Funnily enough I managed to get something accomplished by contacting the CEO of a large company this morning after a number of requests had been made to their support team to no avail.

There was, however, criminality involved with the use of their service and that seems to have pricked up the CEO's ears...

And @LightBulbFun if I ever get a job at the DVLA, you're welcome to kill me slowly with two-stroke fumes in a locked garage.

Dez, surely if you had not been checking up on your car on DVLA every day, like most of us, you would not have been aware of this "problem" as you see it? 

And I think if I received a new but correct V5 unexpectedly, I would just shrug, and put it in the file with all my other odd V5s.  And get on with something else.

Just saying.

Who gets to decide when government documents are issued?  Is it the government department responsible for the administration of vehicles in the United Kingdom, or is it one member of the public who happens to be the registered keeper of ONE of the 41 million vehicles currently registered?

Honestly dude.  I'm lost as to what the problem is here.  And I really don't think (unpopular opinion) anyone owes you either an apology or an explanation.

That's actually not a bad idea.  You could enquire about getting a job fixing anomalies in the DVLA's various databases.  It would be a good use of your very particular set of skills™, and would also bring in some extra cash for the kingpin fund.  I imagine you could work from home 99% of the time with a job like that, although you might have to go to Swansea once a month or so for meetings - that should be fun*, nearly the entire length of the M4 in REV...

Yeah but the trouble is he would never get any work done, too busy checking out the 1970s light fittings, and all the old logbooks in the basement, and then there are all those Welsh girls...

He could work from home , he knows shit loads about computers...he said so . And thats why he wanted the Invacar in the first place , to get a job ..he said that too! LOL !

Okay, I think Dez is taking this a bit too seriously but there is a genuine underlying issue here. Out of the blue he's been sent a new V5 that he didn't ask for, wasn't expecting and has no apparent changes. That's not normal so for it to happen without any explanation should surely arouse some suspicion. If you had a new and apparently identical V5 for one of your cars suddenly plop through your door and you hadn't the faintest idea why, wouldn't you question it? Dez is fortunate in that his knowledge of the DVLA has allowed him to deduce why it happened, but most people would see it as a complete mystery and think something nefarious might be happening.

ok imagine one morning, your helping a fellow Ford owner with their ford, and you look up and see it comes back as a Citroen?!

but you know for a fact, the registration mark is correct, the vehicle is a ford and previous documents and logbooks back this up, but you start to look up some other Fords as a sanity check, and they all come back as Citroens as well!

 

and then suddenly, your very own Ford Sierra, Comes back as a Citroen Sierra instead! despite the fact you have not asked the DVLA to make this change or anything of the sort

and almost every other currently taxed ford you try all come back as "CITROEN" instead

 

surely you can see the problem here, and how its a system wide issue, and not just an issue with 1 particular vehicle, its something they have done on the back end that has affected all Fords 

this is what the DVLA have done with Invacars basically 

 

now of course the right thing to do would be to revert whatever it is they messed up to make all Fords suddenly show up as Citroens

 

so you write to the DVLA asking them what you think the issue is, and  and how it might be fixed

but rather then the DVLA actually fixing the issue, they bodge your Sierra's record, so now its not part of the normal system and starts becoming a problem to use with automated/online tools, services and the such like

 

thats the issue I am facing with Invacar and REV atm with the DVLA, its now an issue 2 fold

 

1: they made made all fords show up as Citroens (INVACAR vs INVACARE)

2: they are not fixing it properly and are just bodging a singular vehicle record instead (removing REV from the coded system and just manually typing in INVACAR rather then fixing root cause)

 

does this analogy make sense? I get that this is a fairly deep technical thing, but I do genuine want to try and make sure people understand it, so they can see why I am so serious about it

 

and im sure you can imagine that if this did happen to Ford, I think you would agree, it would get fixed properly, quite quickly, so I dont see why INVACAR should not also be fixed properly

There's that saying about arguing with people on the internet, and I want to make absolutely sure that I don't fall into that trap.  You are absolutely obsessed about this detail, and nothing I or anyone else says is going to change your opinion of it.  So I wish you every success in your pursuit. 

Please just remember to be courteous in all of your dealings with people; they are often underpaid and overworked - dealing with shit day in day out.  I'm absolutely sure you'll be nothing other than immaculate, patient and polite whilst dealing with people whose priorities and focusses are different to yours.

I think we can all see where you are coming from, but all you are legally required to do as an owner is to notify if your own V5 is incorrect.

How they fix it is up to them.  If they have enough individual complaints about a particular issue they will do something about it properly, but otherwise it really isn't your fight.

As said, remember that you are dealing with people who are just doing their day job, and for many of them it isn't a great job.

I just have to wonder would the complaints department even be able to hand it off to the right people? I need a direct line to the DVLA's computer systems/IT support desk, but its not exactly something they seem to readily supply

Can you visit the DVLA? I remember Nick larkin did in PC in the late 90s and he was basically given free reign to check on old omnibus registrations. Went in a souped up jag mk X IIRC

Presumably they run a tighter ship these days

 Will there be a rejection  fron dvla , for  a new v5  or whatever,  for any newly discovered  or abandoned  Invacar ?  That would be good  to keep the prices high.

I'm lost.

I have a MGB that I've owned for the best part of 50 years and wouldn't be even slightly concerned if the make was recorded as BL rather than MG, in fact some later ones had BL badges on the wings. It wouldn't affect my enjoyment of it, it's just a reference on a form.

I assume the 'bodge' you refer to is in response to a communication from you, where they've tried to help you.

I'm sure for the right kind of guru meetings could be attended virtually. 

Most staff where I work WFH all the time. I don't even bother to put my camera on for most of my meetings.
