I was offered the chance of getting this back , so today I set off to collect it. It was in Uddingston after falling its mot, I booked it in for another test back home and planned on just driving it back. I'm not sitting outside a scrapyard in Bellshill with a burst coolant hose waiting on the aa...

Just about to set off to get my HGV medical, it's a pre booked one so OK to go there legally.  If I fail do I get a free retest within 14 days?

^^^^^^ Only if you don't leave the test centre during that time.

Took delivery of a package marked 'Harzardous' ealier.  That's fuel sorted then.  Weather forecast looks good and confidence in the car is running high so hoping Sunday provides the best day's drag racing yet.

Has anyone got purplebargeken's mobile number?

If anyone has, could you drop him a quick text and let him know I've sent him a link via pm to a mowtah he may be interested in.

It's a Saab 900 2.3 auto with 12 months test, going for £150.

To paraphrase the well-known phrase : friends don't let Ken buy more cars !

Are you talking about that dangerous-looking slingshot thing ? If so, can we have MOAR PICS and a writeup, please ?

Since retiring in 2008, my annual mileage has reduced from about 24K to 18K, spread between two cars.  I had had a period of frequent local trips of about 35 miles, so yesterday's jaunt to Malvern, Stow on the Wold, Little Rissington (where I lived in 1954, aged 5ish), Great Rissington (first school), Bourton on the Water (it was packed with tourists), back to pick up my daughter via Cheltenham, M5/M50, (who was visiting a friend) in Malvern, Worcester in the rush hour, daughter home in Leicestershire then back home in Northants.....was most enjoyable.  Beautiful weather, beautiful scenery and no examples of lousy driving to moan about.  My recently MOT'd Pug 205 automatic ran faultlessly and its trip meter recorded almost exactly 300 miles for the day.  Also, no back ache or any other aches.  Remarkable.   Today I rewarded the 205 for its efforts by giving it an oil and filter change.  This 45 minutes job took 2 hours because the sump plug and the filter had been tightened by someone who ate only spinach (Popeye reference).  .....also filled the tank again.  It barely manages 300 miles on a tankful but I don't mind 'cos I like it.

Yea but a tank must only cost £40 so it's not so bad really

My old XM would swallow £100+ in pez and piss it away in maybe 400 miles...

I was looking forward to another day off of Fiat fiddling when the phone rang this morning, you haven't worked your hours this week can you come in?

I taxed the Selecta over breakfast, jumped in it and turned the key to nothing.  Battery has died.  This wasn't a problem as the Micetro was pressed into service.  Worked an extra hour and had a message from the garage that the Uno was ready.  Now it was a problem as the only car ready to present at the garage was stuck in behind the non starting selecta.  Luckily a short charge gave it enough juice to start and move it.

The some skilful reversing got all cars out of the way to release the white clx.  The MOT bloke wasn't happy to see another car, I reassured him that he could take a fortnight to test it I just didn't want to have to walk there in the rain.

The uno had a completely seized caliper which they had replaced, glad I didn't tackle it myself as brake bleeding is something I avoid like the plague.  Now that's fixed I can drive it a little more spiritedly.  It's a great car, higher driving position in comparison to Pandas, hardly any body roll on corners and just as nippy.  I'm liking the long gears on the four speed box and the choke works properly and has a good range of adjustment.  Needs a new wiper, the single 18" one is pants though I love the way it flicks water at passing pedestrians with it's manic intermittent wipe.

More panda shuffling, Selecta had to be jump started from the Micetro, I then parked it just under the carport so I could change the battery.  I'm using the one that came off the mk3 4x4 which was renewed when it showed an electric assist steering wheel fault (it didn't fix the fault though).  I'll renew the selecta's battery when somewhere has an offer on Bosch ones.

Now some exciting news!  I haz bought a Brava/o!

$_1.JPG

Just for the 1242cc 16v engine which will be going into the orange 4x4!  Hah no more shit carbs in that one!

It was delivered (for £20) to Freddy who restored the Colour for me.  He's not done an engine swap before but he is meticulous in his work and his hourly rate is low and no VAT!

It'll be a couple of weeks before he can start work on the conversion but the cars interior is clean (I'll have the seats out for another panda) and the alloys look pretty good too I'm told.  Its a cat c as had a front and rear shunt.

Paid about 3 times less than I would've for a similar Punto, only unknown is fly by wire throttle but Freddy is confident he can make it work in the Panda.

Lastly but by no means leastly the Y10 started!!!  Will be giving it a blast tomorrow evening!  Can't wait!

I laughed at the reference to manic wipers.  Our 1.4ie Tipo has the same affliction.  It's a wonder the blades can stay on the arms.

So, this evening, after some years as a mere armchair shiter, I haz finally taken the plunge into Properly Old Car ownership. Not really shite, either in terms of price or (as far as I can tell) condition, but it is 35 years old, smells faintly of engine oil and vomit, and, of course, Is Not a Proper Porsche.

Well bought...that looks fantastic!

Same with mine, and the alfa 155. Actually the intermittent doesn't work, so it's off or full on frantic ness.

I forgot about manic wipers. They'd properly do my head in. Explains why Skattrd's wipers kept flying off the other day in the Tipo.

The scimitar passed its mot today, a clean sheet with no advisories.

I've even managed to make it stop leaking oil (for the moment!)

The intermittent works on ours - sort of.  It quivers, then whacks the blades across and back in an inconsistent but very latin way.  The car needs a bigger dashboard to cower behind.

That was probably my fault, I vaguely remember the right hand one clacking the A pillar just before we arrived at the Jumbuck... Sorry!

Bah.

It could be worse, you could have been at the London Road auctions in Glasgow after a day at Uni and bought a shit Lada Riva for £140 because you couldn't be arsed cycling the 28 miles or so home on an empty stomach, having forgotten that a fish supper was less than £3 & that they took bikes on the train and the station was 4 miles away!

The Fusion has its new bumper on thanks to local garage chap, and looks a whole lot better, especially after a £5 trip through the local handwash.

Two interesting things he spotted - still have a water leak despite thermostat housing and water pump being done in last 18 months   (to be fair I have been topping up occasionally).

Also the power steering hoses were disconnected, and I hadn't even noticed (  ) what a noob. Parking is now a doddle  ;-)

What are fusions like? I'm getting tempted by facelift ones if the 214 has a catastrophic MOT fail at the end of the month.

My day, so far, has been pretty vintage. I've been hurtling around in the Nippa snapping stuff like this.

I love the VSCC folk. Certainly not the sort to own garage queens, or just trailer their cars to shows. Some of the support cars are fun too. 760 turbo diesel for instance.

This lass was driving a Star, built in Wolverhampton. She didn't seem very confident of its braking ability.

I wrote a blog for petrolblog here.... http://petrolblog.com/2015/09/in-defence-of-the-ford-fusion/

In summary, perfect 7 mile journey car - easy to hop in and out, keeps up with the traffic, parts obv cheapish. Not ideal for motorway runs - as it is too bloody noisy for me, and also other larger cars tend to pick on it cos giffer car ain't it?

I've read about one guy that added extra sound proofing with some success.

Might have a sheddy Fusion coming my way soon - 1.4 dizzler

must be slow - 68 bhp!
