Mercedes Benz - W123 230E & W124 200E - Both happy and working ok

According to a copy of Autocar magazine dating back to 1991, a pre-options W124 200E retailed at £19,020 whilst Ford wanted £19,435 for a Granada 2.9i Ghia. Take your pick.

Don't forget the extra cost for the MB-Tex and sunroof, I think by this late stage the electric front windows might have been standard. A radio wouldn't have been though , or an aerial !

One car I regret parting with, a non sacco board 200E manual with keep fit windows and not much else. Hammered it through Germany and loved every minute. Sold it for 4 hundred quid because I was a bit skint and kick myself every day since. Sigh.

Watching this fred with interest.. and just as an aside, those rear aches ARE structural.. within 30cm of a seatbelt mounting I'm afraid..

Another extremely thick coat of shutz over it then and a wing and a prayer the MOT man won't notice.

I dismantled a pair of my son’s Pokemon tin boxes and screw fixed the repair panels* in place.

Gotta patch 'em all

I’ve just checked out the details, that car was last MoTd and taxed in 2011/12.

Shame, looks a honey in your photo.

I bought the car on Monday afternoon and the logbook arrived this morning. How the hell does that work?

Posted

If the dealier did the change online, they seem to be a lot faster to arrive than if posted off.

Posted

Online works well. Odd thing is no signature required so unlike a paper transaction. If you use it you then have to use the new keeps number on the V5 to tax thought you don't send the slip off.

Posted

Its a slight reassurance when buying that its immediately in your name.

Posted

Not using the new keepers number means the old owners tax was cancelled immediately and you are untaxed. No 'get you home' period as using the post system. APNR would clock you as untaxed probably.

I know, it was a cracker. A Pineappler bought it I think. I tidied up the wings, stuck some new boots on it and took it home to Stuttgart. No idea why it died so soon.

Here it is at the  W124 Estate factory in Bremen.

I bought one of those £47 Argos dual action polishers to buff up my Boxster but it made sense to practice on the old Benz first, plus it really needed a spit and polish.

I sprayed on a mist of water onto the panels and spent an hour going around the car using a five year old bottle of T-Cut, then a quick coat of Autoglym polish. The paint came up a treat, shines really nice. I touched up a few stone chips and now the 200E looks like new, well almost.

A few arty farty shots taken to celebrate my achievement.

This is my favourite version of the W124. I like the Bruno Sacco panels and much prefer the large grille, black bumper inserts and amber indicators, which the phase three cars lost.

That is mega mega mega. My fave combo of early 90’s merc’s are trims and gingercators.

Looks ace.

My first boss had a 200E auto in white with cloth seats, which "used a lot of oil", but according to the dealer they all did that so that they lasted forever...

+11111 on the Sacco panels and yellow indicators. Looks lovely! I assume  the cheap Argos polisher was worth its money?

Yep, very easy to use and the results are great. Recommended.

Completely approve of this, always had a soft spot for Mercs of this era :)

still think these scream CLASS better than their modern day compatriots

Nice. I've just realised looking at your pics my car is missing all its rear badges... perhaps I'll badge it as a 200 E?

More likely I'll badge it as a 430 'cos poseur!  :)

My favorite Pokemon is Squirtle.

This car makes me want to make a little squirtle too.

I popped over to the Enfield Pageant this morning. Easy cruising on the M25.

This afternoon I stripped off the sill cladding and front wings.

Aside from mostly innocent surface rust, the jacking points were found solid whilst the sills looked brand new.

A quick tidy up with a wire brush drill attachment followed by a coat of Hammerite and job done.

Tomorrow I’m going to tackle the front wings. I bought a 700g tub of filler today, hopefully that will be enough.

Great progress! Also spotted the OSF tyre is a conti- generally considered the tyre of choice for these and IMO a good sign, as are those sills- most of mine were never that solid even 10 yrs back.

Great work man.  Though I was hoping for more use of while tape, toothpaste, baccy tins and Artex.

All four tyres are matching nearly new Continentals. The previous owner didn’t give a shit about cosmetics but must have spent ££££ on maintenance.

Give it 24 hours, wait and see what I’ve got planned for the front wings.

Sounds like an A1 dude.  I bet he wore a beard and bought artisan cheese and ate it on Aldi bread.

He was a she and she had it for 15 years.

But gender apart you’re probably right.
