Been worrying about a slight knock from my suspension for a couple of weeks, and planned to get it looked at at the end of the week. Interim solution: turn up the music.

The solution became unviable when the front nearside spring coil broke this afternoon about 3 roads from home. Not sure if related or not, but I guess I'll find out the hard way soon enough.

Rather glad I let the train take the strain when I went to Westest Wales this past weekend...

Just been to see a 2013/13-plate VDL Futura 2. One fleet owner from new, 170k on the clock... and still on it's factory filters. I think we'll be passing on that.

On the subject of coaches, I spent all weekend on Carlisle rail replacement with our 60-plate Bova Futura, 6-speed auto, DAF 9.6-litre 365bhp engine. 1400 miles covered at 12.6mpg, which was fairly reasonable considering it was fully loaded most of the time at the EML is on due to emissions equipment issues. 62mph = 1000rpm.

We've recently acquired a 10-plate Neoplan Tourliner with a 12-speed auto and a 400bhp MAN 10.5-litre engine. Out of interest, I ran the figures. On a 5 day tour with the same driver, half loaded with light luggage on a combined cycle it averaged... 7.2mpg. I don't think it'll stay long.

I do like a Neoplan. Remember mid early to mid 90's a company called Travelguide that ran them to Spain, Estartit etc.

It only bloody works.

Refusing to idle, intermittent rev counter, oil pressure off the gauge, perfect.

Count your lucky stars - there has been many an essex owner wishing they had oil pressure.

Rover 25 diesel is back up and running again.

In a previous episode, it snapped its v-belt, causing me to lose the PAS and brake servo on an NSL road.

GcMAIQW.jpg

A new belt was procured; this was in fact the second one after my car, a non A/C car, was built after MGR standardised the belt size so every L Series 25 used the A/C belt regardless of whether or not magic fridge was fitted or not. In true baffling MGR fashion, the longer belt was cheaper and netted me a £1.50 discount when exchanged.

It was slashing down yesterday so Jozza and I stuffed it in the unit for fettling.

Jozza did most of the fitting because he has slightly better hand / eye co-ordination than me.

I reconnected the MAF for my test drive. Although it looks like toilet I can't see it needing much for a test.

It'll then be up for sale. If anyone wants a lard powered R3 they wouldn't be afraid to leave anywhere, get in touch.

I also stuffed a head unit in the Laguna. Can't recommend the mechless Clarion FZ102E enough, the lighting's close enough to be factory.

I used to like driving Merc Neoplans, not as much as Scania Isisars though.

I have been out this morning in my tractor Land Rover, the exhaust started blowing again at the manifold joint. As it was close to the garage that fitted the manifold I left it with them whilst I went for breakfast, they've tightened it up and it's quiet* again. I then went home and have been soaking the rear bumper mounting bolts and petrol tank mounting bolts on the Bentley. I have found someone fairly local who repairs/rebuilds/remakes petrol tanks so I need to get it off and see what they can do with it. I hope that I can remove the tank without needing to resort to heat or angle grinder otherwise there might be a small* explosion. The bumper needs to come off to be straightened a bit, I know it won't be perfect, but the way it's bent makes it awkward to get the spare wheel door open.

After all that exertion and crawling around on the floor it's time for wine.

I used the autoshite whore Rover 220 properly for the first time today, workplace colleagues were underimpressed but I really love it, very easy to drive over my old 306 which was a bit of a brute. It did get some admiration from the blokes in the factory opposite. Plan is to deal with the surface corrosion to smarten her up a bit so I'll be getting a couple of aerosols mixed in white and grey. It may make an appearance at shitefest if the planets align

Dumped in a pay-and-display opposite the ferry terminal for the night awaiting a tow back to the yard in the morning (before the parking fees kick in)

Had to collect a clients car, started of well...battery stone dead, luckly i brought jump leads, finally got it moving, front brakes crappy, gears like a stick in bucket of plaster, being the powerhouse 1.4 it went ok on straights... hit a incline and it snailed down, handling wise short wheelbase made it bouncy twitchy.

Took the 924 for its MoT today. Was slightly suspicious that the previous MoT was done by a good mate of the then owner (no advisories), but quite pleased this was all that they found today...

Delica pickup, now that's rare.

Late 25s are a GR8 drive IMO, though the gearchange is dire and most were 1.4 insurance speshes with a restricted throttle body (84 BHP vs the 105 the 1.4 could produce).

My 'rust free' MX5 has a rusty (nearly a )hole in the rear of the drivers side sill (cill). I am upset by this as I don't like rust, in fact, I have a pathological hatred of the ferrous stuff! I have been suspicious of this tiny bit ever since I got the car as it was a bit crusty/bubbly/not right in a very small patch. Being the insane bastard I am, I had to go and attack it with a screwdriver. It didn't go right through, but it was a tad touch and go...

Now covered in a gallon of black waxoyl.

So, I will have to get this sorted: I don't want an 'MOT' job ('cos fussy old twat) so I will have to get a bodyshop to do it. Joy is unconfined at this prospect. Oh, and working slightly angled downwards resulted in a pile of last night's din-dins even though I was only at an angle for less than five minutes. I hate being a sickly old, fuss arsed, obsessive twat.

Still, gives the neighbours something else to complain about.

Unhinged dedication is what keeps Autoshite Autoshite. Is the Bentley behaving itself?

So, a man who doesn't like rust buys an MX5 and a Bentley . What's next a KA or a Classic Range Rover ?

Off to Holland tomorrow after an overnight stop in dover tonight for a weekend of PT Cruisering.... hopefully I will be able to avoid Floods and crazy froggies.... was worried about diesel supplies until I realised the Belgium border is only 10 miles from Dunkirk :-D

Certainly unhinged! Yes, the Bentley always behaves itself when it is locked away in the garage not being used... it's when I get the bastard out that the problems start! :)

For years I tried to live on a diet of glass fibre but it made me constipated in the wallet.I did try and get the least rusty MX5 I could find, seems I, once again, failed. :(   The Bentley is an oddity - they galvanised the very bottoms of them and left the rest to chance/the English weather/piss poor quality control! :)

I have so far managed to resist a KA but I did have a classic Rangey, which, surprisingly, wasn't rusty! Well, the chassis was and the bits of the body that were steel obviously were, but the rest was fine, apart from the bubbles.... :)

Mate used to drive an old Irizar for years. Volvo B10M on a private plate but must have been a late 80s early 90s motor.

Think the one I used to have drive was a 98 ish, 7 speed pre-select on a tiny lever mounted to the seat & tri-axle chassis. Drifted quite well on frost when empty lol

Modest Brag.

Most of us settle for either MOTd OR working.

Between work shifts this afternoon I changed the cambelt on the 106 diesel in bang on one hour, from driving in to driving out of the garage.

The book times on the TUD5 seem to be about half that of the XUDs!

So this happened today. I was pulling onto a roundabout and it suddenly died. Managed to push it across the roundabout and onto a petrol station forecourt, checked fuel which was ok. The arrival of my dad and a plug spanner confirmed there was no spark, and probing with a multimeter this evening has confirmed that 12v is no longer reaching the distributor. Further investigation required tomorrow.

At least while I had the distributor off it gave me the opportunity to replace the worn out points, clean up several corroded connections and araldite a big crack in the vacuum advance housing on the side of the dizzy.
