Does anybody have any experience with these, are they worth having? I have an Android phone, any recommendations out there for one that works with VAG group cars?

I've got an ELM 327 off eBay for £4, perfect for what I want, downloaded torque lite for Android and it tells me what I want, can see and clear codes.

I also have an elm327 off the bay it's branded 'xtrons' and is used in our Sharan and works perfectly with torque lite. Usually carry it with me in what ever car I am driving these days.

I have an OBDLink MX jobby permanently plugged into The Aero's OBDII socket, which I use with my Android phone and Android tablet. Expensive (I paid £114 for mine last year) but excellent.

Pay a couple quid for the full version of Torque and put your phone on the top of the dash to reflect off the windscreen and get the full Knight Rider experience.

... The Lite version works just fine for 99% of the things I need tbh

vag non engine codes can be done with vcds lite without paying a penny, the locked software offers some functionality to read codes

this cable on hamazun https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B07CQFB2K7/

software is from these chaps http://www.ross-tech.com/products.php

runs fine from my laptop running windows10

worked a treat on a 2002 Polo to read codes for a steering fault

Newer vag might need more functionality from full unlocked software.

Cheap android reader here too! Coupled with Oh No Renault and a similar very detailed vauxhall one I found, has done me so far! (not used either for aaaages now I know what causes my eml to come on and the Zafira has gone 3 months without shitting itself in any electrical way

How old VAG? Mk3 golf will need VCDS which I have if you need it, but you'll have to give me warning so I can get the software working.

Anything newer a £3 bluetooth ELM327 and "Torque" app will diagnose the engine stuff pretty well, but you'll still need VCDS for the rest of it.

2006, thanks for the offer though Cobblers! I thought you might contribute to this thread.:-) The mk 3 has gone to 'yes oui si', I bought a cheap code reader for that which worked OK but I'm thinking I should try some of that there new technology!

This may be of use for some people, I use an EML-327 coupled with "ELMScan Toyota" on my 2000MY 3.0 V6 JDM YO Estima which uses a Jap standard rather than OBDII proper.

Do we have a list of brands and the diagnostic apps that work well with them? or is this thread it?

I bought one of these & downloaded the app, but am unsure what to do next.

I tried & eventually managed to pair the dongley thing to my phone whilst it was plugged into the Vel Satis,

but then the car flashed up a ECS failure, so I unplugged it and then the car wouldn't turn on the starter and then it would.

I am panicked, what am I doing/have I done wrong?
