What makes you grin? Antidote to grumpy thread

The Band of teh Royal Irish Regiment playing "The Sash My Father Wore" in Carrickfergus today. Not terribly correct politically, but it did raise the blood somewhat. They played "Killaloe" on the way to the church and "Amazing Grace" on the way back to the Town Hall, where they played The National Anthem. Even the Police took their hats off and sang. A GREAT day to be British. I went with my friend who was in the same regiment as me (The Royal Irish was formerly The Ulster Defence Regiment) and she had a brill time. Good friends and a good time. It was dead easy to see the ex service personnel when the RSM came along and said "eyes RIGHT!" and all us snapped-to.

It's true -Army friends are friends for life.

Faugh a Ballagh.

I know what you mean Norm, but the Ancient Order of Fenianists aint quite the same. They made a status of being victims. Like the fucking Palestinias

You're right! These days we just get together and complain about the price of petrol, and Jags are good. I said to a mate that I reckon Paisley had as much to do with the Troubles as the IRA, and he stopped speaking to me,.He came back to me after a year and plus and said "Andy, you were right mate"

My late missus Patricia was from the "other" side of the community. Fuck it, I loved her, and I wouldn't have cared if she was from Outer Space, she was mine and that was that. It was at that point that I found out who my real friends were.

There was a bit of humour too in all this. If I was asleep and I needed to get up she'd say "Hey you wee Orange bastard, this is your Fenian wake-up call. We're running all over Royal Avenue and we're gonna take The City Hall". It was a laugh and a joke between us, but some folks were a bit funny about a Protestant man (me) having a relationship with a Roman Catholic woman (Trish), so much so that a bunch of men, and I use the term loosely, came to the door one Saturday morning to express their displeasure at me "taking one of their women". In true Captain Farrell fashion I first produced my pistol. I didn't need to produce my rapier, which was as well as I didn't have a rapier.

A Local hard nut arrived later on and told me we'd be left alone. There was a grudging respect between the British Army (me) and the Provisional IRA. Sure enough, when there was serious rioting thereafter our cars weren't touched.

I want to get out to Ghan, but they say I'm too old (38) for a full deploy.

No cameras on your mobile phones, lads?

Mine takes about a week to get itself ready then the battery dies :(

My phone used to do that, I took the memory card out, put it in a card-reader, transferred all the files off it then formatted the card, now its functioning as it should.

Wow! I was given one of these years ago when I was still at school, it was pretty old then and I knew nothing about mobile phones, a mate once bought in a battery to test it out and I think thats the only time I had it switched on, I sold later on to the same mate. Wish I'd kept it.

Incidently if anyone has one I'd be well interested, it'll help me on my conquest on styling myself after some sort of businessman/Patrick Bateman type from the late 80s/early 90s, I've got the car, suits, overcoats (Camel Biege and Solicitor Blue) briefcase, now I just need the phone.

I had that Phillips C-12 years ago, it was a quality phone! It had the scrolling digits on screen as I remember. I care not for phones, I was given one of these:

(Nokia N95)

because the screen was cracked, and missing everything (cost 10 quid from China for parts) and it's the best techno thing I've used, it had WiFi and tonnes of other stuff and the camera was superb, it broke recently and I'll have to get a new thing for it to work again.

Over a year ago, I was helping out my friend Andreas by stripping some of the scrap cars in his field. A Brit over here on holiday turned up to join in, and was assisting me with these cars (Sierra and Metro).

When we packed up, I failed to find one of the sockets from my 40-year-old Gedore 1/2" drive set. Chris caught his plane home. It later occurred to me that he could have picked up my socket by mistake, as some of his were Gedore too.

Well yesterday (Wednesday) when I dropped in to see Andreas, he presented me with my socket! Chris had found it, worked out where it belonged, and sent it with his in-laws who are over here this week! Excellent! :D

you got nice cars, great guitars, and a british accent.

you have accomplished my dream.

That made me grin. Also, the mental picture of Norm jigging  and the cat just had kittens. 4 of them.

Why congratulate me? I didn't do anything! For starters, we've only had this cat 5 weeks...

Indeed. Do you want a kitten?

I'd have you in my foxhole, Ash. Any damned day, mate. The women of Ireland, here's to them all, especially the mothers who made the break-through.

Irish mothers! Trish's Mum didn't like me (as I am a British Imperialist running dog and lackey of Margaret Thatcher). Trish was about 6 stone but had massive boobs. She did not fail to mention, when questioned about said boobs "For fuck's sake Andrew, I'm an Irish Catholic, youre meant to keep me barefoot and pregnant. I've got big tits to feed our 8 children"

She was a nutcase.

there are some basic/small/light mobiles.

This is my back-up phone. It's really light (80 grams) and only cost 25 Euros. You can listen to radio or music on it (sticking a micro SD card in), and it can take two sims so that you don't have to mess about with changing them when travelling. Sorry about the pic size- couldn't find many on the google images.

If you fancy something really really basic, you have to pay more for it!!product_snow.jpg. 69 Euros.

Quite like the look of that and very much like the price - where did you get that? As you price it in € then Ireland perhaps? ZTE don't seem to have much in the way of sales going on in the UK at thee moment. The "Blade" looks good but probably pricey.

I could do with something to replace my HTC ancient Blackberry clone, free from BT.

My wife could do with that big button Motorola - she's legally blind and has great difficulty with most phones and even her laptop. I did buy her a Motorola with a large display but she couldn't get to grips with it.

My brother's registered blind, Myglaren, and has some sort of device that allows his mobile (iPhone) to 'talk' to him, do you want me to ask him how/where he got the application 'thing' to make this work? He's had similar things on other mobile 'phones too, as well as one for his home computer I think.

That's most kind of you Billy, thankyou and yes please.

She has had some aids offered through a local blind charity/organisation but the prices were somewhat staggering and she wouldn't go for them.

I have a screen reader for her laptop but she struggles with that and peers at the screen through a magnifier instead.

She does the same with her phone but a text-to-speech aid would certainly be an advantage although she is somewhat technologically challenged and may have difficulty operating anything advanced.

Sitting here in the rain thought I would have a look for jobs online (this time last year it was a Hotel!) and came across a business teaching position in Cayman Islands. So I have applied! May never come to anything but what better way to spend a wet friday in old Blighty...

I have at least one of these knocking about somewhere, which 'ran when parked'... PM me if of any interest.

I don't see the point of buying a new phone when a year old second hand one on ebay will be less than 1/4 of the price. I think I've noticed a little goldmine in the market here that nobody else has.

I got it in Greece, I don't think it officially made it to the UK, but I'd be surprised if you couldn't order it somewhere on t' internetz.

The 480 went to its new home today.

Pretty happy that sporty-shite b[r]ought it from me, and that the transaction was as hassle free as it could have been. He texted back after getting home and reported that the car had behaved itself. So, to summarise:

1. 480 sold.

2. No dealings with mong central (VOC forum)

3. Bought by fellow shiter

4. Met ur-sporty-shite

Also, the 305 is now running. Sort of.

Team Ozzy! I had Paranoid as my ringtone, and when the phone rang in Sainsbury's a woman asked me to Bluetooth it to her phone. She was very respectable looking, you'd never have thought she was a metalhead.
