What a stonking purchase! Well bought sir.

I'm running around in the XC70 of this shape and loving it. It's the 215bhp D5 but  shares the gearbox and AWD at least. Need to own a V8 Volvo soon!

It's a lovely thing and goes rather well.

Happy to bumble along, and lift it's folkdräkt when prodded.

Thanks for the chance to peruse it..

I think the seller was confused when I turned up in the GSA..

Never heard of a V8 Volvo!

Normally I would not even notice one of those but with a V8, that sounds like a great Q car

Mild envy ☺

Wait, was this in Low Cost High Liability?

Are you the first to actually buy a car from that thread?

Actually no it was in the Monaro thread. Although if it appeared in the LCBL thread too I wouldn't be surprised. And on that note ...

The drive home was uneventful and very pleasant. My lovely wife and I then headed out to the cinema and on the way I noticed a growling grinding noise from the engine when proceeding at low speed. This wasn't there on the journey home from work. And it's not the good expected sort of growly, more like a noise of protest. It's accompanied by a metal rattly ringy sort of noise that sort of sounds like someone rattling some ballbearings in a can. I don't know if autos of this kind have a clutch release bearing but if they did that's what I would think it was.

I'm wondering if the gearbox is fucked.

Videos of the noise follow. You may also hear a squeaky rear suspension noise, I was aware of that issue when buying the car.

This is the best I can manage (yes I'm one of *those* people)f659196ffffba91f0dc7d4c531f703df.jpg

...that spends more on vapour and equipment than they ever did on fags!

When a Geartronic gives up it normally bangs, hunts and crashes through upshifts or downshifts and will refuse to go into certain gears.

Does the car have a timing chain?

That's a good question to which I don't know the answer. I agree that the symptoms I'm experiencing don't seem to fit gearbox failure.

binding brake caliper? do any of the wheels get hot after a run? I think you said it had sat on the dealers lot for a while before you bought it?

I suspect anything engine-related would have chucked up an error code on the dash?

I dunno - the underbonnet video sounds atrocious, but cameras can pick up certain sounds better than others so its maybe not that bad in real life?

I would strongly recommend getting it looked at by someone qualified.

It's that bad in real life :(

I've got a proper sound recorder at home, I'll take some hopefully more accurate audio of the problem this evening.

This times a million.

It's impossible to tell from videos and often bloody hard to tell when you're under the bonnet looking at the damn engine.

Google can be of help, it can also make you think a million other things are wrong with it.

Start with the basics-does the noise rise and fall with revs or with road speed?

If with revs does it come from the aux belt area?

The videos are  a bit indististinct but it sounds like power steering pump or an idler to me Best of luck with it and I hope it's cheap to fix. Doesn't seem like gearbox though....

I'm getting it looked at by a specialist but they don't have availability until next Tuesday. I asked my friendly local mechanic to look at it and he couldn't hear anything (I was at work). I'm going to ask other friendly local mechanic as well.

I would say that was an idler pully! I once bought a bini cooper s that the owner thaught the charger was nackard it turned out to be an 8 quid pully!

When metal things are under load and spinning really fast and fail its amazing the noises they make!

Thats not a bad shout Jams, my Saab 9-3 made terrible noises when the alternator bearing was kippered, I thought it had borked its turbo or worse, the resultant £250 bill for a new alternator, belt and tensioner was much less bad than I was expecting.

I think it has appeared in that thread . I bet it has a good stereo just turn it up until you can’t hear the noise.

Who was it said aircon? Imaginary cookie to that man. Failing clutch on the aircon compressor. Not a super cheap repair but a million times better than I was fearing.
