Volvo 940 Torslanda - dampness investigations etc

It’s a 940, owned by a mate of mine. Been a good car for him, it’s a late example in a good colour, relatively low mileage and nice spec (torslanda, LPT, 7 seats) but by his admission has been treated quite badly, Spanish dirt roads, regularly fully loaded with shit, bags of sand and cement (he’s a plasterer), you know the sort of thing. In terms of maintenance he’s regularly checked the oil.

Previous to his ownership it had an easy life, and was well maintained. MOT history is good.

If I’m buying I’m buying unseen. He’s in London, I’m in Devon. I might get it Shiply’d or I might store it somewhere and pick it up later. It’s cheap. £300.

Obviously anyone on here is going to tell me to buy it, but is it going to be horrible? How do they take to being used as builders’ vans?

Get it bought! You can’t lose at £300

Seriously, they are amazing cars, high mileage is no issue and you won’t find a better made car. The 940 is seen by many as the best volvo estate ever.

my 240 had lived on a farm going by all the mud and straw in it before I cleaned it up ..

it then did another 10 years with me and lived on to its expected 20 year life before rust and age got the better of it ....

I would have had a 740 or 940 if I needed one ...

Buy it. They are very tough cars and can take serious abuse before expiring, but even if it is a bit worn they’re dead easy to work on. The 940 is the ultimate version in the traditional rear drive style cars.

By the time you’ve cleaned it and fixed the inevitably shagged suspension you’ll be as well buying a decent one

Ha.

I’ll enjoy the cleaning, at least.

Didn’t manage to get in touch with him today but I reckon I’ll have it. Have some pics. His dog in the pic too, it’s gonna smell bad...

For the price its not going to be perfect - its as cheap as chips. A good valet or some elbow grease from yourself may get surprising results.

Spend a couple of days cleaning it all out (what else have you got to do at the moment anyway?) and it should be fit for a few years yet. It looks worth every penny of £300, they're worth that in parts nowadays.  The alloys would fetch £100 easy.

Just had a chat with him, the deal has been done, trying to work out how to get it moved...

...he’s semi up for dropping it off... I wonder...

I would be getting that plate off onto retention straight away in case you forget later.

I don’t even know what that means.

Ah okay, just that I regularly see a Ovlov estate round this way being used by a builder/decorator.

If you can get it to my gaff, will happily give it a wipe over ;)

Thanks, but I’m looking forward to cleaning it myself...
