Need welder, ASAP.

<OnlyMeVoice> Oh but those old Mercedes are built like tanks, they never rust. not like those new ones. Quality disappeared in the '90s, oh yes. You don't wanna buy a W210 or W202, you want a nice W124 you do.

Today, whilst trying to find somewhere to wash/hoover the McSterling, I received a phone call from a chap whos elderly father had recently passed away. Reason being, a couple of years ago I left a note on the old fellas car which is a 1994 M-reg Rover 820i SE, a rare model in itself. I eventually got to speak to the owner, a 90 year old chap, before I went to France.

Anyhow, I was asked if I'd be interested in the car but unfortunately due to my ever revolving cash-poor situation I couldn't take it on, so I said I'd stick a few ads here and there for him and hopefully get it sold to someone who may cherish it as much as his Dad did.

Staying at my mate's house in Aberdeen, fancy new build thing. Not quite my freezing 150 year old hovel that has no concept of insulation in any way shape or form but they apparently sell for something like £200k+ and my house is more like half that and a fair bit bigger.

Anyways it's all designated parking spaces for residents out there, my car announced it's favourite "guest" spot by dripping oil all over the otherwise pristine paving occupied by three year old Beemers and sporty new Golfs... Fairly sure I had the cheapest car there by about £15k and that's my most expensive motor!

I went to Whittlebury village show today with 60+ classic cars.

The car I most wanted to take home with me was this MKI Granada 3.0 in baby blue. It said XL on the boot but I thought they were GL by P reg?

Injections have done something positive, pain levels greatly reduced. I have a bit of a Fentanyl hangover but that is bearable.

Sunshine is nice, roast rib of beef in the oven and today is a good day so far.

OOh Errr, Missus!

NEVER seen before... car broken down in the Tyne Tunnel (North bore).

Back in the day... when it was contra flow that would have been major... now we have TT-2 (South bore) it just meant a bit of jiggly slottage/winker work & flashing then everyone left the hapless lemming to its fate.

The tunnel HAD... I cannot remember seeing them post refurb... some major HEAVY long prong forklift [like a container handler] to shift FTPs. Nothing I saw going on like that today.

I discovered the reason the p6 is pishing out gearbox oil is the gearbox sump gasket , which should hopefully be a cheap fix.

The speed doesn't work and and I still can't find where it goes into the gearbox . Does this mean I just can't find it or it's not there ?

It's running much better although it idles high then you blip the throttle and it idles lower . Spraying around with carb cleaner isn't pointing to any more vacuum leaks so I dunno. Could one of the needles be sticking ?

I've said this before but I'm having some thoughts about just selling up and getting one good * car. I just don't have time to spend on them just now which is making me feel a but guilty about neglecting them. It won't be soon though as they both need work. I've no idea how the like of wuvvum does it.

I broke down in the Tyne Tunnel once - I was returning from the car auctions on the coast road (Tyne Tees?) with an Audi 80CL and the damn thing ran out of fuel half way in. Within about a minute a man in a landrover with a tow pole rescued me to the south side and told me to put "mechanical failure" on the report form because they didn't charge for that but it was £50 for no fuel breakdowns.

I've got boring daily. I'm more likely to keep the p6 because v8. Cortina has been a constant pain in the arse and it's pretty horrible to drive .

Before and after shots of the chip/star crack. Not invisible, but hopefully not going to crack all through.

I found more restoration on the Princess.  I'm grumpy and laughing in despair at this, particularly the rear sill repair styled after the Himalayas.  I hate filler dust so much.

I visited Beaulieu Autojumble today.  No pictures of cars I'm afraid, as I was rather hoping one of my 'shiteist colleagues would have posted some by now, but here's some of the rubbish I was scratching my chin at:

Didn't buy anything, despite everything from pianos to deep-sea diving helmets being on offer.  Cars were mostly the usual overpriced tat you would expect (£1995 for a 96 Corsa), but there was a pretty nice XJ40 for £2.5K.  71K, Jaguar service history, sunroof and extremely inviting cloth interior.

Went to Dismaland this evening. I know bugger all about art but the staff are great. They are all told they have to be miserable and they are good at it. You have to go through security to get in and you mustn't smile or they just mess you around for ages. Ask for a program and they throw it at you. Some interesting shite though.

Put a new CD player/stereo into my mums old Focus. The original 6000cd stopped working so I got another off ebay, that too has now died (no radio but CD player is ok) so I got a new pioneer jobbie, with a new dash radio facia to fill the original hole in the dash for the old Ford radios as it's a lot bigger than aftermarket type ones.

All went together well, and quickly and the car now has radio once again, aswell as CD player, phone connection and iPod connection.

Then jacked it up, wheel off and strip out the plastic wheel arch liner to get access to the leaking washer reservoir bottle. The bottles fine but the pump bottom has split. So new one purchased it was swapped over quickly with a new rubber O ring seal to the bottle. Tried it and nothing! Pulled the electrical plug off and the contacts are all rotten. It worked fine on the old pump! Cleaning it up didn't make any difference so I just cut it off and put new connectors on then heat shrink over them to keep damp out. Works a treat now and no more leaking.

Worst bit of this was on pulling the pump out and getting covered in stagnant stinking old screen wash!

Had a pleasant weekend in Edinburgh. There was a Conkers of Elegance at Wholly Rude Palace. I couldn't afford to go in and saw nothing I really wanted to photograph in the car park outside, except this tatty midget, 'specially for Conrad D.....

Satisfying to see that filler-white crumbly MG Midget Little Person parked next to a big wafty Rolls or Bentley or something.

On the left hand side of the transmission tunnel, under the carpet there is a huge rubber plug.  Under this the angle drive should live.  I usually get both angle drives and the speedo cable rebuilt every few years.  The speedo head itself rarely gives trouble.

Second thing to check is the fluid level inside the dashpots.  You can refill with ATF at a pinch.

(The first is the flame-traps, obviously.)

We went about a million years ago not long after it had opened. The staff were twats then and I don't see it getting any better. It's too near Paris for people to be nice.

Thanks for the info. Where do you get them rebuilt?

This won't help much, being on the opposite side of the planet, but I take mine to a place called "Ringwood Speedos" here in Melbourne, Australia.

Basically, whenever I need a new "inner", I get both angle drives rebuilt at the same time.  Why?  Because if the gears don't spin freely enough, the inner can load up and twist and so get ruined.  The one on the speedo head will wreck the cable when the engine speeds up, and the one at the gearbox end will do likewise when it slows down.

I found a speedometer and instrument repairer that repairs both speedo cables and angle drives in Nottingham.

Website is impressive, and prices seem reasonable given the skilled nature of the work.  I think you could do worse.

Granada news- this old barge hasn't moved much lately. The existing 32/36 DGAV Weber was knackered and some while ago I got hold of a new 32/36 DGV ( with the aim of also ditching the automatic choke) This has taken me ages to get round to sorting but it's starting to come together. Coolant no longer needs to be routed to the carb, so a bit of new hose has simplified the routing over the engine.

Im on the look out for some better tyres and once that's sorted I hope to use it as a daily. These last few months my only wheels have been the ex BT transit. Apart from a dead clutch ( on its way out before I bought it) it's been steady, reliable and fairly good on juice ( 34MPG)
