A CO2 extinguisher discharged into the air intake in theory might kill the engine via oxygen starvation, however I suspect the thermal shock of the cold CO2 would cause just as much damage as letting it go bang.

this car was owned my an elderly gent from 1997 the service history is rediculous it was serviced from1993 at 5483/6540/8691/10035/12994/14244/then to much more to list but basicly 8 pages from the same garage with 5 items per page the oil is clear (obviously) and the engine is quiet the only bad is a few scuffs and indicator needs replacing £19.99 on ebay new

Even when the Mondeo's price became tolerable due to local construction, the Sonata wiped the floor with it for sales. Even now, the current Mondeo has been shunned by the Chinese market due, apparently, to the slanty eye reference made unwittingly by the headlamp design. Concerning the runaway renner engines , the fire extinguisher idea is a good one, but I would like to suggest using a water-based extinguisher rather than a CO2 one. Piping water directly into the inlet manifold will stop the engine more quickly and therefore more safely. In fact the concerned 2.2DCi owner could keep an old office fire extinguisher in the boot with a ¾†diameter pipe permanently drilled and tapped into the intake manifold, and a tap beside the drivers seat. When the inevitable engine runaway happens, simply wait till a speed of 4500rpm or more revs has been sustained for a period of 10 seconds or more, then open the tap quickly to bring the engine down to a controlled ‘stop’.
