Chrysler's "Big Block" engines started at 383 cubic inches for most of their production run.  383 = 6.3 litres, which is quite big enough for most purposes, but we're dealing with Detroit here so they kept offering bigger displacements.  As indeed they did with the "Small Blocks" which got up as far as 360/5.9.

It depends on how far back in history you want to go, there was a time when Chrysler Corp offered a 305 CI Big Block.

However, in case of the 1969 Plymouth, we are talking B-Series Big Block, aka 'Wedge', which was introduced in 1958 to replace the first generation Hemis.

The B-Series started at a relatively modest (in an American sense) 350 CI.

They were followed in 1959 with the RB-Series, "Raised" B, because they had a higher deck surface to allow for a longer stroke than the initial B-Series.

These engines remained in production until 1979, with the following displacements introduced over the years:

 

B-Series:

 

1958: 350 and 361. The latter remained in production until the very end of the series, although only for trucks.

1959: 383. This is a bored out version of the 361 and not to be confused with the RB 383. This is the engine in said 1969 Plymouth.

1972: 400. This replaced the 383 B.

 

RB Series:

 

1959: 383. This engine was only available in 1959 and 1960. It is not to be confused with the 383 B-Series.

1959: 413.

1963: 426 (Wedge). This was Chrysler's highest performance V8 until the introduction of the second generation 426 Hemi later that year for race use only. 1964 and 1965 the 426 Wedge engine was only available in Dodges and Plymouths.

1966: 440. This engine remained in production until the very end of Big Block production in 1979.

 

The discerning Mopar nutters get a moist crotch over the 400 B-Series engines. They can be stroked by fitting a 440 RB or aftermarket crankshaft to increase the stroke, which yields 451 CI with the arguably lighter and stiffer non-raised block. There are totally unconfirmed* rumours* that a certain Junkman once built one of these for his Stockcar F1.

 

Stating that production of these engines ended in 1979 is a bit misleading though. Correct is that they weren't available in new Chrysler vehicles since then.

However, all components to build a brand new engine, as well as new complete crate engines, are still available via the Mopar Performance programme.

Nice looking old bus this, T & T'd as well. I really like the wheels on these, I think they are one of the best suited to a car eva..

There's a chap at work who has a G reg silver 240 GLT saloon, i was following it home the other night and it dawned on me what a good looking car it is now, it has the alloys and contrasting black leather and just looked like a right nice place to be.

Most convertibles in my book are only suitable for flat cocks (girlies) but this seems to be one of the few I would happily smoke around in for the summer.

They ARE grim, professionally so.  Free is too high a price.  I can't begin to understand anyone paying actual money for one.

^Nice Classic rangie with a lovely interior, always wanted one of these but am put off by rot and those grotty EFi set ups on them.
