Recommended mobile mechanic

My friendly Mobile mechanic is very busy at the moment and I'm in dire need of my clutch sorting. A1 clutches in Derby have quoted 250 quid to supply and fit but it's a bit too much of a stretch. Any recommendations please?

I know but I'm limited on what I can spend especially with wife being off work too.

A mobile mechanic is going to change at least £40 an hour and he’ll add a bit in for the inconvenience of doing it in this weather. Assuming he’ll want the job full stop. Kerb side clutch swaps aren’t a lot of fun.

Exactly that mally. And sierraman,I can see your point exactly. I didnt want to work in this weather when I was able to. Just beginning to take the piss now. Since November this is the third car. Can't apply for notability yet either as I've less than 12 months on my papers and awaiting review. It's that time again for anyone on disability will understand!

Let's say the clutch costs £80.

Mobile mechanic will have to buy the clutch, collect it, bring it to you along with his tools, then fit it whilst probably lying on his back outside in close to freezing conditions.

It's enough work swapping clutches in a warmish workshop with a ramp, gearbox stands etc.. lying in the road makes it much harder.

If mobile mechanic does the job in under four hours he's made <£50/hour, especially once you subtract his time getting to you and getting back home.

Take it to the garage which quoted £250. Pay them.

It'll just stay off the road for a while. It's not just as easy as paying £250 quid just like that for me.

How bad is it slipping? Driving carefully on it should eek out another 500-1k if it's just started slipping. Gotta be very light footed and plan ahead with minimal changes.

Did that on my Spaceship Civic and drove to Kent and back (~600 miles) with it still working fine after.

This is Bub, he can kill a brand new car in 3 months!

If I knew someone who wanted a clutch fitting in the current weather I'd be booked up for the next 10 weeks or so to!

I totally understand in this weather. I really do. It's slipping when accelerating and slips more under load on boost. 2.0 hdi 90

Isn't a 2.0 HDI 90 blessed with a DMF?

Not at £250!

Bloody hell, Bub. Never rains eh? £250 is cheap for a full clutch kit fitted up; even cashola. I’d try and nurse it along and see if you can just keep ticking until you can scrape some money together.

I’m sorry - I don’t know your situation. But are you at the point where, actually, public transport is more sensible?

Can't walk far due to disabilities, public transport isn't ideal for visiting family and mobility scooter. Wife still ill so trying to muddle along. Can't drive her car too much though as it causes pain and discomfort. I'm just gonna say fuck it soon. Take care off the road and become a hermit.

Sympathy for your predicament.

If £250 is too much for clutch replacement how much are you hoping to get it done for?

Just out of interest.

If it is slipping on boost you can get away with being gentle on it.

On boost uphill is worse but it is slipping on pull off too. It's generally not very well. Clutch has been high all time I've had it and it slipped on boost then I had the clutch bled which helped a bit

I honestly do not know. At this stage I'm just going to say fuck it and it's coming off the road.

Disconnect the turbo. Seriously though, I'll put some money in the coffers if someone starts a pot.

Once the clutch is replaced how long before the timing belt snaps or some other disaster occurs?

Sorry Bub, I don't mean any ill intentions but how many cars have you been through since you handed the Motability car back?

If crowdfunding occurs it should go towards a car that's going to last you a while.

The timing belt was done 4 years ago but again it's all hearsay which I'm starting to think maybe previous owner was ripped off by his garage. Or he just rested his foot on the pedal. Who knows?
