I tried selling the 2CV, but the 2CV people won't let me do it, and have now suggested a crowdfunding scheme to get her back on the road. One pal has offered me £25 if he can take my wife out for fish and chips. It's the Autoshite version of Indecent Proposal.

so he pays you so he can kill your wife and get fish n chips?

nowt weirder than folk;)

Well, it seems the Crowdfund thing is happening. It's like a ROFFLE but you don't have the stress of wondering how you're going to collect a hopeless old crock from many miles away. Elly the 2CV could make Shitefest, and contributors will be welcome to a drive (what am I saying...)

Driving through Essendine yesterday there were lots of people gathering around the railway bridge, so we stopped and had a look. Sadly my photographic skills failed to capture the moment but it was good to see.

On to Kettering where I ventured into the town centre. Outside the Newlands centre is an ancient public ashtray where gentlemen were industriously searching through the nub ends and teasing out the baccy. What a fucking desperate place.

Today I pulled the cover off my mk1 fiesta ,It's been sat unused in my workshop since 2012.... The only battery i had was off a wheelchair but 12 v is 12v innit..gelcell or lead acid...

The engine started in 15 seconds  , no popping , misfire or anything !!!! I'm going to get it road legal and sell it for millions of Old Ford pounds  I think !

Now there's one of this year's want list. I don't have Old Ford Pounds though.

Bollocks. After you've just had all that bodywork done too. Is there much damage?

Luckily not much, because the saph is lowered and a wagon r is quite high the bottom half of her rear bumper contacted the top of the saphs front bumper, her bumper pushed in and scraped the saphs, luckily no cracks, it took me months to find the bumper that's on there, i will need to get a pair of the rubber mounts that go into the end of the chassis legs as well, the bumper feels loose on them now, they did their job well

I gave her the option of going outside of insurance if she wanted, which she chose so I'll get my mate to paint it at mates rates and pass the saving on, if it was an old snotter I would have just wished her a good day and sent her on her way

There's a 2CV run on Sunday. In theory, I can't tax the Dyane until Tuesday, but then I saw something about being able to buy tax if two working days from the end of the month. So, will I be able to buy tax tomorrow? Would be bloody ace if I could.

I believe so, but it won't be valid until the first of March. It's not like the old days when you got a valid disc a few days early.

...Im 'collection'eering' tomorrow, after electronically online agreeing to purchase a cheap shitter, with some 'aesthetic challenges , there, an hour ago, which is about 90- 100 miles away; n tonight I have bribed my brother with beer to come along n assist- 'during the rugby', is the agreed consensus, to fetch it, to maximise the possibility of a successful outcome...

im holding back details of make/model/degree of 'feck'dness of said vehicular conveyance to avoid any Irish sitterz 'shezzumpting' me out os said shit heap with a better offer...

...anyways, feels good to 'lock/load n fire' on a cheap motor - been literally ages since I bought any old heaps - heres hoping those feelings last, at least till we're home, tomorrow evening, but for now Im havin a larger to celebrate!!

Surely if you go on a DD you can just tax it whenever? Yeah, you'll be paying from 1st Feb - but they probably won't take any payments for 5 weeks, they seem to postpone the first payment if it's too close to the end of the month and just take a bit more from the month after.

Ah, I like your thinking.

Since parting with the Victor, I've been thinking a lot about sorting out the current fleet and while there will always be other cars I want to buy, the four cars I currently own need to come first. The Somerset has been my daily for a while now, that is pretty well sorted but all the others need work to some degree or other. The Maestro is supposed to be my 'modern' daily, but I simply haven't been using it recently as the heater is bypassed and the autochoke is rubbish from cold. It always starts easily but then splutters and holds back when you try to move off.

As much as I don't like admitting defeat, yesterday I did and dropped the Maestro off at a local one-man-band garage near Canterbury for the chap to have a look at resealing the heater pipes and adjusting/diagnosing the autochoke problem. To put this into perspective, it's the first time it's been in a garage in my ownership for anything more than an MoT. Fortunately, he comes highly recommended by a classic car owning friend of mine and has several classics/hotrods of his own, and was replacing the sill on a Sixties Merc when I went in. I am tempted to get him to repair the bit of crunchy sill flange on the passenger side rear, but I'll see how he gets on with the other bits. At least he was able to fit the car in straight away.

I then started thinking about the other bits the car needs. It's a Maestro, so although it's better than most the doors are getting crusty (especially the NS/R) and most of the windows are peppered with sparks as I stupidly didn't cover them while repairing the sills and arches :( The exhaust knocks when someone's sat in the back, and some bits of interior trim are broken/damaged. Oh, and it needs a radio and the new ariel cable running down the screen pillar in some way (which is apparently impossible). Both metal bumpers are rusty and need replacing. I did attempt to repair the rotten rear door, but got some distortion from the welding and when I painted it I used Halfords aerosols, so it's now the wrong shade of beige. When I was standing outside the garage yesterday chatting to Adrian about cars, it looked embarrassingly awful.

I've stuck an offer in on a new front bumper on eBay, so we'll see how that goes. In the meantime, someone has a set of brand new doors for sale. They are £400, which seems steep, but they are seriously rare. I would need glass for all four, and it's more than I paid for the whole car though! So I'm still undecided about those. He's also got a front panel for £75, which would replace my accident-damaged one. Trouble is, I bought a secondhand door on ebay, and not only did it have the wrong glass, but it was crustier than I thought and all secondhand panels are rotten to some extent as the rust starts in the join between the door and skin. Such a dilemma. I'm trying to save money to move out this year, but I did promise myself I'd put some money into sorting out my other cars...

I've had my Capri and Granada out from under cover, first time since about October.

Both started up easily and ran perfectly. Didn't expect anything less!

I've been giving the Capri a bit of a look over today too, it's getting a bit grotty in a few places and the paint isn't good either. I've thought about it a few times over the last few years, but I think this year is the time to do something with it.

Over the last few years I've not gone any further than routine maintenance and the odd bit of welding as needed. However, now I've found a good classic car specialist maybe now is the right time to stump up the cash and get the car back into original condition (and colour) before it starts deteriorating further, which would make any repairs or restoration more costly.

It's going to cost a lot (I'd expect in the region of what I payed getting the Mercury sorted) but to me the car is well worth it.

Should I go for it though? I've already spent a lot on the Mercury this year!

Finally managed to get the Fiesta NCT'd (Irish MOT) yesterday. Turned up for the retest after spending €350 on welding only to be told it still had 2 holes that needed fixing (my fault as I forgot the fail sheet when I turned up at the welders  :-( ) So I flew into work, booked the day off, bombed it to the garage and got the remaining 2 holes welded, hopped on the motorway and was then told at the test centre that I'd have to wait 2 hours (until 9pm) to get it re-re-tested. Finally got it done at about 9:15pm. Overall I've spent €607 on getting it through the NCT, If it remains mechanically straight then that means about €11 a week until its in for the test again this time next year - which aint too bad

The sills and floor where actually in a fairly poor state, 6 or 7 holes all of which were outright test failures and needed addressing. Shame the bodies on these MK5 Fiesta's rot so well as mechanically they're very straight.

Go for it if you've got the cash. If you leave it till next year that's a year less with it sorted.

I'm going to give the place a ring on Monday I think. I'll get it booked in for a pre resto inspection, which was thier suggestion when I went to pick up the Mercury and got talking to them about the Capri.

I have a really good idea what the car will need doing to it, but they might (and probably will) find more once they cast thier eye over it.

I know it needs a full respray, front wings (got a pair of brand new Ford ones), repairs to front floors, front of the sills and lower A post, windscreen surround area, and various small rusty bits around the car.

I've done loads to it myself over the years I've had it but I think it really wants stripping well down and doing properly this time around. Something I just can't do on the drive at home!

On the up side, it's a good car mechanically, very solid and unwelded chassis, it's perfect around spring hangers etc. the front strut tops are original (still have chassis number stamped around it) so I'm confident it's worth doing.

It's just never nice knowing that it'll be another big bill!

And for those living in the land of ridiculously cheap chod, that's still cheaper than the vehicle registration tax on an import in quite a chunk of cases. If you want autoshite here, you have to pay for it.

Rescued midnite's Shalaxy from somewhere so far beyond that London the air smelt fresh, people looked happy and drivers were courteous. I was seriously impressed by the whole thing - it ate up miles and the engine seemed barely less potent than the same one in something weighing half a ton less. Miles less tiring being able to see so much more of the road ahead - the faster you go, the more noticeable this is. After 600 miles my head was still clear and fresh.

Last time I drove that sort of distance in something so high up was in a late 80s RangeRover, which tended to make up for the visibility thing by having steering like a ship's rudder and acceleration above 80 on a par with a Renault 9.

Great photo. The Hawkins Motors top he's wearing is my local Pugrot dealership, which for years had the slogan,

'Such nice people to deal with'. Proper misnomer, especially when hearing stories from a mate who worked for them for years. Wonder what the story behind the photo was?
