I used to own this. I bought it in the dark with a boot full of wheels and didn't notice the self levelling suspension was fucked. Then the PAS pump seized. The A/C was flashing the error light. Then the buyer noticed (I genuinely hadn't) that the inner wings had rust holes the size of footballs. 

I wonder what it would have been like if I'd persisted with it?

That is what you call FUCKED.  

Bloke I worked with was part of a team that drove 2 new one across Africa in the late 1980s. They were lent to them by the UK LADA distributor.  

The one with full roll cage and strengthening had some cracking of the monocoque. The completely standard one: they had to bodge the chassis rails with timber to hold the engine in place. 

The distributor had hoped it would be a great marketing opportunity to show how resilient they were. Instead they were pushed into a crusher, and never mentioned again.

Obviously it'd be better if it was the basic 1.6 on steels, but at least it's a prefacelift. Everything exempt next year, too, so no tape on the headlamps for an MoT nonsense to worry about to get it registered.
