THE GUBBERMINT ALWAYS KNOWS BEST

The PD engines sound like a real bag of nails, almost as bad as a Perkins Prima.

Not whisper quiet, I will grant you.

Though you must remember we've been clattering about in Ford TDDi jobbies for years, and they are mega-agricultural in sound.

A junior hacksaw blade cut in half and filed a bit would make a couple of thin radio keys. You may need to swap the permanent and switched lives on the new radio loom as to match the VW loom, the Pasatt will likely have an aerial amplifier.

Cheers, will try it later. I do have those sort of coat hanger-esque things for removing stereos but the Passat seems to have a different arrangement.

I've got away with using a couple of cable ties to get the later spec VW stereos out in the past.

I have taken a deposit on my accident-damaged 2CV, it is going to be rebuilt into a replica van by a company who builds them in Bury St Edmunds. I'm happy because I got a decent price for it, it will be put back on the road and not used for spares, and the money will be ploughed into my giffer-spec beige Maestro (which has swallowed over £400 so far, and doesn't have an MOT yet).

Excellent. That's a cool way to settle things. Remember - don't accept the first offer from your insurance company.

I dealt direct with the other insurance company and after a lot of haggling I managed a settlement of £1700 - and I got to keep the car. They never even sent an assessor round, so I think the price was very reasonable for a car that would have needed a new chassis for the next MOT (October). The guy who has bought it showed me some pictures of the work he has done and the jobs really are first-class, and he is going to send me some pictures once it is completely restored and turned into a van. I decided in the end the only way the car would return to the road realistically would be with a van conversion, as it is an extremely rusty and badly damaged example of a standard eighties Dolly.

Anyway I'm happy, and I haven't ruled out another 2CV in the future... ;)

I made a rare visit to my once-nice Mazda 121 today.

When I last used it a few months ago, it needed a new radiator and the clutch was on its way out. Now the brakes are stuck on and the battery's proplerly dead - nothing at all even when attempting to jump start it.

I know how you feel mate, I've got 3 cars in various rented garages. My mk2 Sterlings been stuck in a my one garage since early last year. I took it out regularly and drove it around the yard but then a few months back a small knocking/tapping noise started coming form the cambelt/power steering pump area. I cant pinpoint it so decided to leave it as is until I can rustle up some money to get cambelt/waterpump changed and hopefully back on the road.

My other G-reg Sterling has been garaged since October 2008. Only seen it a handful of times. Hopfully something will be done about it soon as I'm fed up of the clowncil getting arsey with payment demands.

I unleashed some enthusiasm while the rest of the world was watching the football and introduced the Capri front springs to a grinder. I now sits absolutely prefectly, and has no spring dislocation issues at all :)

Looking great Mike. :D Personally I'd go for slightly taller/more period looking rubber but its not my car

100% agree, and well done with using your time instead of wasting it on that thing "football"

Taller rubber would bring interference headaches, and these tyres are new and i already had them fitted, i reckon a 55 profile over the 50 wuuld look aesthetically better, but i didn't really want to buy any more! :)

Fair enough! I know what you mean about taller rubber being a pain for clearance as I would have preferred more than 65 profiles on the Hillman.

The cool thing about your wheels though is that I'm guessing they've not really cost any more than another set of superlights/deep RS 4 spokes etc.

Never really liked Capris ------------------ untill I saw this one , Big win on those wheels

Took the 635 for the MOT today.

Fitted four tyres to it on the way down, and gave it a bit of general fettlage, basic stuff, unblocked the washers, changed a brake light bulb, but that was about it.

It didn't do too badly at all.

Failed on;

Offside steering drag link ball joint is buggered (£63 from ECP)

Centre exhaust isn't properly supported. (The bracket that bolts to the body has snapped)

Failed it on the three wheelarches being a bit grotty. (I suspect he was being a smartarse.)

Advised on;

Needs welding to the two front floors (easy repair),

Front bumper insecure (I've already fixed that with tie-straps)

N/S/R inner wing a bit crusty (which you'd do when sorting the outer)

O/S/R is a bit crusty near the trailing arm mount, but it'd clean up.

It needs the n/s/r top mount replacing, but he didn't mention that for some reason. It rattles, annoyingly.

Not bad at all, methinks.

Fitted a Clutch Slave Cylinder on my mates old Corolla, not so much fun after a 14 hour day in the office, but then it did all go to plan apart from not having any brake fluid, and all the garages near me not stocking it. They're fine if you want bread, milk & a novelty torch. But rubbish for anything car related..

CD player fitted to the Pisshat, happily twatting round at loads of MPG listening to Dizzy Rascal.

I'm just refitting the trim and bumpers at the mo, i'm well chuffed. Good Polish tomorrow and clean should see it spanking, it matches the bonnet better than the pics suggest as it's mega dusty at present :)

Lovely! Always nice to see a Capri with bumpers.

That looks the absolute bees knees man.

I reckon you should use fablon cut at an angle to make a sort of bad boy bonnet, and put a whale tail on it and 'motorsport' sunstrip for that sort of 'non-commital council estate mid life crisis' look that looks so good on these and which is still seen from time to time.

The capper's looking good there, I like it.

Thanks folks, it makes it all worth it when it gets a nice reaction :)

Oh, and fear not, it will be getting some proper number plates! I just need to find somewhere that does the old style font, any suggestions?

Don't know if this is any good, I got it from the bloke who makes the number plates in the trailer at Beaulieu autojumble.

I have a name of a company somewhere, I will dig it out of my email....

I've tried a few times and always drawn a blank. I've even had a dealer insist that pre-2001 plates don't exist..
