Good to meet Jim B., his missus and the pointy dog. The car is nice, a credit to its former keepers but it feels quite sluggish compared to the 110PS Octavias I've driven before, it's not a lot heavier than an Octavia. Comfy and super economical though, 60MPG+ average which is great for a new large estate let alone a 20 year old one.

Day off today so decided to make use of the generous service kit included with the car and have a poke around the engine.

 

 

Shedded sound deadening material and a free screwdriver!

 

 

The possibly original pollen filter was disgusting.

These cars have a reputation for leaks around the scuttle and the pollen filter was mercifully dry after last night's rain but the plastic scuttle material is utter junk and there's water pooling below the brake servo, does that water eventually make its way to the drain under the battery?

 

Also changed the fuel filter and primed it with ATF to clean the injectors. It goes a little better now but still seems slower than it should be, there's a whistle/whoosh at 2000rpm that could be air escaping.

It won't be appearing on any consumer watchdog programmes.

 

Attempt to trace the leak when the air con is engaged. No leak today. Shrug.

I was saluting in a solemn farewell. I just happened to be holding a packet of fig rolls while I was doing it.

There's the air conditioning condenser drain pipe, behind the passenger footwell carpet on the right, the carpet takes some manipulation to move it far enough to gain access.

 

 

You can't see it very well but the drain is full of water, I used some plastic tubing to clear it and a lot of gunk came out with it. Hopefully FIXED.

there are rubber drainage tubes in the scuttle which will be blocked if water is pooling in that area, one under the servo & one under the battery tray. Either poke them clear or just push them out. The scuttle on mine kept filling up with leaves.

The windscreen scuttle plastics are such a lash up, at least the ECU is well guarded.

Leave the scuttle panel blocked, it’ll weigh more when you bridge it.
