I said i wasn't getting on with that Audi! A friend a work recently bought it of the original owner who's retired from driving, it's a 1.6 L with 64k and full local history from new, It has 11 months mot and other than a couple of rust spots on the sill/wheel arch dogleg bit it's in fantastic condition.

The only fault with it is from the lack of use in recent years it now splutters and cuts out when hot, it's either fuel or dizzy related but I'm not paying much for it so i can afford to replace the parts.

I'll be sacking off the tow bar and GB sticker though.

Why would you get rid of the towbar from such a Powerful Towing Machine?

If i left it on Mrs Trigger would be using it as an excuse to buy that retro caravan that she's been talking about!

Well done Trig! Looking forward to seeing the progress on this.

Go Trig! Awesome stuff, I love Mk2 Astras, I used to have the CSMA Civil Servant motoring mag article from when they launched the Mk2. Coloured all the black and white pictures in with felt tips, cos I was about 6 or summat.

Ma had a GL - H211XRC, electric windows and aerial - luxury! White wheeltrims too but scrotes nicked them. And posh velour trim too.

Later I had a GTE floppytop that I bought blind on ebay. It was fucked. Stolen/recovered with knackered ignition and door locks, parked up in long grass so you can imagine the state of the sills. I just used to sit in it and stare at the digital dash as as reminder to never ebay whilst drunk again.

That looks blinding though.

I've always loved the wheeltrims on these, top purchase.

Well, that Astra was unexpected.  Lovely number plate font, been a while since I've seen a set of those.

According to Ukvehicle.com;

"JAH792V is a Blue/grey 1979 Carlton Commando Rv with a numberplate first registered in Norwich in 1979. This Unknown was first used on the road on Wednesday 19th September 1979."

I had to look Carlton Commando up ..... I don't think it would be a good idea to drive one of those with no gruds on...

+1 for the Mk 2 Astra love!

I had a white one from new - G667PFK (the neighbour of the beast) till I donked the valves with cam belt roulette and it moved on to someone who cared much better for it. Earlier, I got nicked doing over a ton on the M11 in it and had to plead to keep my licence in front of the magistrates in Saffron Waldon.

Happy days!

I continue to fall in and out of love with my Mercedes 190e.

Total outlay this year is pushing £1000 with:

  • Head Gasket Replacement (Head skimmed, valves refaced etc)
  • Other Gaskets Done at the same time
  • New Water Pump
  • New Alternator
  • Thermostat
  • Battery
  • New Breather Pipes
  • Service

I still need to get a new heater for the car as it's blocked (joy of fucking joys) and now the steering is noticeably heavier turning left than turning right.  All internet wisdom points to a replacement steering rack being required.

So, to be completely happy with the car I'm looking at

  • New Rack (fnar fnar)
  • Gearbox rebuild (noisy bearings in 2nd and 3rd)
  • Diff needs attention (standard whine)
  • Heating

It's true what they say - sometimes you can't afford to buy a cheap one.

Still, I do love it.  And we FINALLY hit a landmark yesterday...

I'm doing this AS thing all wrong.

I have this problem too, instead of putting up with faults and binning it when it breaks, I have to fix them.

To be fair, I don't think the true Autoshite principle is to bin a car when it breaks at all. Surely this place has always been about spending far more than an utter shitbucket is worth just because we like cars that most of society does not? There's always suitable hero worship when folk ignore economics/go to great personal lengths to save an older shitter, and THAT is what this place is about.

Even so I wish I could train myself to be a bit more financially astute. The last car I bought for £150 with along MOT, then had it serviced and breather trap replaced! Now I have bought it new special bright headlight bulbs, I will hardy do any miles with it!

Meh, it's just money, right?  As long as there's enough to pay for the things that need paying what does it matter what you do with the rest?  You can either spend it all on fags, booze and takeaways or on old cars.  Doesn't really matter as long as you enjoy the thing you're throwing the money at and, arguably, throwing money at a car so you can enjoy it is considerably better for your health than a 40-a-day Benson & Hedges/binge-drinking on a weekend/artery-clogging pizza to the same value.  With that in mind you probably are being financially astute; every penny wasted* on your cars is a penny saved in health care further down the line.

When I owned my 90 V8, I definitely avoided any sums! The low fuel warning light came on at half a tank...

I had a V8 LtWt with the wrong sender unit....

1/3 was full & it dropped to full as it run out, this happened rather quickly as it never bettered 14mpg.

Oh yeah, look at me buying a Vauxhall!

Nice one. Apparently a 1.6 too, must be unusual in the 'L' spec?

Will it be at Shotley next week? Would be interesting to compare it with the Sunny (also an odd combination of fairly low trim level and bigger engine).

Doubt I'll be bringing the 1200 down. It's still not running right, despite the garage taking the carb to bits on Saturday. Ironic really, when it's the simplest, most basic car I have. The one thing it always did was run well, but I couldn't drive it much due to the clutch, tyres and various other things needing attention. Now they're sorted but I still can't use it.

The garage can have one more go at it, if that doesn't work then I might drag it down to Datman's.

Managed to make a hash of changing the Lexus wiper blades last night. Passenger side was fine but on the other side it has a pantograph arm and a weird fixing for the blade with an extra bit of plastic. Guess what fell off into the scuttle full of leaves, at dusk....

I'd like to say yes but i doubt it, i collect it Thursday and I'll need to find out why it cuts out when hot (i suspect a knackered coil now) plus i really want to sell the Audi before i swap the insurance all over. I'll see how it goes as it would be interesting to get both ours together.

I just hope I'm doing the right thing buying the Astra now, especially as it's only a L spec but at £450 i couldn't turn it down, i probably should persevere with the Audi really but i feel someone with more enthusiasm could make a better car of it than me.
