been on for ages (re-listed again) with no bids at £895, fully MOT'd, and the only sniffs he's had are from the oval :(

JUST TO ANSWER A FEW QUESTIONS, I WILL NOT SELL THIS CAR FOR LESS THAN THE OPENING BID (SORRY TO ALL THE BANGER DRIVERS WHO HAVE EMAILED AND CALLED)

Really, does no-one fancy it? I'd have thought that would have been snaffled up double-quick.

** LAND ROVER SERIES 1 (1956) **

£1500

would swap for a car

I am selling my Land Rover Series 1 86 (1956).

Now, before you start bidding on this, it has had some restoration.

It has a 2L diesel engine from a Daihatsu Fourtrak, power steering fitted and it has disk brakes.

The fuel tank is in the back, which is made out of steel checker plate. In addition it has a new shassy, also from a Daihatsu Fourtrak. The shassy is almost identical to the original and a perfect fit.

All in all, this is an amazing Land Rover, much better than when it was new However, it is not yet registered with the new shassy so there for you need to take it to VOSA i think to get it changed over and will take about 2 weeks to do. as It is now it has 6 months MOT and 6 months tax.

I am wanting to buy a more suitable family vehicle (as it only has 2 seats!) hence me selling it.

Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any further questions, I would be more than happy to answer them or if you would like to see it

Checkerplate fuel tank...

If that's just a Landy body sitting on a Daihatsu shassy then it could legitimately carry the Fourtrack's registration...

More modern running gear in a classy looking body.... whats not to like (other than the price)

^ Surely those headlamps are too low to be legal? Or does it not matter on pre-'73 stuff?

No such thing, either a 3Y/4Y 2 litre petrol or a DL 2.8 diesel.

General view on rover800.info (and other places) seems to be that the 820 T16 lump is the most dependable, and the easiest/cheapest to fix if things do go wrong. Plus I just RILLY RILLY want a turbo. Wor Keith's Vitesse has been flagged up on the rover800 eBay thread and they seem to like the look of it. I'd already emailed Wor Keith asking about gearbox whine and he insists there is none.

KruJoe - reg isn't enough to get you the MOT history: VOSA also want an MOT test number or the V5C ref no. I might ask Wor Keith for the former. He still hasn't replied to my request about the MOT mileages, which is giving me slight coldness of the feet.

Gotta say, i'm not getting a warm feeling about Wor Keith, he seems a bit too much of a geezer to me, ah reckon 'ee sounds leyk a birruva 'worky-ticket' and that, y'knaa. The car might be perfectly OK, but it doesn’t sound like one i'd want to buy unseen.

Posted

Beginning to agree with that assessment. Wor Keith seems a little fishy - in a little dishy.

I need to get a grip on this weird and ratcheting obsession, and stop myself doing something foolish (like buying any sort of car before I've flogged the Maestro). Will probably take r.welfare's sound advice and stick a wanted post up on the rover800 site.

I really, really want this V6 estate. Can only hope it's still around in a couple of months' time, or at least one like it. Early ones old enough for me to insure as a classic. It's on Autotrader for £1299, search for yourself if you're interested enough.

Going to view this tomorrow. Dealer selling it seems decent enough and apparently the previous owner who p/ex'd it through a Toyota dealership is very keen to know it goes to a good home and has provided answers to questions I had via the dealer.

Seems like the right car for what I want, mileage of 128k isn't a great concern with the history it has and I don't intend for it to be my daily. I'd be buying it a bit earlier than I'd really hoped which will stretch my finances and Mrs SL's patience a bit, and I'll end up with the bizarre situation of having three T&Ted Camrys until I sell the Sport, but this sad business with Si on RR has made me focus on actually achieving a few ambitions rather than daydreaming about them. A combination of scrap values, high fuel prices and the V6's desirability for MR2 conversions means these are going to disappear in the next few years, and I'd rather buy the right one when it's available than not find one in the future and regret it.

Anyone want to buy a Camry 2.2 Sport?...
