I was being grumpy ...... in a tongue in cheek sort of way! ;)I happen to agree, although I do believe that everyone should go to a quiet carpark in the snow and play, it's a great way to waste half an hour, without ruining your car or tyres. Then perhaps we'd have more people who can drive in the snow and get to work.To add to this thread - people who try to drive like Nigel Mansell in the snow on summer tyres!

I wasn't sure - the 'chill' bit threw me!I learnt to drive in the snow at the British Car Auctions car park, Blackbushe 1988.....good times.

Kind of missing the point though, it wasn't about whether you can or can't get to work, it was whether you should.

if it is safe to do so, I see no reason why you shouldn't go to work! If it is dangerous to do so, then you shouldn't.Let's face it though, the issue is not the getting to work, but the inability of many to be able to drive when there is the slightest hint of bad weather! The snow is not the issue here, it is the woefully under-skilled and under-equipped driver that is!A bit like the stupid gits who climb mountains in winter and wonder why the rest of us get angry when they call out mountain rescue!

My pay is so pathetic im wondering wether to bother going to work , head over a barrel situation , no pay rise for the next year at least , no more sick pay , no more flexi time , no more radio , 6 days less holiday and I have to save three days for christmas , ALL THIS FOR LESS THAN £6 AN HOUR doing a skilled job ,

It makes me grumpy when people come out with the "The Swedes take this in their stride, we don't know we're born" spiel, which is fine except that anybody who's passed his test in the last 10 years won't have had the chance to drive in really bad weather. Maybe that's why there aren't many West Indian rally drivers?

Plus the fact they nearly all fit 'winter' tyres or snow chains etc to their cars. Most people would manage with a tank tracks on their cars.

Sounds depressingly familiar.

Some gobshite I used to work with got out of his hospital bed to come to work.If I'd been his boss I'd have given the wanker a written warning.

Likewise, a good mate of mine. Known each other from we were nippers. Daz was a big lad (a brickie) with a great sense of humour, and everyone liked him. Drank like a fish and smoked like a train. He started off on blow, graduated to E's. I found the poor bastard dead in his flat. Even before the ambulance crew arrived I knew from his eyes that he had suffocated.I like the Chinese approach to drug dealers - execution.RIP Daz 1981-2009

I hate drugs in general. Every single person I know that has done drugs has some kind of mental problem (of which most will deny).A load of them need to be high every day to survive, my mate's been stoned everyday since he was 14.LOL

On one of the forums I frequent there are a bunch of know-nothing gobshites cursing people who can't drive a certain type of RWD in the snow (BMWs, obviously). Fair enough, thinks I, until I get to the post of some fuckin' cardigan wearing IAM knob jockey who's posted a whole load of tripe about how ABS and traction control are no good on ice, and how an experienced driver can easily stop a non-ABS equipped car on ice in much shorter distances than it's possible to stop an ABS equipped one.Bollocks!, says I. ABS can apply and release the brakes about 50 times a second. I'd love to see some halfwitted IAM manage that.I also pointed out that if you're not a lead footed buffoon, traction control will actually help, and that the whole bloody idea of driving on ice is to AVOID wheelspin...Arrgh. I hate armchair motorists sometimes.

Heh, I very much doubt this to be the case. I know a load of potheads who have no mental issues whatsoever and who've been smokin' the herbs for many, many years.Heavy drinkers, on the other hand.... they're not to be trusted!

I think he's getting himself a bit mixed up. From low speeds in fresh snow a non-ABS equipped car will stop more quickly as the locked wheels will make the snow pile up in front of them which will help to stop the car. At higher speeds the advantage is lost as you're likely to go into a spin or into the ditch rather than anything else. On ice there's very little difference in stopping distances, but with ABS you're more likely to manage to maintain some semblance of directional control over the car rather than ploughing into the nearest kerb. And yes, I do speak from experience on all counts. As to BMWs in the snow, anyone who can genuinely drive a modern Beemer at speed in icy conditions with the traction control switched off has my respect - I know I couldn't. I've had some fun in RWD cars on icy roads, but they have tended to be of the Hillman Hunter / Vauxhall Viva variety rather than some overpowered penis extension on unnecessarily wide runflats.

Well my own experience of all this snow make me think traction control is a waste of time when you really need it. My bluey was just about able to scrabble up into works carpark but the mk5 golf I tried a little while later had no chance. TC kept cutting the power and would even spin the wheels with my foot off the accelerator. Plus it was damn near impossible to move any big german barge with auto gearbox. They would just spin their wheels, going nowhere...

I won't be going anywhere quickly in mine without the traction stuff turned on. Bugger that for a game of soldiers. It's there, it helps, it's staying on (unless I find a big car park with nothing to hit...)

My old Manta Coupe was awesome on the icy A-roads, heading home from the local meets late at night. Silvia was crap just about all the time but s/trailing arms and shagged bushes will do that...

Ice. What handbrakes were made for! I have been parking my car like Russ Swift for the last week, shame its all melted round here now.Although to be honest I was getting a bit bloody sick of the snow and ice as it gave my train company more excuses than usual. I still fail to see how "Owing to the icy conditions, the 7.59 will consist of 4 carriages instead of the usual 8". Any ideas why that would be?

My neighbour has a MK5 Golf too and all the TC succeeds in doing is stopping it going anywhere in the snow.

My Transit has traction control, but it's control in the sense of not letting you have any. If you are approaching anywhere that traction might be an issue you have to remember to turn it off before it gets you stuck.I'll tell you where ABS is fuck all use, when you're on a narrow B road going a little faster than you should be and you find yourself having to lose quite a bit of speed at the same time as moving over to the verge. As soon as a wheel touches the mud you might as well have no brakes at all. Without ABS you would at least have two wheels braking

Probably they couldn't find a driver who was arsed enough to get out and couple something up.

Or the cleaners couldn't make it to collect all the beer cans, fag ends, heroin needles and blood that morning!

I find that normally in cars with TC, the light will flash to tell me I'm being a heavy footed clod. If I continue to be a heavy footed clod it starts applying brakes to try and get traction. This will lead to the scenario of the TC trying to brake as I try to accelerate until eventually nothing happens other than the car will eventually crawl to a protesting halt. If, however, I slightly ease off the gas when the light flashes (and the light will only flash if I'm asking for traction that isn't there), traction is resumed and I continue on my merry way. Now, to some, this means that the TC isn't needed, but I've noticed that the light flashes before wheelspin is glaringly obvious, so if I work with the TC as described I'm getting traction. If the TC was switched off, or indeed not fitted, the chances of getting stuck are higher. Also, the number of non-ABS equipped cars I've seen sliding out of side roads with the front wheels locked lately has been rather high. The cars with ABS on the same surface stop a lot earlier. It's been fun to watch. Puntos seem to be very prone to locking up the fronts.

Drug dealers and smackheads. Scum of the earth. I can feel a tiny, tiny bit of sympathy for some users but the wankers who sell that shit should be locked away for life and never see the light of day ever again.

NIMROD

It works too.

That looks good thanks, but my gripe was meant to be more about the effects these scum cause to families, especially children.
It sounds like your having some problems with one of these Death Dealing Knobjockey's.

Best to just phone the old bill, i'm sure they'd love any information that would lead to some little shit doing time.:twisted:

Unfortunately it's a bit more complicated than that, very long story.

Bit cryptic sorry but involves family, or the out-laws to be exact. Two (now possibly three) got hooked and I've seen first hand how it destroys lots of people's lives.

Yes it does, not just the addicts, but the knock on effect is quite profound - I have to say though my opinion on how it should be tackled has changed markedly over the years.

That McDonalds advert......Since when has £1 been known as 'One Bob'????Surely 'One Bob' is 5 pence, thus a 2 Bob bit is 10p and thus a 10 bob bit is a fifty pence piece....... £1 is 'twenty bob'. Fucktards.

My wife is glad that she's not the only one! She didn't use the word Fucktards though...
My wife said "arseholes" and "tosspots"
