I shall be scouring gumtree for some winter wheels and tyres over the next couple of weeks. Where I live now, chunky winter tyres are almost a necessity.

I should elaborate.

On Thursday the Clio decided it couldn't tell whether it was locked or unlocked. Thus, it started putting the hazards on. At random. While driving at speed.

The only way to switch them off is to shut the car down completely.

They would come back on again within about 30 seconds sometimes. I don't have time for this kind of bullshit.

My solution to this can be seen above.

I don't mind these. How are you finding it so far?

The 1.6 TWINPORT picks up nicely at 3k.

Good clutch, goes and stops arrow straight. Went round the AWPR at 70* perfectly. Obviously not as fast as the Clio was, but not slow.

Zero drama, cheaper road tax, quieter.

It's what I need right now. If it lasts until the MOT in May I'll be happy.

You're definitely doing it right. You got rid of a french car to a man that won a car from a man that replaced that car with a french car.

Hope it sees you well through the winter man.

Your trademark huge rubber floor mats are still in it too.

Bonus! Saves me buying some myself.

Winterised.

60+ miles of flat out driving around the muddy back roads of Aberdeenshire and the fuel gauge is only just starting to think about moving. Not bad.

EML is permanently on, but was informed about it and provided with an OBD tool to clear it for the MOT. In May! It can wait until then. For now I treat it as a light that tells me there is indeed an engine somewhere nearby.

Looks like you've hung a prosthetic dong from your rear view mirror. Of course, that's what all Astra owners did back in the early days

It's an oddly coloured Jelly Belly air freshener.

However your explanation is better so we'll go with that.

We did some Land Rover stuff today.

Loosely tried the tub and doors on it.

We also drove it.

With no bodywork. In late November.

I've just been washing mud out from my teeth with a cup of tea.

Oh, I know! I've driven series Landys before and their seats are shite! That wooden chair is almost comfy...

I should probably do something with this at some point.

Lower it, drill holes in the bumper, big sticker across the window that says "Because BMW" then abandon it under a tree. In 6 years, list it for sale for £4200 as needing "light recommisioning"

I've now ordered some stuff.

- low profile trolley jack

- extra axle stands

- vaccuum oil extractor thingy

The first two are so I can get the BMW up in the air for the winter while I chip away at the to-do list.

The oil extractor is just a nice thing to have.

Aye they oil extractors are class. I had to get a smaller pipe for mine as it wouldn't fit some of our motors.

Aye.

I used the brothers touring's one a fair few times. I've ordered a 6L one.

Ordered it all from a certain hardware chain store a friend works at, so got the 20% staff discount on all it. A significant chunk saved!

Replacing brake calipers on Vauxhall Astras!

All the cool* kids* are doing it.

Mr Tickman did the front left in his brief tenure, but the front right started binding a wee bit. For the very modest price of a caliper for one of these I just did it instead of messing around.

The brake pedal has actual travel and progression now, instead of just going thunk.

Not a lot happening yet, but I got the BMW indoors.

I'm trying to make this space BMW-sized with room to work on it.

IMG_20231223_134748.thumb.jpg.8afa7ed8ea27183b923c450b3f93d23d.jpg

It really is a smol car. Even compared to when I stored the Astra in here, it looks noticeably more compact.

It's unreal just how much utter junk is in that shed, and I've been chipping away at it since October!

A bit more progress (throwing stuff in the bin) today.

When we aren't under a yellow weather warning, I shall drag everything outside (possibly including the Land Rover) and reshuffle things. Ideally I want the BMW where the tractor is right now.

I really am rubbish at doing things in a timely manner but I also don't care about getting it back on the road before spring anyway.

All I need to do is replace the front struts and rebuild the driver's side handbrake. The gear linkage bushings aren't an MOT requirement but would be nice. All in, a lazy weekend worth of work really.

It can hibernate in comfort for now though.

Smol tractor plus smol BMW equals space.

IMG_20231231_123723.thumb.jpg.3d2636ee87f2c49cefe1437fe231305a.jpg

I have the same space down the drivers side.

Suffice to say; I'm ready to actually wield some spanners menacingly towards the BMW in the new year.

The to do list:

- replace both front struts

- rebuild handbrake mechanism on the driver's side (and maybe the passenger side as a precaution)

- replace gear linkage bushings

- investigate intermittently sticky drivers door handle

- continue reassembling the Land Rover in the rear of shot

I know it's a fairly tame list (on the BMW anyway) but I'm not as much of a spanner weilding hero as many on here, and my head has been wandering around elsewhere for the past several months. Anyway, I don't intend to drive it in the road salt so it'll likely end up sitting around ready and waiting for a wee bit. Heck, I even have all the required parts stored in the boot ready to go. I can confidently say the brakes seem to be healthy, as I left it in neutral and I can shove it forwards and backwards several feet in that space without any effort.

I may spend some time with a wire brush and some paint before fitting new parts.
