I'm old enough to remember those days, when it was possible and even legal to be marque-loyal to a brand that wasn't German.  This is exactly why BMC put their cars out with the various badges on, even though it was 99% the same car; a practice we now universally ridicule.  It's probably also part of the reason behind VAG keeping their assorted sub-brands alive, although we all know they're Golfs.
