Festival of the Unexceptional on Saturday 14th July 2018, 10am to 3 pm.

Although this is a Concours d'Elégance event it is for non posh classic cars and the winners last year were:

Best in Show: 1983 Datsun Sunny 1.5 GL

Second Place: 1972 Daf 33

People’s Choice: 1972 Austin Allegro SS

The best bit is along with the judged cars there is a fantastic display of every day cars from the past (pre1988), when was the last time you saw 3 Hyundai Stellers together!

Visitors with later cars are still welcome but were asked to park separately and the best bit is there was no charge for any of this from Hagerty Insurance who laid it on.

The event attracted a good number of Autoshiters last year and it was suggested that this year we add a Field of Dreams Open Day to the weekend as we are only 8 miles from the event and we have agreed to do that.

So free camping for all Autoshiters all weekend.

Car tinkering on your own car or ours

Thanks for the offer - I'd like to take you up on the camping please.

I was about to put my hand up for camping, but I'll be in the Invacar, and I'm not sure I can get much camping gear in it...

Ooh, wonder if I can get the clutch done on the Toledo in time for this..

Pre-arranged drop off of your camping stuff beforehand?

Hoping to be there with the Lada and Invacar, relatively local though so won't need to worry about camping.

Who needs a tent? Just sleep in the car!

Oh, wait...

I will definitely be there for the day on the 14th.

However I'm still deciding what to bring...  The bike would be a more appropriate attendee, but I can't ride it there so I'd have to either rent a van for the weekend, or pass my trailer test and then rent a trailer to put behind the Saab.

Mrs H would come for the day but I'm not sure I'd be able to persuade her into camping.  Will have a chat with her.  This chat will involve telling her that you're all nice people, OK?

If I come and camp, I have spare tents so I can bring one for Dollywobbler to sleep in.

There are too many variables in this post...

A sub-750kg trailer, and certain combinations of vehicle and trailer are covered by your post-1997 license. You only need a towing licence if you're towing a MAM of over 3500kg.

.. and there is an outside chance I may have a trailer available for you. How long is your skoooter?

Slightly smaller than my bicycle in all dimensions except height and weight.

Is that right about towing small things?  I didn't think I was allowed to tow anything (July 1997 pass).

You can tow car and trailer combinations up to 3500kg mam. The mam bit is important (maximum authorised mass) as it is the maximum laden weight of the car and the maximum laden weight of the trailer added together, NOT their actual weights.

Max all-up weight of a 9-5 is 2180 kg, so you can tow a trailer that has a maximum all-up weight of 1320kg. What you cannot do is tow a large plant trailer capable of weighing 1500kg, even if it only weighs 600kg with your bike on board.

..and you've towed trailers before have you not? Thinking of a certain horsebox on the arsemobile..

Either way, a 1200kg max-weight trailer is legal for you to tow. Or anything smaller.

Seriously thinking about coming along but I'm not sure I'll be able to camp!

where is this happening?

Near Buckingham. Event itself is at Stowe House on the 14th. I believe entries open next month.

I had no idea I wasn't allowed to, and the hire company didn't check!  Given the hoops I had to jump through to get my hands on the rented van last weekend, I doubt that would happen these days.

For all that we like to complain about government IT (usually with good reason) it's far easier to get hold of solid information these days.  Last time I tried to find this out I was completely stumped, but today:

https://www.gov.uk/towing-with-car

Totally clear and unambiguous, and with a .gov.uk suffix straight from the horse's mouth.

I'll measure the bike when I pop out to the shops later.

Last year the entries were for those who wished to have there cars judged, visitors just turned up and were directed to the pre 1988 parking adjacent to the judged cars or front car parking for modern's and post 1988.

This is tempting. I'm not sure what I'll be coming down in yet but it is post-MOT exemption day so that widens the possibilities somewhat.

I was planning on visiting RantingYoof of a weekend sometime in the summer. This seems like a good weekend to do it! I won't be driving there though.

Unless I get the job in Birmingham that I interviewed for the other day...

thanks for that ,i normally go to classic lemans , which is on around then, but not going this year

Hmm. Yes. Tempting. I'm off work that weekend.

It was great last year. A bit like Shitefest, but with a really posh stately home as the backdrop. The Sierra Base really needs to be there.

I will be there but I think in something else. Not sure what yet, all depends on next weekend and if I actually end up collecting the new toy or not....

Camping available but not compulsory.

The FoU finishes at 3pm so a convoy to the FoD straight afterwards for a late afternoon / evening get together could still be fun for those who can't or would rather not stay the night.

Two drivers, double shuffle, or does the Invacar fit in the back of the Lada?

We're less than half an hour away, so probably just do two runs, unless I can convince my other half that the Lada won't try too hard to kill him in 15 or so miles! Would like to have the Xantia along as well too, they're one of those cars that fall well into the "were everywhere but are now almost extinct" category.
