dollywobbler Posted October 8, 2015 Posted October 8, 2015 Yesterday, I fired up the Dyane for the first time since before our hols and drove it 60 miles to Hereford. At high speed. Fun. Then I drove a 2CV from Hereford to Aberystwyth, then back to Hereford. I then jumped back into the Dyane and drove towards Leominster to visit a friend who does panel beating - you know, Ferraris and Massers and the like. Serious skills. He let me try my hand on a bit of scrap ally. I was mostly terrified of crushing my fingers. Then drove home. I reckon I was getting on for 300 aircooled miles yesterday, but the Dyane has a serious case of TEH FUMES. I really do need to rip the cylinder heads off and see if I can get a better seal, fix some exhaust leaks and sort out the heater tubes. Asimo and xtriple 2
Coprolalia Posted October 8, 2015 Posted October 8, 2015 Having a got round to it morning before twilight shift. Plugged VCDS lite and my OBD reader into the Stealth Skudder. Only fault code for an intermittent intake camshaft position.Could be a dodgy tensioner.Could relate to when (as documented in the service history) National autocentres changed the cambelt and put the new one on two teeth out. LOL! Faults cleared, no further faults. I chalk that up as a win. xtriple 1
richardmorris Posted October 8, 2015 Posted October 8, 2015 Have you got an old cylinder with the fins cut off as a lapping tool?
cms206 Posted October 8, 2015 Posted October 8, 2015 Vandalism attack in the depot last night... only our side touched, and windows were all smashed from INSIDE the bus. Our neighbours in the yard are pointing fingers at our painter (who they sacked) who works after hours... except he left at 7 with me last night. Leaving only next doors manager in. Oddly enough we've had an email from the HSE with a complaint that buses and coaches are being painted in our shed after hours without adequate ventilation and PPE being used. Police involved now... got two hours to find a 96-seat double decker for this afternoon's schools. brickwall 1
dollywobbler Posted October 8, 2015 Posted October 8, 2015 Have you got an old cylinder with the fins cut off as a lapping tool? Yes. Just need to summon up the motivation to rip the wings off, remove the manifold (again) and pull the heads off. At least I know the manifold nuts won't be a problem! The heater tubes don't fit very well, as I pinched them from the 2CV (it's amazing how little I've spent on the Dyane). I probably should buy new 'spectacle' seals though. I'm pretty sure it's leaking from the originals. Also still need to sort out the clattering CV joints. This car drives remarkably well given how knackered things are...
The Moog Posted October 8, 2015 Posted October 8, 2015 I have got this beauty as a courtesy car today whilst the focus LPG is being looked at Central locking doesn't work, rear suspension squeaks, pas is stiff, high clutch, cel illuminated and and airbag light flashing. Want to guess what the tape is covering? Not a bad barge mind. Hdi seems pretty responsive and very unlike xud power. Lacquer Peel 1
HMC Posted October 8, 2015 Posted October 8, 2015 Wallowed up the m5 in the range rover yesterday to have a meeting in Bristol. Starting issues seem to have gone. Went over the Clifton suspension bridge en route...Any old iron, and a bridge. Went back via Warminster to pick up some transit parts and have clocked just over 300 miles with some fuel left to burn, which as a rough guestimation is slightly to the good side of 20MPG. On a fast stretch I swear I could almost watch the needle edge it's way down! All in all a decent trip although the headlining collapsed round my ears near the end of it! dollywobbler, CGSB, RobT and 7 others 10

dollywobbler Posted October 8, 2015 Posted October 8, 2015 Here's one from the archives. Over ten years ago in fact. I really do treat my car and my wife very badly... Mrs DW is telling me off because she was pushing the 2CV, and I'd got out to take that photo... At least it demonstrated how good the chassis is. Galvanised FTW. If I tried this in the Dyane, it'd probably snap in two... EssDeeWon, LC Torana and HMC 3
Bear Posted October 8, 2015 Posted October 8, 2015 Being able to look under the car is a mixed blessing. The E320's intercooler would appear to be serving double-duty as a sump, and the whole lot is out of alignment with a bent radiator support. Now torn between shoving it on the back burner and definitely sorting the Accord brakes, flogging it and getting a W124 estate, or flogging it, assuming that the Hearse will do any carrying duties needed and getting something else.
cort16 Posted October 8, 2015 Posted October 8, 2015 I did the Nissan factory tour today. Very impressive and it truly boggles my mind the organisation that needs to be in place to build that volume of new cars. 25 hrs to build a qashqai from scratch including 8hrs in the paint shop. holbeck and Bear 2
JohnK Posted October 8, 2015 Posted October 8, 2015 Had some good conversation with the missus today. We have decided to sell the 2011 520 dizzler as we don't particularly need it. This means the Civic dizzler will be staying as her car/cheap runabout. That suits me well and sticks some cash back in the bank for me to spend on old chod. EssDeeWon 1

cort16 Posted October 8, 2015 Posted October 8, 2015 Vulcan bomber? They said that was the last plane to land before they demolished the runway to build the factory.
vulgalour Posted October 8, 2015 Posted October 8, 2015 Mike and I viewed the nicest potential new house I'll have ever lived in today, a fairly modern and quite small two bed detached bungalow with single garage and two-car drive. Quite a downsize from where we are now but without Blake-dog we don't need all this extra empty space around us. I'm anxious about it, I've lived in enough horrible houses and places now to not feel like I deserve to live somewhere really properly nice which is very silly. I mean, this house doesn't need any decorating, the kitchen is nice and while the bathroom is peach it's not offensive. The gardens are small enough to be manageable but big enough to enjoy and I've wanted my own garden for such a long time now. More importantly, Mike noticed that one of the neighbours had a green Mk1 Triumph GT6 on his drive in front of most of a white Triumph Vitesse which also gave him pause about selling his little red Triumph GT6. Of course, if Mike keeps his red GT6 and a neighbour has a green one then I'd have to get a yellow or orange one to complete the set. The whole place has this really pleasant atmosphere to it, far away from schools and places of worship and main roads. I hope we get approved for the tenancy but I don't want to get my hopes up in case they're dashed, the little house just seems too perfect. purplebargeken, Jim Bergerac, anonymous user and 3 others 6
anonymous user Posted October 8, 2015 Posted October 8, 2015 And now you have a partially blind toddler? When I was pre-school age, a very long time ago when the world was in black and white, I often went to work with my father, so from a very early age used to "help" him in the workshop. I was quite inquisitive and paid a lot of attention to what was going on. He was quite concerned one day when he caught me after I had set up the arc welder and was about to have a go on my own. stuboy and LC Torana 2
alf892 Posted October 8, 2015 Posted October 8, 2015 Sudden burst of activity by me tonight........I don't like having to turn to of an evening but Mrs Alf discovered the mot expired on her mobile last week so little choice. Last night I gave it a quick check over and found two front flexi hoses were very buggered. New ones fitted tonight and mot booked for morning. I'm only going to pick the ticket up though..... I've had the car since it was 3 years old and it is now 13 so they were probably the originals
cort16 Posted October 8, 2015 Posted October 8, 2015 An Audi a2 in exactly the spec we want has come up a few miles away. Going to see it tomorrow , fingers crossed its decent . purplebargeken and Rusty_Rocket 2
trigger Posted October 8, 2015 Posted October 8, 2015 I'm looking for advise from the wise, I'll be cleaning under the bonnet of the Dolomite soon but everything is plastered with some kind of rust protection wax, a search on Google says White Sprit is the best stuff for removing it but I've tried that today and it didn't even touch it. The wax is hard and only comes off if I pick at it with a thumb nail, anybody got any experience with how to remove it?. I was wondering if some TFR and my pressure washer would work? To give an idea what its like under the bonnet.
dollywobbler Posted October 8, 2015 Posted October 8, 2015 It seems to work. Why take it off? Shiny engines are for losers people with far more dedication than me. Timewaster, cms206, Eddie Honda and 1 other 4
purplebargeken Posted October 8, 2015 Posted October 8, 2015 Don't worry too much about that stuff, just get it fettled and MOT'd. That will give you the motivation to bring it over to my place and car titivation can take place whilst you gaze upon the green Rover and Dolomite. trigger 1
Lord Sterling Posted October 8, 2015 Posted October 8, 2015 Yay: The Transit Connect at work with the violently rumbling wheel bearing has been repaired. Boo: Rover Sterling has now decided it wants some brake pads, cue lots of squeally noise when braking. Not nice when your travelling through towns/the sticks and some city to and from work. Also, I want my Merc back
trigger Posted October 8, 2015 Posted October 8, 2015 My dad said I should leave it on too but I think it lets it down, I'll give it a pressure washer with some TFR and see how it looks afterwards. It's already has a mot Ken, it just wasn't very leget I think! I can't remember if I said but I've got it home now, the brakes seem to be losing pressure when I have my foot on the pedal even after rebuilding the master cylinder and bleeding the system 3 times, I wonder if the servo has a leak?. I've spent the last few days polishing the paintwork trying to get some kind of life back to it, also fitted the correct rear badge and a new aerial. This my reflection in the bonnet. And I'm currently on the roof. anonymous user, HMC, Rusty_Rocket and 6 others 9
