Sub thousand quid estate

I’ve been tasked with finding a sub thousand quid estate, within a reasonable distance from Sheffield. Needs to be reliable, none of the usual ‘only overheats on Tuesday afternoon bollocks. Needs to have plenty of test and a good clutch cause it will be up and down Porlock hill 4-5 times a day.

I could look on Autotrader but I’d asked on here if anyone had anything, chances are it might have been looked after. I’ll look on the autotrader instead then...

No, not quite. It’s just before the Somerset border. I live in Sheffield but my old man who wants one is in Somerset, most of the stuff down there is mega expensive for what it is.

Can you wait a month or so, and is the south coast a reasonable distance from Sheffield?

In no rush, it’s for a contract shifting luggage for people, not far maybe 10 miles which will involve going up and down Porlock Hill, which if you aren’t familiar with it, is like a cliff face. So... a good clutch is essential. It’s country roads so petrol or diesel isn’t a big issue.

I was thinking along the lines of a Octavia SDI but these have mostly been cabbed to death.

I have a vague recollection of a whiff of overheating friction linings, and that was going down the hill :)

Garage in the village does a roaring trade in changing brake pads and warped discs. If your used to it you hang on to low gear all the way down 2nd/3rd just touching the brakes from time to time, however people being dead from the neck up these days you get loads in Quashqais going down in 4th with the foot on the brakes.

Going up it is a bastard as well on a car, half way up you’ve a very tight hairpin on a ridiculous incline. Again you get idiots that stop just before it then set off, killing the clutch when a well timed double clutch into first and accelerate round it saves a shit load of wear to the drivetrain.

I'd be looking for a v6 omega estate.

I've done Porlock Hill in the A4 without realising. Well I've only just realised it was one of the steepest hills now you've said. Was the first place I realised that the A4 will auto-brake when going down hill on cruise control if it can't maintain a set speed.

I went up and down it in a mk3 golf cabby. It was pretty uneventful like most things mk3 golf.

Are you sure you didn’t take the toll road? I’m surprised you got past the incline going towards Gloucester in a Mk3 Golf :)

Is this not an ideal opportunity for either a badermatic, or given this is AS, CVT of some kind? Using the gear hold decending steep hills is a piece of piss.

Could be. Cars down there are mental prices. A few months ago I was down, a local place had an 06 plate Focus on at £2500.

You can find some really old stuff down there but a lot gets moved by word of mouth. At the home my mum was in one of the relatives of another client had a base spec 85 B plate, cream 190E. Still had the original hubcaps on it. Cloth seats and manual. Max undesirable to most but to me it looked the bomb.

Mines here, £650 with a years test. Glasgow though! Diesel manual with higher miles but well maintained with history.
