Aye, trailing arm bearings. Bugger to change i'm afraid.

This be tru I'm afraid. The n/s/r does look pretty bad, be worth getting it done asap. GSF used to do the kits but not sure if they still have them in stock. One of the BXC/BXP gang will probably have one or know where to get one. Drop Doc a pm, he's an absolute wizzard with BX stuff.

The leak on the front might be a return pipe which (from memory) aren't too bad to do.

A very cheap Porsche 928 has came up for sale close by and I've always wanted one. I know someone on here has one but I can't remember who it is.

If you are that 928 owner PLEASE come forth and give advice on what parts costs and availability are like as this one for sale's a right stinker.

It's Mike D IIRC. Might be worth dropping him a pm?

BX leak looks like the "trousers" on the strut.

Leaning wheels is the trailing arm bearings, fo'sho.

The Porsche's 928's sold now, which is frankly a bit of a relief. It was only £900 and a manual, which is unusual but it was a right grotty old shit box, which was yellow, didn't run and probably would have ruined my life. Still fancied it though.

A bit of a mixed bag today. I went to try to patch up some of the small holes in my SD1 and inevitably they turned out to be massive holes.

Grotty. This was under at least an inch of glen miller. The car looks to have had a rear quarter sometime in it's distant past, which has partially to blame for this grot fest.

Chopped it all out. I've chopped more out since I took this picture. I've since remembered I'm a shit welder so this is going to fun putting it back together again.

I'm a bit downheared by it all to be honest as although this is the worst bit on the car it's going to a pain to build back up.

Finally the good news. My 3 series has had it's rear quarters painted. The arches had started to go and there was another couple of bleps. This ones for selling so it was worth the effort. I did all the prep myself and they nice fella painted it for £50 including paint. Bargain or what?

Does anyone recognise these heater controls? Clock looks like a Capri one but I can't place the heater controls.

Due to work being very slow today, I took some time out to have a go at parts of The Volvo's paintwork with the Meguiars Deep Crystal 3 Step System that I bought for the car as an anniversary gift last December, as although the paint's shiny enough (a testament to Volvo's paint quality and the fact I've polished the car at least twice a year since I've owned it), it is beginning to go Pogweasel Pink in places, notably on the tops of the front wings. The results were GR9:

s640x480

Hopefully, the rest of the paintwork will come up up just as well. I'll find out later in the week.

I'm probably going to bung some linseed oil on the bumpers at some point, too ;)

Ah, I shall watch your Swede-buffing progress with interest, if you'll pardon the expression. The Saab has typical paint-fade in places, mostly the bonnet and roof. Nothing major, but the deep colour shine has definitely departed.

*grin*

I imagine that your Saab's paintwork would come up GR9000 if you gave it a good going over - Volvo and Saab solid red paint will nearly always be able to be made to shine again, no matter how neglected it is :)

saturday when driving home i heard something bounce along the bottom of the car, i thought it was a biggish stone or piece of wood. This morning the alternator belt started sqealing. a bolt missing from the front of the block, where the alternator bracket attaches. quickly solved.

IM037853.jpg

then i had to take the wing off as the previous owner had fastened the wing (usually bolted and screwed) with some bolts but mostly tack welds and snot, the front lower edge gave way recently (as the valance is rotting) and then the rear lower edge of the same wing broke free. door post panel is extensively welded and the screw holes to 3 self tapers had to be redrilled.

i did think about adding a new black hadrians wing, but thought it too 'scene' so stuck with the 'sprayed on my drive on a slightly windy day' pattern wing thats not quite the same colour as the rest of the car

Triumph Acclaim (as is that choke knob, I think)

Other things to worry about:

the creak is from the back.

Probably rear arm bearings then, are the wheels leaning in at all at the back.

Yep, that's what I guessed:

An occasional slight creak, and a tiny hint of negative camber is leading me to suspect the trailing arm bearings

Does anyone have a more informed diagnosis / treatment / prognosis?

Thankyouplease.

Ive heard that its easier to get a good secondhand axle and swap the whole thing over, much cheaper too!

the clock underneath looks like a ford one, from a capri / escort centre console

heater controls could well be caprescorti

You're right! Nice work, I bow to your superior PK. As well as Warren T's correct observation that they 'look Japanese' :)

New Micra has eaten its gearbox in a big way. On the way to taking us to gatwick on holiday. Managed to persuade breakdown driver to drop us off and drop the car back at home. Costs us £150 for that pleasure plus another £80 wasted on parking not needed and £60 on a cab on the way back. Why do I buy old cars again?

Need to work out whether I get another or get the gearbox fixed. Hmmm

you mean you paid eighty quid for parking an old Micra in a field?!? What's public transport for?

Next time, have a look at the bus routes (people working for minimum wage at airport shops obviously don't pay a tenner just to park for the day) and park for free in a nearby village/residential area.

It's even better if you're travelling with other people- you drop them off with luggage at the terminal, go to park while they 're having a coffee (or queuing for check-in if you're flying longhaul in economy class and couldn't do it online) and come back to the airport by bus. I'd offer you specific location suggestions, but I've only flown from Gatwick 2-3 times and have never needed to park there. If anyone's interested, feel free to PM me for excellent shite-friendly solutions for BHX, MAN and LHR. :D

Busy weekend!!

My mate is moving up from Sussex and lodging at our house until he gets some cash together, so we've been sorting his stuff out. He bought my old Series IIA Landy a couple of months ago and it has been sat on the drive since, burst into life first punch of the button and he's taken it back down to Brighton with him to run about in until he moves up next weekend.

In between farting about with the above and having BBQs I got a bit done on my '52 as seen earlier in the thread! Roofs back on as we need the shed space to get a low loader in later in the week.

I took the G for it's first long trip in quite a while yesterday. We went to visit Basildon Park near Pangbourne.

P1020036.jpg

On the way back we stopped off for dinner at a Harvester in Reading and as there was an oldie in the car park, it seemed only proper to park next to it.

P1020043.jpg

You can't see it, but the Corsair was wearing slotmags. There was also some old Austin prewar car with no fenders/running boards parked up.

The G was as good as gold on the fast roads, but has awful embarrassing clutch judder when pulling away in 1st gear - one time it was violent enough to knock it out of gear. Another thing on the list of jobs that needs sorting...

Mark.

Just received the service history for the Saab. It's incredible! In the past two years, it's had over £2000 spent on it at a main dealer, including a new head gasket 15,000 miles ago. The original bill of sale is included, showing a total of £17585! Extras included ABS (£602), rear wiper (£330!), spot lights (£200) and £400 of stereo! Great stuff.

You sure it was a 928 as in 4.7 litre v8 and round poppy up headlamps rather than a 924 or 944? Even the scrapper 928's I've been looking at seem to go for around a grand plus this particular horror had a rare manual box.

Yes its white, I'll take a picture tomorrow if its still about.

I know its on a D because its the same age & colour as my 944.

There's a Porsche breaker just up the road who does mail order parts if you do get one.

Corsa just gone to it's new home, hoping to have Astra at the MOT station this week. Looking like an expensive month as Astra, BM, Cortina and Vespa need taxing, though at least the Cortina is free. Vespa also needs an MOT (and insurance) which I want to get sorted asap as it's ride out season about now.

A35 is running! Also we finished the welding yesterday. To celebrate I made a rather shite video.

I was going through the rather large history file wot came with my new Fiat 130 last night.

I came across several invoices from a garage in Chipping Norton totaling over 20k for work done in the early 90's.:shock:

GET IN THERE!

Double whammy on the MOT front today:

The Corsa (which I sold last night) went straight through the test for the new owner with nothing needing doing to it. Obv. I'm a bit gutted I sold it without test as I'd have doubled my money no danger, but I still got a drink out of it and the new owner is well happy.

Next up was the Astra: didn't really check round it too much, nor change the oil and filter, lob some fresh pez and injection cleaner in and thrash it first to help the emissions. Anyhow took it down, kept my fingers crossed, got the MOT done for £29.99 and it only failed on the air freshners hanging from the interior mirror (I kid you not), a sidelight bulb (cost £1.52) and three exhaust rubbers. Been quoted twenty quid for the rubbers inc. fitting so going back tomorrow for them and the (free) re-test. Happy days 8)

I need to get a 155/80/13 tire for my Escort as one of the front ones are still the original, Even though the tread is still good i can't imagine running around on a 23 year old tire being that good an idea, As the other side is also looking quite old i thought I'd replace the pair with some part worns.

I've only found one place locally so far with them in stock and they wanted £47 all in but they looked quite ropey, I've also been quoted £62 for a pair of Kumho tires fitted, The second hand one's I've seen on ebay aren't much cheaper either once I've paid postage and £10 each to be fitted. Bugger.
