Funnily a car I looked at last weekend had a similar amount of dirt and grit in the boot (despite a £5k "recommisionisn) and leaves and twigs in the A post base. Possibly whoever did it trained at the same school of bondo and bodgery

Started a little clean-up.

Most welds are of this calibre.

 

What's more worrying is that this is a semi-stressed panel and that's a partially structural weld.

Took the rest of the nonsense panels out. Rusty but better.

I started knocking at the welds to clean them up.

Quite a lot came away like this.

I had a review of how the back end of the car is assembled. That seam is exterior, so I started taking out spot welds. Under that is the rear lower panel behind the bumper. 

I'm going to cut along the top of that and join the new repair panel in there.

In cross section, the rear of the trunk is like this. The red is the back panel below the boot lid, green the panel behind the bumper, yellow the boot floor.

When it was made, the green panel was spot welded to the yellow, then the red was spot welded to the back lip of the yellow.

I'm cutting the yellow at the purple arrow on top of the green panel, meaning I can let the repair in on a strong point.

 

That needs to wait because I've run out of cutting discs again.

Truth. But it's bold. I think I'd prefer a purple with a bit more blue in it, but that picture the paint was still wet and it does appear to dry darker. I'll take a photo when it's light and we'll see just how magenta it is, compared to purple.

Nope, that colour is perfect.

I'm biased though, as purple is my favourite colour.

Those welds are pretty shocking, but at least the metal must be fairly thick for it to just sit on top like that...

Purple cars are the best.  Mine sports both Ford Aubergine and what I suspect is BL Aconite.

You should definitely go for the full Plum Crazy Phil, if not fully correct it's definitely a 'period modification' colour you could imagine someone getting done when the car was 10 years old in the 70s.

I went look and they have another, more purply-purple in their repertoire. There was none on the shelf, so I may go elsewhere and look. They were the only place open last night.

It's darkened up a little, but my camera utterly destroys the color.

That there is pretty much the color I put on. I've seen the camera on my phone saturate with other purples, making them look very pink.

I'm looking at a more Cadbury purple too.

Looking at the car against that as a comparison, it makes the original mauve appear almost gold.

There was quite a lot of car on the floor. So, I went out to sweep up.

I stood for a while, making cogitating noises while staring at the car.

That's a much better representation of the color now it's not just under the fluorescent lights in the garage. 

I think it needs to be a darker purple. I'm not sold on that now I've seen it in the sun.

I sure as hell am!  I know it's your car and all that, but I would absolutely be buying every can of the purple you've shown us, it'll fit the Fury like a Savile Row suit!

I might be inclined to paint the roof silver in contrast...

Not do the roof white or black ?

And have hints of that other colour (I.e whitewalls if you go with a white roof) , and spray the side trim to match roof - As I'm not a fan of chrome.

Iteration #2.

Inside. Typically it reacted where I was too lazy to wipe it down and got greasy handprints on.

Outside shows the color much better. A proper purple (close to a color they had listed as Casino Royale).

This and an off-white roof.

Some CAD this afternoon.

There's just enough metal left in the back to be able to press thin cardboard into the grooves and make a record of their location.

That then cut out so it can be transferred to metal with a sharpie.

I had a go at making a die and dolly and manually bashing a bead into the same steel I plan on using.

Hard work and hard to make tidy. Tempted to buy a bead roller, because I need to make a couple of these.

Got a blue car already. Each time I look at the car I like the dark purple.

Wife wants bright red. They do look good in red.
