Well Skizz, two things. I’m worried about all the prejudice and intolerance in the world. My friend Shona, who’s a Secretary Bird even though that name has connotations of sexist stereotypes, is getting trolled on Insta because of her ‘funny walk’ and people are saying she deserves to be eaten by a Harpy Eagle. That’s like, really wrong.

That must be very difficult for you and Shona, Ryan. What’s the second thing that’s troubling you?

First time this wee beastie has been out of Lincolnshire i think, it has led a sheltered life.  And deffo the furthest its been driven in one go in years, so i doff my cap. May it convey you in a suitably gallic fashion.

Good to meet you man, pleased it didnt expire on the A1.

If you're going to leave Lincolnshire, you might as well leave it properly. 

It was great dancing between the wagons on the big road. It's an unusually decent 5th gear cruiser given its a 32 year old hatchback.

My first 205 had a cheap aftermarket knob that would rotate as you changed gear. Not irritating at all. 

Nice buy! I love the blue tinted dash. Dashboards don't have enough colour these days.

Are cracked knobs a common problem?

 

Very common. So common in fact that a replica market emerged as they've been nla for a long time. You can get the replica replacements on eBay now at a reasonable rate but the fits not the best. I dunno why Peugeot didn't just fucking thread the lever like normal car companies.

It's been a while since I pulled a knob, but I THINK there's protruding sections from the shaft with vertical splines on to aid the idiotic push fit system. So not simply. Though I may be mis-remembering.

You remember correctly. The top of the shaft is like a cross shape and the knob slides down over it.

The shaft under the knob is cloverleaf and is ribbed for her pleasure. You can't fit universals to these gear levers very easily without taking a few cm off the top.

This is the earlier 1980-1985 knob which also fits the shaft, as you can see underneath it takes a square section shaft.

Am jealous, this is my ideal spec 205. Towbar, 5 doors and 1.4 petrol.

I have been stockpiling parts like a demented lockdown squirrel with a view to a BIG REFRESH on the 205. 

The big pile so far consists of:

Downpipe, middle section and backbox (with associated gaskets, hangers, bolts and clamps)

It's blowing from somewhere up the front, I don't look of this join and the back box is welded to the centre currently.

The Insight carries on being the best daily driver anyone could wish for.

Still used and enjoyed most days. Still not gotten round to grid charging it, still loving it.  

It's preposterously reliable for such a complex piece of machinery and it's still getting high 60s mpg just doing 2 mile cold runs to the shops and back.

It's got it's knocks, gouges and dents but I think it will shape up to be a fine old crew cab 205.

Fingers crossed, touch wood, hail holy Mary.

I think that is the longest it has ever taken for mats to appear to a Jim Bell fleet addition.
