Hey Negative creep how flexible are you to travel? I work in Slough (pointless into: but live in Essex) and my shift partner lives in Plymouth; he travels up on the sleeper train/125 as required - worth investigating work in The Thames Valley corridor/London?

See if any of these are any good? Are you in that industry still indirectly, half a brain and you should scythe through the ranks sharpish, not forgetting free travel to work (unlike us at Network Rail since1997).

Edit: that link might be cranky, google first group careers, stuff all over the country but the registration/C.V. Upload is a time limited once only upload so bear it in mind.

To be honest I'm not bothered about owning a house, and since I'll never afford it it's not something I've ever even considered. I feel the fact I can't afford a better rented place is less to do with people buying council houses and more to do with me not being able to find a decent job or partner like everyone else my age did years ago

This is as maybe, but some of the affordability is also due the encouragement to buy-to-let, too - and a profit has to be returned on those properties owned by private landlords when they sell it, one way of trying to ensure this is to maintain high rents.

The thing to remember is things don't always fall on you, some you have to chase after like a horny dog with some legs to hump, take more chances, ask that bird out, what's the worst that can happen? If she says no, well when you go to bed you aren't going out with her, that's the same as when you got up, so the net result is the same, just get on with it Al! :)

You aren't as old as you think you are, give yourself some small goals, give yourself them to work towards and it'll help, trust me.

I'm only in the position I'm in because I jumped on a shared ownership house, sure I had to put up with paying the "worthless cunts, waterloo housing group, demontford" (Hope google trawls that) a whole shitload of rent for fuck all, but in the end I sacked them off and have a house that is worth a reasonable chunk more than I got into it for 6 years ago, up north is definitely cheaper, and at least you aren't a million miles from everything like you are down there.

Didn't pass RAF interview, no reason given. Got no heating, no emergency credit, no money.. but on a positive note I did fix the draft coming into my bedroom through one of them old summer vent things with some super glue and silicone sealant. I'll be spending most of the week in bed with my coat on keeping warm. Brrr.

It will get better when I can think clearly.

Probs. Oh yeah and I've lost 2 garages so now my spare room that I have to pay for out of my £75 a week is full of that stuff. Something about council tax

..and yeah that's it really.

I think a job in Tesco will be my greatest lifetime achievement.

Hey all lighten up, I left school 22 years ago at 16 and I have a handful of city and guilds. I do unsociable shifts 65 miles from home, but I earn a fair wage. I just tip toed through various Jobs, earning a little more each time till I found a good one!

If you fancy it, things are achievable, if not immediately. Think positive 8)

Try a PTS course (personal track safety) where the provider will (importantly) "sponsor" your ticket and ergo employ you after. These firms obviously charge a fortune compared to those that don't offer ongoing employment. You will start off doing heavy donkey work at minimum wage during darkness in the rain, stick with it within a year you will have sussed the system and be on your way to a fair wage. You can work wherever you want too.

I don't know these guys from Adam, but this is the kind outfit you want (possibly, god knows if there legit or what not).

I think there's a bunch of us - myself included - in a shitty boat right now. I've got my get out plan, but it hinges on getting some work in first... any work! The last time I was in this position I considered some pretty questionable careers, and I have to admit I've been considering them again, but the short term gain would outweigh the long term grief, I think, so I'm holding on for something rather more conventional.

Certainly there seems to be more opportunities up North, and there does seem to be a steady increase of jobs in the warehouse and call centre markets. Combined with lower average rent and other living costs it could work out rather well. Only problem is that the North can be a bit grim, I know this having lived up North for much of my life, but it's still not as grim as living with friends on a housing estate in New Addington, Croydon, where there would be a weekly car fire in the car park...

No pep talks from me though, it's all a bit shitty right now for a lot of people, the best we can hope for is people to lean on and a warm blanket to save on the utility bills.

You should ask for feedback. At best you will get a useful tip or two for the next interview, at worst it'll make them feel a tad guilty about inviting you over as a fall guy in order to justify hiring their mate who'd been supplied with the 'right' answers in advance.

Best to wait for the tycoon positions rather than the minimum wage menial jobs I say  And yes I have, a £ is a £.

Lord Sterlings, tis shite but better than NOWT approach should be applauded, sign on with an agency take whatever comes in.

I have thanked them for their letter and asked for feedback, also asked whether it would be worth me applying for a different trade/ what I could do to improve and when I can apply again.

But...

I don't think much will come of it if I'm honest.

Hmm.. I'm been misunderstood. I'm not a wage snob, nor a career snob, I've done work in Go Outdoor's call centre, one of the many Sports Direct warehouses, and even a short stint on the bin wagons. The work I refer to rather cryptically is male escort, an 'opportunity' I've been offered when in a similar position in the past. That's the job route I don't wish to pursue, I'm holding out for something like an audio typist, shop floor staff or warehouse operative type job instead.

Sorry, I apologise, but hey why not? Unless its the rough and tough clientele whose wives don't know.

no need to apologise, this is the internet, I should've been more clear. The money is generally good, but can be infrequent, and personal expenses can be quite high, particularly travel, uniform and personal grooming. There's too much financial risk compared to, say, a regular office drone job, and then there's the old unspoken rule that some agencies insist you follow if you want any chance of repeat customers. Not all escort agencies are prostitution badly disguised, but quite a few do seem to be. Might be exciting for a week or two, but it'd soon wear thin as a job I think. But hey, never let it be said that I've been work shy :D

This lack of money/housing/jobs (or stuck in shit ones) does seem to be a theme with 'shiters. I'm 22, single, stuck in a shit job with no prospects and still living at home. In addition to which I have four ageing cars to support, two of which are major projects. Never had much luck with girls because I'm shy, and had a bad experience a few years ago which dented my confidence somewhat!

Having said that, all being well I'm heading back to education in September to complete a degree course so at least that'll give me some independence, and hopefully I'll get something out of it at the end. If not then I'll be back to square one, and I can really see NC's situation being me in a few years time.

Thanks for the advice Luxobarges, but I don't fancy living North of Watford one bit. Housing is stupidly expensive round here though.

If only it were that simple. Many moons ago, I lost out on a near-certain opportunity (they wanted to hire someone there and then) to get a fantastic job because I was doing 'whatever came in' (which actually happened to be a pretty nice and easy data entry-type temp assignment), only had my lunchtime to communicate with the agent who was recruiting for that job, and no e-mail (no internet on the mobile back then), and I ended up going for my interview in the wrong town (Station Road Coalville instead of Coleshill!). I haven't really bothered temping ever since and today I'm out of work (apart from some random freelance and associated stuff) and often have weeks with 2 or even 3 interviews, most of which are a bit of a drive away and effectively wipe out the entire day.

I am unsuccessful at interviews, until I succeed, at which point I will have likely landed a permanent, well-paid and interesting job. If I choose to do some minimum-wage office work as an agency temp, there is no possibility of that happening. Game theory and all that.
