As a Vw hater this has caught my attention.......now bought :)

As a small child I paid way too much attention to model and trim designations of neighbours’ cars. Next door had a brown one of these; what was “FORMEL-E” all about?

I had a Formel-E

5 speed box with a little light on the dash that told you when to change into 5th but man it was soooooo tall. No way could you accelerate in 5th.

Did quite a lot of miles in this - carb issues when new, fixed by the garage, nothing else of note really - no PAS and no servo on the brakes.

I had one of these which had lowish miles on an A plate with 1.3 GL trim in a lovely metallic brown with a boot and square headlamps with washers and in the couple of years I had the car it never put a foot wrong and I replaced it with a Gti and to be honest the polo was a far more nimble fun car to drive.

I gave mine away to my brother who then gave it too his girlfriend and the poor immaculate car ended up trashed within a year then was just bridged.

My '83 breadvan had a higher compression 1100cc engine with really long 3rd and 4th gears, so much so that top speed was officially in 3rd, at 95. There wasn't a stop-start thing, just the econometer and amber warning light.

Light as a feather with iffy brakes, crap damping and bad understeer, it was at least reliable and made everything which followed feel an improvement - for example a 2cv felt like a really modern, well-engineered design clad with an ancient body.

arb bushes are worth replacing /upgrading ...worn ones makes for some strange situations involving ditches and soiled undercrackers

I really fancy a 1.3 Ranger. I love the natty little roof bars and twin headlights. Did these come with a 5 speed box?

My mk2 polo is a 5 speed but I'm pretty sure all of the saloons were 5 speeds.

My impression of these things is of a car that VW made by mistake, and the only reason any of them didn't go on forever was their owners died, got bored with them, or forgot where they parked them.

I may have relatives with a bit* of a reputation for killing cars in short order. One of these in doom blue withstood their punishment for many, many years. It may even be that they no longer have it because they were offered something for free that they fancied more, and gave their long suffering breadvan away. If I could remember the reg (they won't, it's not the sort of thing they do, they don't know the reg of their current car) I'd find out if it's still alive somewhere.

I had a breadvan over 20 years ago now, it was a ‘84 car with the earlier engine but it wasn’t a bad old thing. As others have said the carbs seem to need constant attention with the rubber mounting block being a favourite fail, brakes are more like an early 60’s car, look out for a rotten fuel tank, and water ingress causing soggy front floors will be a rotten battery tray and bulkhead area.....

please dont try and fit massive shit wheels by hammering the arches

I learned to drive and passed my test in a fastback / coupe variant of one of these, so I have a soft spot for them.

I will just make it look as good as it can without losing its history. :) And prevent anything worsening. I would like to get some period mudflaps for it as i like them with mudlfaps :) Then put it away for a few years. :)

Anyone know the colour so i can get a touch up stick ?

fantastic, my first car was a later one -  K reg 1.3 litre, genesis breadvan. Loved it, no real issues to speak of and fantastic tartan seats.

This low mileage 1.0 C is £1400: Lovely looking, distinctive cars and despite owning a1.0 C in the late 90's I'd sort of forgotten about them.

my second* car was exactly like this, same age, colour, trim only mine had gained one of them glass dealer fitted sunroofs at some point

F184MUP.

i ran the car for the better part of 5 years and 50,000 odd miles, until a puncture one night put it into a brick wall. which killed it.

and the insurance pay out after my excess was what i'd paid for the car in the first place. it was ace, dating from when VW really, really did build a good car. proper steel, proper paint and sealing, they were (unlike everything they have made since 1991) really well thought out and put together.

i still think fondly of mine....

so well bought sir, well bought! i'll even have a couple of numbers when the roffle begines!

*the first car was a skoda estelle 120L, the less said about that, the better, other than i did sell it on for a profit!

Can't remember what colour that is but VAG like to put their colour code stickers in the boot by the spare wheel. On a paper sticker. It probably isn't still there

Lift the battery out and have a look first chance you get, it's THE rot spot on these, it lets water straight through onto the pedals, which is super.  Does look a smart one that, I do miss mine even though it wasn't exactly the most exciting thing in the world.  Everything about it was adequate providing you weren't on a motorway.

Its been pissing rain here. And remained dry so fingers crossed it ok :) i have googled and found the colour to be i think, stratos blue... Will see when touch up arrives. :)

Aye. I went to meet a chap to buy an old Merc. The merc wasnt for me, but this spoke out to me from the side of the street and as luck would have it was for sale. :)

if the car is unmolested, there should be a factory sticker on the back panel under the boot lock bit that should have the paint and trim codes printed on it.

I’m thinking it’s stratos blue, but I could be wrong. It doesn’t help that manufacturers (not least VAG) have a habit of recycling old paint names, so there have probably been five different stratos blues since then.

My uncle has an L-reg breadvan that he has used as his daily driver since about 1998.  Doesn't care about it, flogs it to Hell and back and occasionally gets some welding done on.

I rather like it.

I'm going "A5Z" blue metallic but Stratos "LA5Z" is also a good call. Further Googling shows Stratos looks like it got reused as suggested as there are at least two different codes for Stratos Blue. Also found a Tossablau in my travels around the internet which should be good for starting a few arguments in paint shops.
