On the subject of aeroshite, I would love one of these:

Mine would have patches of primer all over it though, and an odd coloured wing, and mismatched seats inside. And the air tank for the starter would leak so I'd have to pump it up with a 12v mini compressor before I could go anywhere. 8)

Jeez, thats some Aeroshite right there. I'd only get on that if I was Harrison Ford and I was escaping from Lao Che's henchmen!

Love old planes - had a great couple of domestic flights in Indonesia in 2007 - 727 on the way out and a DC-9 on the way back - both planes older than me. I need to wangle some work in Iran so I can ride the 707's they still fly. But for my own plane, it'll be similar to the way I like my cars - big spacious and useful.

Yup correct id, but unfortunately the Chinese airlines have brand spanking new Boeings and Airbuses now. I think there is a token Tup 214 but I've not seen it around yet.The last XinJiang airlines IL96 has been chopped up now and all the old Yun-7 turbo-props are now decommissioned after the Shanghai crash in 2007. The oldest plane you'll get in now will be a 737-300 for a MD80 from the mid-80's. The Govt still cruise about in Tup 134's and 154's, but even they are rarely used. When I first went to China, I was frequently in TU154's and Antonovs. Most crashed and the authorities eventually decided to replace entire fleets - Sichuan airlines had the remaining 8 of the 12 TU-154's replaced with A320's overnight after 4 Tups crashed in as many weeks.Iran and mid-Africa seem to collect, hoard and operate the aeroshite.

Tupolev built loads of TU-154's for the Eastern Bloc countries. They were built to operate on poor runways which I think was Soviet for "we ken lend marny marny troops in field yes" (apologies for comedy Russian meerkat style prose). China are building their own airliners now, give it 20 years or so and they will be a very viable alternative to Airbus and Boeing considering they will probably do it for half the price. I'm desperate to go on a 380. Friends of mine from Rural NZ (basically hadnt left their town since birth) flew over on a 380 and I was "Oooh ooh what was it like, wow it must have been AMAZING" and they just said "yeah, it was alright, bit cramped though". But considering they had nothing to compare it to they were useless judges. And I agree about flying on a 707 but ideally it would be a BOAC flight. You should check out some of the features and menus for the Asia flights from back in the sixties, it was like the Ritz Carlton in the sky!Dont half fancy watching Airport 75 now!

Removing the plastic steering wheel centres on company Transits and shoving a note in saying 'if you've bought this you've been well done over, I've clocked it you mug' before they went to the auctions.

Flew an Emirates A380 last week Dubai-Sydney (that's 15 hours non-stop) - can't say I rated it particularly. The hype about the bigger window area is just that - sure, the inner windows are bigger, but it's irrelevant since the exterior ones are the same size as in any other long-haul widebody. I was also sat right on the wing which is mahoosive so you get to see even less than on a normal jumbo. This, however, is minor. Much more annoyingly, it conflicted with my usual approach to sleeping on long-haul flights. Generally, if I have a window seat, I'll rest my head against the cabin wall, and pin the cushion in-between. This approach failed to work on the A380 because you seemingly sit a fraction further away from the cabin wall than on any other widebody, or possibly this is just because of the sheer size of the thing and the increased curvature of the fuselage making itself felt. Whatever - point was, whenever I tried my trick technique, the pillow just slid down the side no matter how hard I tried to keep it there. Useless. It's also a seriously ugly munter.

Yeah I agree, it aint pretty. The Boeing Dreamliner looks a fine aircraft but composite delamination is something that worries me a tad!For aesthetics I still think the VC10 takes some beating. Once again anoher mighty British creation which didnt sell as despite the smoothness of the lines and hushed cabin, it arrived just when the world was turning to widebodies like the 707 and economically it couldnt compete. Tough too as it could handle weather which would have torn the engines of podded engine aircraft. Truly magnificent.I like De Havilland Comets as well, I think having the engines incorporated in the wings is a beautiful bit of design

That VC-10 photo is from the air show it was first shown. Christ we actually used to MAKE planes in the UK..

Posted

We USED to make a lot of stuff here......now it is all shipped here from China at a massive cost to the environment - just crazy.

Posted

Do you ship planes around the world? Seems daft :)I'm sure if we were willing to make things as cheap as those far-eastern folk then it'd all come back home. Personally I can't live on £17 a week, so it won't. Sad but true.

We still make bits of planes, including the worlds biggest wings which then get transported to France...

Indeed and the 'flying whale' which transports them flies over us. I've seen it from about 200 yards away once at Airbus when it landed. It didn't look that big until I saw the cockpit windows and realised it was HUGE.They were transporting them by barge from Moston docks but I'm not sure if they still do.

This 'wanted' message just found on my local Freegle (Freecycle) made me rofl a lot...

'Hi Folks.

Am looking for a viable VW campervan, original or transporter, to all me to lovingly restore to it's former glory, and to use it to travel the UK, drawing and writing.

Big ask I know, but is there someone willing to give up a half-completed task, or know someone who might?? Bodywork and engine need to be viable.

Everything else I can freegle..... .
