What makes you grin? Antidote to grumpy thread

Continuing the bench test theme, this is my tame Czech mechanic buddy testing a Tatra V8 engine.

Anyway, this is making me grin. Ultimate bench test?

Certainly demonstrates how balanced a 2CV engine is... (sorry, Dyane engine).

Did my internet connection just slow to glacial levels, or is that meant to sound rougher than a bear's arse?

A 2CV engine on open headers is not the smoothest of machines. Bloody loud though! For some reason, every time I do an engine swap, I feel the need to run the engine briefly sans exhaust...

No, the Laguna came as a chop in against the Jag. The Jag has had at least three owners since I had it by my reckoning.

Congrats Panda!

In amongst the lack of sleep and all that, enjoy the little person, they're great fun :D

Watched that dozens of times over the past few weeks - there used to be a very similar one, without the dogs IIRC.

Amazes me how quiet it is.

When I ran my Princess engine with no exhaust the racket was deafening.

ED:

Oops! sorry Panda, congratulations :D

Congrats all round to Panda and his new cub. :D:D

Not sure if this should be in the grumpy or happy thread but being skint and DHSS is now really depressing me but I've been offered work back on the road that isn't too strenuous, just three or four curtainsided drops a day, no overnights or sleeping in the cab, all day work. I really don't know what to do. It'll be better than sitting on my arse all day and moaning. The money isn't anywhere near as good as I used to be on due to the lack of long hours and no nights out in the cab but it'll be a lot more than the £63 a week I'm on now. Sadly it's cards in so I can't claim 45p a mile travelling off the Revenue.

I really don't know what to do..... :?

Get it! It's not just the money, it's being out and about...alright, the weather is shit but, even then, it's no good sitting at home...having some non-work income, I can just about make ends meet without working, but being unemployed is soul-destroying...I positively hate it!

Seconded, take it.

I took a part time cleaning job, the money paid the bills and you were out of the house rather than sitting with nothing to do - it sounds a lark being off work when you are working but it's no fun when you haven't any money to do anything with the time.

+1. We've talked about the abysmal nature of our chosen career before, but as Luxo says, it's a whole lot better than making deeper dents in your settee. If you think your back will stand it (and only time will tell, really) then do it. I would.

100% Agree^^. (Almost) anything's better than relying on the DWP. If you enjoy driving then go for it.

I'm leaning towards going for it. I'll be driving a two year old DAF that I've done thousands of agency miles in before and the seats are about as perfect as I could hope for and I suppose I'll learn to live with the loathsome Arse-tronic autobox.

Even if I only earn £63 a day it's still five times better than £63 a week... Besides, Mrs Claim saw me eyeing up a £3.89 bottle of White Ace cider in the local Costcutter and wasn't amused and made a suggestion that maybe a job or hobby might be a good idea.

It's just that I'm used to better money and a more challenging working environment where I had to solve the odd problem and think on my feet to resolve issues with clients. I'll miss my nights out in truckstops and seeing a bit more of the UK than North West England.

You make the job sound like one tailored for me! :D Stick it out till September and I'll take over...

Take the job - employment and £63/week issues reduced.

Start homebrewing - hobby taken up too!

Honestly you wouldn't!

Half of my drops will be at supermarket regional distribution centres which are the most hateful places in the country. I understand that there are drivers out there who enjoy that sort of work but I can assure you I'm not one of them! Waiting for hours in a waiting room with some of the biggest bullshitters and odious tossers in the road haulage industry, having to buy overpriced crisps from a vending machine, reading a three day old copy of the Mirror desperately trying not to listen to the fat, know it all, been everywhere wanker in the next seat who delights in spouting utter bollocks and casual racism at every opportunity, staring blankly at a tiny TV that always seems to be showing Jeremy Kyle on a constant loop, wishing you'd had the sense to not have that sixth cup of coffee so you wouldn't have to use the disgusting excuse for a toilet that they provide,,,, Hats off to all the decent drivers out there who don't mind this kind of work but as soon as I can go back to doing something more fun then I will.

You just described the "facilities" available to drivers everywhere... :( What the fuck are we, cattle? I mean, Jeremy Kyle... FFS! And yeah, there's always the bullshitters, but you get them in any line of work. TBF, I have heard tales of RDC life (a branch of the job that I've never done) and they are pretty hellish tales.

Look at it this way: half your drops will be those? That must mean the other half will be much more worthwhile, Shirley?

I hope so! It's a piss easy job so I should be grateful for the current driver shortage and the opportunity to earn a living.

Sounds like You've sold it to yourself already Warren,

Why just watch Jeremy Kyle when you can live it??

Seriously, get back driving again, its a come down from what you did but its still trucking

(Grits teeth and prepares to watch 'Mother Truckers' Ch4 Thursday 10pm)
