Oil change time again, and a general check over, starting to show her age here and there, but will hopefully go on for another wee while yet.šŸ¤ž

Mines conked out this morning, ā€˜Engine Malfunction’ and ESP light and limp cock mode. Only does it cold, plugging it in shows issue with boost, I suspect it’s either a duff intercooler hose - it still has the original plastic one from the intercooler to the dozer valve. Or possibly it’s the variable vanes coked up and its causing the actuator to stick first thing in a morning. I’ll change the hoses as I have some anyway and investigate if the vacuumĀ solenoid is working and if the plunger on the actuator is seizing.Ā

Just been in a Mk4 2.0tdci taxi, it had done 830,000 kms. Apart from a decomposed gearknob it felt in good shape.Ā

FML,had this happen today, expansion tank cap decided to disintegrate rather than open šŸ™„

Bit of a bigger to remove the remains from the tank too.

Luckily the main dealer had a new one in stock for the princely sum of €8.57.

Just driven this old girl over and back to the UK.

2,575km in all,well loaded up.

Did numerous run to the recycling center, including getting rid of an old shed(that in itself took three well loaded goes)

Does a car get any better that a mk4 Mondeo?

I had one that had just had a new bag in, I was surprised as it was over 14 years old, wouldn’t have thought they’d bother.Ā

My 2004 e60 had to go to Halliwell Jones for a battery cable. Cheaper than a law suit.

They are recalling those Takata airbags all over the shop, my van (2010 Vito) is in for it next week.Ā

It's a cause of consternation for some owners as there is also an outstanding recall for a dieselgate software fix for most of them, which the lads with remaps and no EGR/DPF etc obviously don't want.

I would have just thought there only a finite length of time they owe you a duty of care so to speak?

I guess not for things that might explode or go on fire

What engine oil do you use when you do a change? Any preference? Is the genuine ford stuff expensive?

5w30 Fully Synth Low Saps. Wouldn’t bother with the genuine Ford oil, it’s just CastrolĀ anyway. Mannol pretty good, expect Ā£60 or so for 20 litres. Bosch for the filters.Ā

The powershite box- learn something new every day or Ford are talking shite.

Finally found a local garage that will change the fluid in the Mondeo.

Very reasonable quote, but no filter itemised.

Went to see them. Ford have told them, there are 3 types of powershift box (news to me) and mine does not have a filter.

Every YT vid I've seen for the Powershite box has a filter.

Booked it in for two weeks time. If they find it does have a filter, they can sort it out with Ford.

In two weeks time, expect a post along the lines of ' Powershift failure' :(

Can be a bit hit and miss with these things. It either buys it some new life or it shits itself on the newer thinner oil. Make sure they are set up for a job like this and they’re not one of these back ā€˜o beyond places that think it’s like changing the fluid on an a Sierra.Ā

Bon chance, mon ami.Ā

I'm quite surprised to hear there's no filter but I've only seen one and that was the one I fixed.Ā

Fluid and filter was really no harder than doing a normal engine oil and cartridge filter. Filling up involved checking the level at a certain temp which needed Forscan/Foreskin but it wasn't hard.Ā

Instinct suggests new fluid can't hurt but I'm no expert. I really hope you continue to disprove the rule that 'all Powershifts are shite m9'.Ā

They are set up ok. Vag specialist and done plenty of dsg boxes.

They were my regular garage, when the Mrs had her TT.

My instincts are the same.

Box is ok at moment, so can't see how 7L of fresh unicorn piss will make it worse.

But I have been wrong before lol

Brimmed the tank on my mk4 recently, approx 70 litres.

Then drove it until the idiot light came on.

It did 1,316 KM,or 818miles to one tank of diesel.

20230822_113311.thumb.jpg.d615b9698d4ce802b2b562e89f89b807.jpg

20230822_113338.thumb.jpg.9f6f68a18ce0d6cf955bbfa03f65b0bd.jpg

It returned 4.5 litres per 100km.

Or 62mpg if you prefer, even allowing for discrepancies, that's impressive from a high(ish) mile 2.0diesel 15 year old estate car.

Had another sticky caliper on my mk4.

Drivers side front this timešŸ™„

20231024_115726.thumb.jpg.095e3569aa9a064aa2584f296072d99e.jpg

Another used caliper sourced.

One rear caliper was also sticking slightly on the handbrake.Ā

So did a clean and lube up of that too.

20231024_124639.thumb.jpg.d45c6671adeaa82274ef7aa129b2fb04.jpg

Rear brake nipples are a crusty mess,so it will probably mean replacement calipers on the rear if it needs any further work here.

Test will be soon too,so will see what happens.Ā

Could this thread be moved back to the modern section please?,as it's a pain to find now.

The mk5 Mondeo is still a modern car.

They don’t seem half as much a PITA as the Mk3 calipers. My MOT is up in a week or two, see how that pans out.Ā

Regen question. 2.0tdci auto.

Today the mk4 mondy got its annual run from Somerset to Northumberland.

At about Worcester it dropped to 5th (its a powershite), revs went to 3k and it stayed that way for 20 ish miles).

I figured it was doing a regen.

Then at about Preston, it did it again for another 20ish miles.

Why would it do two regens?

Ā

Your EGR may be sticking.Ā

Mine jammed slightly open,so I freed it off, then blanked it.

Been ok since.

Impossible to say without plugging it in. See what codes it says and then it’ll give you a closer idea.Ā
