4x4 versions of standard cars

Anyone remember some of the obscure 4x4 versions of normal cars like the Cavalier 4x4?

There was a spate of these wasn't there, around that time, like the Sierra XR4x4.

Here is my slightly more obscure offering -

Think they made 4x4 versions of most of the post-war saloons.   I know these were off-roaders primarily not Quattro-busters but any excuse.....

Wasn't there a 4x4 405 as well?

Yes, both in regular and Mi16x4 flavours. Euro markets got the 200hp T16 version too which was 4WD

They did the 405 in the uk as a petrol 1.9 in basic trim as 4x4, mainly intended as a work car. No idea if any survive.

525ix was 4x4 wasn't it?

There was a Escort Mk5 RS2000 4x4

Ford also made 4WD versions of posh Sierras and Granadas as well as the sporty XR4x4

What’s the difference between a Golf County and a Syncro?

There was also the very rare 2.9i Sierra GLS. Usually on steelies with hubcaps.

Always gets a mention in this case, the oddly 4x4'd Eagle Sport, also available in wagon.

The Golf Country is on stilts, the Golf Syncro looks like a regular Golf.

They also did a 2.0 GLS 4x4 one with the I4 twin cam if memory serves.

I had a Renault 21 turbo Quadra back in the day. Brill car that was.

Anybody mentioned Espace Quadra yet? Apparently the first car with carbon fibre driveshaft.

Volkswagen weren't kidding around when they built the MK2 Gold Country. It can't have been all that cheap to build/purchase compared to a regular MK2 Golf.

A Friend has a Renner Scenic RX4. It is quite frankly the worst pile of shit I have ever seen. The 4x4 system appears to have been engineered by a blind drunkard using the very cheapest possible cheese, The tyres are a size not available anywhere in the UK, the engine is overworked, and has hence shat it's head gasket, the interior trim is kak and it's really not very large. It also has shite ground clearance, and the spare wheel on the boot gets in the way of everything.

Utter Autoshite.

Mark 3 Granada

Did these have the same Quality Engineering* as the Sierra 4x4 system, which had the front differential bolted to the side of the engine sump, with one driveshaft actually running through the insides of the sump to get to the other side?

Heath Robinson would be proud*
