How did they manage to wring 190 horses from a 1,8l? Are they turbo?

No they aren't they have variable valve timing and that's about it.

This is about 10 miles from me.  I really don't need another broken CX in my life though...

Whenever I drive northbound on the A140 in that area I have noticed a field of broken cars. I always want to pull over and take a look but there is nowhere safe to park.

It's like someone thought " hey let's spec the worst combination of trim and function.and give it to our staff as a pool car."

It was briefly the most powerful engine to size (beaten by the Honda S2000, if I recall) but anecodtal evidence on the Celica forums suggests Toyota were optimistic with the 190 claim. People generally turbo or supercharge them but I recall one geezer spending a load of money on NA tuning (proper tuning, not just the usual mcdonalds' carpark stuff) and when he put it on a rolling road it made 190 hp lol!

I think they're not bad cars - but I don't like the leather interiors and it's s shame about the oil burning of the 130 1.8.

It goes mental above 6k rpm.

Dome has one of those engines in an mr2. When it hits 6k it sounds (and goes) like a different car.

Yes, the second half at Wembley wasn't as good as the first.

You're right about those Mercedes coupes too, Martin. They hovered round banger money territory for what seemed like years (most Mercs seem to do that) then started climbing exponentially.

Indeed. I remember eyeing up an immaculate blue one at Chumley in 2016 that had a note in the window saying £3200 or something, and that seemed quite salty.

Sadly, it’s up for £9,700 or best offer.  My idea of the going rate would be half that (which I still can’t afford at the moment) but maybe these are another ship that’s now sailed.

Possibly not, when I bought mine about a year ago the seller wanted more than that but couldn't get it and settled with me for a big chunk less than that.  Private cars seem to go for fraction of classic  dealer ones which are advertised at anything up to £30k. I find it difficult to see how some are 5 times as good as mine.
