Lacquer Peel Posted July 8, 2018 Posted July 8, 2018 Good to meet Jim B., his missus and the pointy dog. The car is nice, a credit to its former keepers but it feels quite sluggish compared to the 110PS Octavias I've driven before, it's not a lot heavier than an Octavia. Comfy and super economical though, 60MPG+ average which is great for a new large estate let alone a 20 year old one. Vegan doner kebab in Byker. Nice! Central Scotland achieved. Pat Earrings Posted July 8, 2018 Posted July 8, 2018 I feel a sentiment attached to this. So pleased it's stayed on here oldcars, Lacquer Peel, Floatylight and 1 other 4

Jim Bell Posted July 9, 2018 Author Posted July 9, 2018 I "think" its for holding packets of tissues or wet wipes? I stuck my sunglasses in there because Im dead cool like Tom Selleck.
oldcars Posted July 9, 2018 Posted July 9, 2018 What is this? What is point? That's class. I would use it to hold emergency dash wipes, for when the valeting urge takes you. Lacquer Peel 1

Lacquer Peel Posted July 11, 2018 Posted July 11, 2018 Day off today so decided to make use of the generous service kit included with the car and have a poke around the engine. Shedded sound deadening material and a free screwdriver! The possibly original pollen filter was disgusting. These cars have a reputation for leaks around the scuttle and the pollen filter was mercifully dry after last night's rain but the plastic scuttle material is utter junk and there's water pooling below the brake servo, does that water eventually make its way to the drain under the battery? Also changed the fuel filter and primed it with ATF to clean the injectors. It goes a little better now but still seems slower than it should be, there's a whistle/whoosh at 2000rpm that could be air escaping.
Jim Bell Posted July 11, 2018 Author Posted July 11, 2018 Fuuuuck man. Sorry to see that. I blame all former owners. Certainly not one of my screwdrivers, I never had one near it (not even to change the ahem, pollen filter which I really should have checked)
Lacquer Peel Posted July 11, 2018 Posted July 11, 2018 It wasn't an attempt to shame any of the previous keepers man! It's a nearly 20 year old car and it's fine for the money. It won't be appearing on any consumer watchdog programmes. Attempt to trace the leak when the air con is engaged. No leak today. Shrug. I did discover a vintage* Nokia hands free kit though. Bonus. CGSB, overrun, HillmanImp and 3 others 6
HillmanImp Posted July 11, 2018 Posted July 11, 2018 Were you upset to see the car go JB? It's no reason to blow your brains out, there are plenty more of these around for now. Mally, Lacquer Peel, binhoker668 and 2 others 5

Lacquer Peel Posted July 11, 2018 Posted July 11, 2018 There's the air conditioning condenser drain pipe, behind the passenger footwell carpet on the right, the carpet takes some manipulation to move it far enough to gain access. You can't see it very well but the drain is full of water, I used some plastic tubing to clear it and a lot of gunk came out with it. Hopefully FIXED. steveo3002, Bucketeer, Jim Bell and 5 others 8

It goes a little better now but still seems slower than it should be, there's a whistle/whoosh at 2000rpm that could be air escaping. there are rubber drainage tubes in the scuttle which will be blocked if water is pooling in that area, one under the servo & one under the battery tray. Either poke them clear or just push them out. The scuttle on mine kept filling up with leaves. Lacquer Peel 1
Lacquer Peel Posted July 11, 2018 Posted July 11, 2018 The windscreen scuttle plastics are such a lash up, at least the ECU is well guarded.
Cavcraft Posted July 11, 2018 Posted July 11, 2018 Leave the scuttle panel blocked, it’ll weigh more when you bridge it. Lacquer Peel 1
Pat Earrings Posted July 11, 2018 Posted July 11, 2018 WTF. I never actually got round to servicing it but the screwdriver?! Hilarious and scary
