One last bit of riot chat - this posted on Something Awful amused me:

Some idiot set up a Plymouth Riot facebook group today, planning to meet in the city centre at 1am. 20 attendees clicked that they were attending, including 'Devon and Cornwall Police' (lol).

Billy, this isn't ARRSE :D . She's a good kid, maybe shouldn't call her that she's 25 now, and a English teacher. My folks neighbours fostered her when she was 13, after having being left for dead by her biological parents when they thought she had a "tummy ache".. They went on the drink and left the kid. She had kidney failure and almost died. The girl had the wit to dial 999 and Larne Police booted the door in and a cop who I know carried her to the ambulance. Jamie (the cop) thought she was already dead. She was freezing and literally starving to death.

If I happen to be round my folks house early in the day and see her going to work of a morning, she always says "Hi". An example of good people from bad rubbish. Nature/Nurture.

I've been driving around in a car that I've been too busy to put on the MID. I must've driven past dozens of police vehicles and not been stopped once. I think in this case they really do have something better to do.

On the subject of our boys in blue, today I say a convoy of riot equipped American Ford F150 vans being blue lighted by Met Police Mercedes Sprinters towards the northbound Blackwall Tunnel. Christ only knows where they managed to get them from at such short notice. I would of thought a few PSNI Landys would of been easier to acquire at 48hrs notice, maybe they didn't want to associate our capital city with Belfast?

Mr Claypole, can I borrow your car ramps sometime in the weekend/early next week? My attempts at locating and bagging a semi-local pair on ebay have been rather unsuccessful.

Rang my insurance company yesterday to enquire as to how much extra it would be to add a Land Rover Discovery to my existing multi-car policy... £40.14 !!!

So now I'm looking for a nice (i.e. not terminally rotten) 200 TDi

Worryingly, I find myself close to agreeing with Norm. It is the moral decline of ALL classes that seems to be pushing us towards the end. Scummy types smash windows and loot, middle classes hurtle along hard shoulders because they consider themselves more important than everyone else in the queue, MPs fiddle their expenses. Pains me to say it as an anti-religion person, but maybe we need to bring back the brimstone and hellfire? Not that the priests who preach it are necessarily squeaky clean...

I wish more people would pay attention to the Humanist lobby. You don't have to be religious to live within a decent moral code.

Exactly but the people who really need it are the ones who ignore it. People should be able to exercise judgement and restraint and take personal responsibility for their lives and the way that they interact with others but as you mention perhaps the threat of hell-fire is required to keep them inline instead.

Too many see how others manage to slip the reigns and come out of it unscathed and think that they may as well do so too.

I have to also agree that Norm has a lot of points in his favour.

I wish they'd have an American committee for the 'defense' of English spelling.

This is what happens when you replace plod on th street/in a 24v Senator with cameras and advertise the fact you don't want to send people to the slammer. People have always been dicks but now they've cottond to the fact they can get away with it.

No one is squeaky clean and I don't actually think it would be good thing if priests were squeaky clean!! You only read about the bad things a few have done, and it shouldn't be covered up and I think a lot of damage has been done to the church (mainly the Catholic church) by offences that have been brushed under carpet, but you never read about the good things. I know many priests and they are all good people who do incredible good in their local societies (not just within the confines of the church) whether for religious people or secular.
