Pillock Posted June 16, 2018 Posted June 16, 2018 I quite liked mine, value for money was high but it literally dissolved whilst you watched. It went from a fairly decent MOT pass one year to "Advisory: bring a broom when you collect it" the next. I just figure that the prices on anything non-VR6 are super low and the 2.0 8v are still 115bhp so pokey enough. Laseraligningfoofooflanges and Cavcraft 2

dome Posted June 16, 2018 Posted June 16, 2018 Please please please weigh the fucker in. I hate these with a passion, this was the start of VW concentrating on marketing over actually building a decent car. It's not a GTi by any stretch of the imagination I had to drive one from Leeds to Glasgow about 10 years ago and I've still not got over it. ProgRocker, Supernaut, catsinthewelder and 2 others 5
Dick Cheeseburger Posted June 16, 2018 Posted June 16, 2018 I've had a couple of mk3s of the VR6 variety. The six pot engines are fantastic, but the grot and obesity lets the mk3 down. Dragon green is a decent colour though. Cavcraft 1
Matty Posted June 16, 2018 Posted June 16, 2018 Still got an 8v. Compared to moderns it's ace. Immediate brittle response 115 is enough makes a nice noise and handles well after coilovers spartacus and Cavcraft 2
Matty Posted June 16, 2018 Posted June 16, 2018 Still gets my goat as it goes. People say they're slow and lardy bit how many people can really tell half a second diferance to 60??!! Plus a set of Jom coilovers is cheaper than an OEM suspension refresh then they handle near enough like a MK2. Is there really any need to spend at least 2 grand more to really feel part of the scene spartacus, Cavcraft and D Spares & Tyres 3
spartacus Posted June 17, 2018 Posted June 17, 2018 It's amazing how opinion is so divided on such a mainstream car that was originally designed for 'Everyman'.I'm with Matty, mine still puts a smile on my face every time I drive it. Cavcraft 1
timolloyd Posted June 17, 2018 Posted June 17, 2018 A bit like 70s BL shite, I think there's an argument that very few people can remember or have ever driven a decent or well sorted one. Like most consumable cars they weren't cared for by 2nd or 3rd owners, so a lot of popular views are based on drives of ragged, shagged and tired examples. Cavcraft and spartacus 2
Cavcraft Posted June 17, 2018 Author Posted June 17, 2018 It'd only had one owner until Jan this year, it transpires. Someone suggested people like the engines out of these for camper vans, incidentally. Currently divided as to how long I'm keeping this, probably go in the GoG but not entirely sure just yet.
spartacus Posted June 17, 2018 Posted June 17, 2018 Yeah, I think Cobblers had one of these engines in a camper, or something. It's nice and torquey and seemingly bullet proof but let down by the usual CPS and MAF maladies. Timolloyd is right I think, once the maintenance gets overlooked they're just another shed.Anyhoo, I'll STFU and let you have your thread back Cavcraft! Cavcraft 1
Pillock Posted June 17, 2018 Posted June 17, 2018 Cobblers came with a mate to fetch the one I had in the dying few hours of its MOT so it could donate the engine to a T25. It was one of the first MK3 on a J plate and I'm told more akin to a MK2 electrically so the engines are piss easy to get going. No immobiliser, no diagnostics

Guest Hooli Posted June 17, 2018 Posted June 17, 2018 At least it'll match the grass as it rots away in the pasture of profit!
rantingYoof Posted June 17, 2018 Posted June 17, 2018 There's nothing quite like the torque of an 8v engine. The 2.0 8v lump in the Volvo 480 (110hp) was incredible...you could drive it like a diesel in 3rd gear, and it would spin the front tyres at 40mph at the slightest hint of grease on the road.

sporty-shite Posted June 17, 2018 Posted June 17, 2018 As much as I hated my Mk3 GTi, there's a small part of me that would have another, although I'd want a 16v and I'd probably pineapple it to death.

The Reverend Bluejeans Posted June 17, 2018 Posted June 17, 2018 That's unfortunate. Mark 3 Golfs are much maligned, but not nearly enough. dome and catsinthewelder 2
Sigmund Fraud Posted June 17, 2018 Posted June 17, 2018 Y tho? They're not that bad. Golf III H8RS will H8, M8... I think a lot of hate comes from the fact that the GTi versions didn't live up to the expectations of Golf II valver fanboys. Less power, more weight, softer suspension. The non-sporting versions are actually a nicer drive than the Golf II, and ten times better than the terminally dull, hateful Golf IV. Lacquer Peel 1

purplebargeken Posted June 17, 2018 Posted June 17, 2018 Mk3's are ace. Easy to work on and comfy. I like!!!! Shep Shepherd, cobblers and spartacus 3
Cavcraft Posted June 17, 2018 Author Posted June 17, 2018 Given that Mk2 Golfs are shit, is anyone surprised the Mk3 has the same level of apathy towards them? JohnK and The Reverend Bluejeans 2
Matty Posted June 17, 2018 Posted June 17, 2018 I'm starting to think I'm anti AS!! I currently have a MK3 and MK4 golf and an E46 ( the car that's too shite for autoshite)
Kiltox Posted June 17, 2018 Posted June 17, 2018 I quite like the mk3 - the automatic one I had from sporty-shite then passed to another shiter was ace.
davocano Posted June 17, 2018 Posted June 17, 2018 Mk3s aren't fat; they are VOLUPTUOUS. Cavcraft, dougiefourspeed, Sigmund Fraud and 2 others 5
Sigmund Fraud Posted June 17, 2018 Posted June 17, 2018 Hence BBSW alloys? BBS... big, beautiful shiteheap !
The Reverend Bluejeans Posted June 17, 2018 Posted June 17, 2018 Whoever designed and signed the Golf 3 off went to the Mark 5 Escort school of car design. Why are they crap? They're dog slow. 75 bhp from a 1.8? Or 90 bhp from the good version when a 1.3 Corolla had 85 and was better on fuel. They were a byword for premature corrosion and endless trim rattles. They handle like a double bed, underdamped and wallowy. There were many very good cars around 1991-97. The Rover R8, Peugeot 306, Renault 19, Citroen ZX, Corolla, Mitsubishi Colt, all vastly better than this underdeveloped, poorly made turd. Ghosty, eddyramrod, mercrocker and 4 others 7
Timewaster Posted June 17, 2018 Posted June 17, 2018 I had a 16v mk2 and it was proper quick. Much quicker than the 1.6 205 Git I had before and faster than the Mi16 that I traded the Golf for.(because the Golf fell to bits on a daily basis. The 405 was 100x more reliable!) I had a gf with a 1.4 Golf mk3. My God. - Really slow. The car wasn't particularly quick either. The Reverend Bluejeans, Dick Cheeseburger and Sigmund Fraud 3
