Brown as fuck: 2001 BMW X5 3.0 - Exxon5!

What mileage is on it?

When was the g/box oil changed? Should be around every 90k Mike’s according to ZF.

This sealed for life shite is purely a sales gimmick and life for BMW means 4 years so most lease companies are clear of it by 90k.

Mine had been done at 92k. Now with 186k I had it done again. Around a £300 touch at an Indy.

Six cylinder X5's used a GM gearbox, similar to the E39 diesel.  The V8's used a ZF but 3.0i and 3.0d were General Motors. They're not a bad unit but when the sump is dropped for an oil change, it's well worth unbolting the valve block and replacing the pressure control solenoid for the torque converter. The part is about 40 quid and is a POP to change.

For the mileage most people do these days the cost of running a big petrol car V running a diesel car might be £10 a week , or 3 pints in a pub, or 22 fags or one cinema ticket, or 2 takeaway meals or 90 seconds with a cheap hooker.

what I'm saying is everyone spends their money differently, I'd sooner be driving something that puts a smile on my face than any of the above

22 fags? Try 16!

Just ordered a new set of rear lights and side repeaters to replace the mismatched, tired looking lights and yellowing repeaters. Gone for gingercators for the sides because I think they suit the gopping colour scheme better.

Headlights will be next if they won’t polish up - they, like the windscreen are wearing every one of those 151,000 miles.

Really , about 6-7 years ago I was in a petrol station the girl in front saiid a packet of something and £5 on pump 5 , they guy said £12 something so they were about £7.50 for 20 then , at the time I thought that's fucking ridiculous £5 in the car but £7.50 on fags

Posted

£12 and a bit the last time I bought a packet a couple of months ago. In London mind.

Probably ever so slightly cheaper round here but not much.

That makes a lot of sense. I think it's costing me about £3 a week more to run my Jag than the Saab I had before, but I much prefer being in the Jag so its worth it.

Probably a narrower figure than that when you figure a petrol of that type is usually cheaper and possibly less liable to go expensively wrong.

I don’t think there’s much in it for bottom of the market X5s but I’m even more intimidated by a high mileage old diesel.

A mate has a 57plate next shape 3.0d,he is getting 23mpg.

This he says is 1mpg better the the Ford Focus ST it  replaced.

*feels strangely smug with his 25mpg and £92 brimmed tank* :-D

As someone else said, smiles per miles makes a big old difference. I'd certainly be better off smoking around in a bangernomic Mondeo diesel but a lot less happy.

My mum had a 2005 x5m with the v8 (not sure if 4.4 or 4.8). I don't think her mileage was much, especially when driving the 2 miles to the local supermarket.

She's gone sensible now, with an x6m v8.

Where are we up to with these interior shots?

My loins are aching.

I reckon those are all too old to still be outstanding - it saw a BMW main dealer for most servicing of its earlier life.

Takata airbag recall is a lot more recent though.

Good things - still starts and runs fine after a week at work.

Bad things - oil leak. Looks more like it’s been flung off the undertray when I’ve driven off this morning though.

Posted

Usual place is the rocker box gasket.

Mine also had a leak from the sump gasket which necessitated dropping the front subframe. The oil had destroyed the engine mounting as well.

Posted

It had the rocker gaskets done not that long ago. Maybe the sump. Joy.

Looked a lot blacker than the oil currently is so hopefully just historic and sitting on the undertray #blindoptimism

Hahaha. Nothing about it is broken enough for me to scream “I know my rights m8”

Probably the best customer they could ever hope for.

Get it back - hope you get a panda as a courtesy car

It’s sleeping in a dodgy car park tonight because I’ve been getting drunk as fuck remembering a fallen hero of mine. Will collect it tomorrow if I’m sober enough.

Rubber mats were delivered today - front, back and boot.

Have a look around the oil filter housing this seems to be a common leaky bit. You can forgive it a lot because of the interior.

"Steering may not operate", brakes and seatbelts. You'd hope so!
