Autoshite motor museum--- what shite would we HAVE to have

A Mk5 to Fred is probably a Mk2 on its third facelift to everybody else.

NO!

The SVBM also has a Sherpa Coupé- apart from the one on the transporter of course.

You've genuinely made my day there with that picture. I was only thinking about the 'boat tail' Sherpa this very morning. The firm I once worked for used to have one exactly like that when I were a tyre fitter yonks back and they then 'progressed' to a Sherpa 200 (with a 1.7 '0' series lump) and then to an LDV 300 thing with a 2.5 Peugeot engine that felt like a Ferrari compared to the others!

Sad I know but I'd absolutely love one of those Sherpa pick-ups.

Could be done out like a 1990's auction with 'lot numbers' scrawled on the windscreen and traces of turtle wax left in all the rust blebs and in the e-marks on the light clusters. Also have some miserable old bastard pushing a shopping trolley round with two car batteries in it. Pay him £3 an hour or something.

I think I had the ideal candidate for this yard of shite!

Called Terry, and included the all important stickers:

I regret ever selling this van.... I was a fool of the highest order :(:(

If one can be found, I'd love to see a Hyundai Stellar in faded blue with a rotten bonnet front edge or some crash damage, that or a Samba cabriolet 8)

I'd like to see the ill-fated early attempts at selling diesels to the British public.e.g. Standard Vanguard Diesel, Austin Cambridge Diesel, Rover 2400 SD Turbo, etc.

I'm not joking when I say the SVBM fits most of the criteria, except that it's mostly buses of course. It's well worth a visit if you find yourself in the area. Entry and the old-skool café are stupidly cheap.

You've pretty much described Stondon Motor Museum, I love it there.

I think the descriptions so far are a cross between Stondon and the magical Pembrokeshire motor museum

Ha, ha! Despite living within a gnats fingernail of Stondon , I had never visited the museum but then just before Christmas I did go for a peek. It's the only museum I've ever been to where the exhibits actually have rainwater dripping on them causing them to rust........don't think I've seen so much tat crammed into a small area. I'm trying to remember if there was just one item without rust , dents or just general crud all over it........nope, don't think there was one.Having said that, there was some top old chod there, including Daf 44, Polonez!!!!, Talbot Sunbeam AND Alpine, Allegro, Viva HA(sitting under a particularly nasty roof leak), Viceroy (that wasn't too bad actually!), Maxi, funny looking off-road type mini Metro thing(?).......Also, the cafe is really naff aswell ...a few old wooden chairs and tables with plazzie flowers in the middle.......but with a really pretentious name...Bramptons? or something......If you read the little brochure, it says that they can organise for parties of 25 or more to have a butchers round and they will provide a finger buffet...or will book you in at the Indian up the road so you can spend the whole morning looking round the "museum", have lunch, then spend the whole afternoon looking round aswell.Personally, I struggled to stay a couple of hours there.....Slightly better is the Vauxhall Heritage Centre in Luton...at least the cars look half-decent...LUVVERLY mint Viscount. Hardly ever open to the public but should be open on Drive It Day, whenever that is...April sometime?.

Can I put in a claim for my favourite, the Aston Transport Museum in Birmingham, to be transported lock stock and barrel to the Autoshite Museum. No cars there unfortunately, but it is in an old tram shed, complete with rails. They rarely spoil any thing by over-restoring it, or even restoring it for that matter, so it fits the bill on that count. Just check out the list of vehicles for the Sentinel bus (shuttle service from the remains of nearby Duddeston station) and the Austin A40 ice-cream van (light refreshments):

Holy......... a Maserati Kyalami, theres only like 2 in this country.

Bizzarely, the for sale section includes a 1988 Mazda with MOT valid until mid 2005, hmmm doubt it will be like that anymore.

I want to visit this place! They are lacking in vans though.

Looks the bees knees that place. Whats that other motor museum full of odd ball shite with the funny double-barelled name?

For me Stondon is beating Gaydon for possible location for this summer's official Autoshite summertime jamboree. Maybe it's a little too far south for many but it seems to be just right, I dunno. Very easy for transport links for sure.

Posted

It's 180 miles from here, but not much further than Gaydon in real terms. Extra £10 each way at most. So yeah, I'd do that.

I took the kids there and they loved it, but it's very strange. Where else could you get a family photo like this - your loving children in front of a knackered old bus with the bonnet up

Gyrocopter - the day before we'd seen the James Bond film with Little Nellie

Posted Image

mmmmm perhaps the ugliest car in the world - fantastic. Why don't more museums go for the "engine in a barrow" display?

Posted Image

Check out the exotica!

Small cars - ideal for getting lots of them in the photo if you don't have different lenses :D

I'd be very much up for a Stondon museum meet as it's only a 2 hour drive for me, I've never heard of the place before neither.

Thought I'd put together my list of definitive Autoshite, the ones that would be first in my tat museum. With the possible exception of the Strada which is here for its quirky looks and (in non-Abarth form) enjoys a similar level of obscurity to the others, none of them were particularly successful in the UK market or (arguably) particularly good cars compared with their competition. All have all but disappeared from our roads, none have a strong enthusiast following and all are Gold Star winning spots.I'd have plenty of other stuff in the collection too, but these are the core of AS for me:Talbot TagoraChrysler 180Simca 1301Mitsubishi TrediaDatsun StanzaHonda QuintetPeugeot 604Renault 14Fiat StradaFiat ArgentaAlfa 90Alfa SixLonsdaleDaihatsu CharmantYugo Sana

Would agree 100% with the above..... but would probably add:Dacia DenemFSO 1300Lada 1600ESVauxhall ViceroyYugo 511Datsun 240 K SkylineSimca 1000 (square headlight model)Simca 1100LXChrysler HunterChrysler Avenger GLSLancia Gamma saloonLancia 2000HFRenault 6Renault 16TXChrysler AlpinePeugeot 204/304Cortina Mk1 Woody ... plus an exclusive area done out in the style of a showroom circa 1982 featuring every Talbot in every trim level and colour ever made... .....I would charge extra for this section just to keep out all the riff-raff

I would have to add a Mitsubishi Galant Sapporo if it were mine. And a Lancia Trevi.
