If you are up for cutting the acrylic to size I know a man with reflective vinyl and letters.  If you can cut the plastic for this could you do the plates that SORN ME wants too?

Are you really in the market for a VW camper?  I'm about to ebay mine,  it's solid underneath but needs a fair bit of bodywork and a bit of engine work.

In other news I've got a good chunk of the engine bay stripped on the Disco, just need to lever off the exhaust manifold and fanny about disconnecting valves before I unbolt the head.  Chap next door popped round to see how much hassle it was as he's stripping an identical one for spares at the weekend.  I've secured the SPAX shocks and will go back with a list of other bits.  Anyone else need owt?

If the front prop is the same as a 300 3.9 auto then I could be interested depending on u/j condition ect

Mine's started clunking/banging when moving from drive to reverse and back again

Finally managed to acquire a paper template of a Rover 75 rear numberplate to try out on the back of the Xantia as the measurements are close to being what I need.  The side tapers irritate me though, I'm not sure I would be any happier with this than a standard plate.

I've had trouble getting a response from any custom plate maker, all of them seem to either ignore contact attempts or tell me they can't provide a plate in the correct shape or size.  I've also had no joy finding the acrylic and reflective yellow vinyl in the size I need for this job unless I buy a massive roll/sheet of both.  Not an option when I only want to build a single rear plate.

Last option is to find someone that can do me a paper template of a Range Rover Sport rear number plate as that's the next nearest standard plate in size and shape to what I want.

Your thoughts on the above are welcome, it's beginning to annoy me that I can't seem to find a solution to this other than fitting a standard plate that looks odd floating in the big black recess.

Dunno if they still do it, But B n Q used to have strips of that stuff as 'splash backs ' for kitchen sinks

The camper is a 1974 model that I bought 8 years ago, patched up and ran for a few years before work got on top of me and it was put to one side. It needs new heat exchangers and an alternator to get it running though the engine is worn and the strip under the windscreen replacing along with a few patches for an MOT.

I was going to Ebay it as I'm not sure what it's worth but if anybody wants to come round for a look they are more than welcome.

Andy, I have no idea if it will fit but have been told that the rusty Disco is very good mechanically, I've not seen it yet though.

Doing a wedding hire. Bridal car is a white 2013 LTI TX4... I don't feel so bad using Volvo 700s now.

You can (just) fit a 19kg Calor gas canister in the boot of a Perodua Nippa. Girth wasn't an issue, but the length/width was a bit tight between the wheelarches. I should have got a picture really. Soz.

Auto gearbox and engine oil change on the Merc, as not 100% sure when last done. Had a good look underneath when it was up on the ramp to find..............no rot, just a bit or surface rust here and there. And no sign of it ever being welded or bodged. Nothing to worry about here after 26 years

Blue T2 up there has a Type 4 engine like what Porsches do* so will be worth a millionty pounds.

* well the lesser spotted 914

In more interesting news, I've just filled up the Porsche like I do every week or so with, on this occasion £57.66 worth of fuel.

Couple of blokes at adjacent pumps in nice looking BMW's were away well before me...

I checked, chap with the 62 reg put in a fivers worth & bloke with the 14 plate a tenner!

Are these people twats?

Do they work at the end of their street?

Do they put in a squirt every day?

Or can they simply not afford to run their neighbour impressing cars?

Just bought this for £350 unseen off to pick it up sun morn.

Watch out the doctors coming.

Excellent! Always much rarer than an r8, with the spoiler and appliance white paint it looks even more similar to the 220. Shitefest transport sorted?!

Decided to do some podging in an attempt to get some of my useless piles sorted and out the door. Specialist is doing the MGF next week and a detailer has promised not to laugh at the paintwork on the MX-3.

Amazon still isn't done but is getting close. I need to collect the van, get the clutch sorted on the Charade and vacate my garage in Bootle.

Following on from my " stupid question amnesty" post. It turned out that the lethal braking on the X1/9 was down to the flexi pipe. being blocked. The caliper moved fine with the bleed nipple open. £20 and 48hours later I had a new pair of pipes with brass washers and retaining clips from Eurosport. A day later and another £40 lighter everything was fitted and the brake system flushed by my local mobile merc. guy.

For bonus points he loved the X1/9 and also has a new customer who has just bought a one owner marina in sand glow beige!

ABout 1/3 of the way through the welding on the wheelarch. Hands are scarred and my welding was a bit iffy as I'm out of practice.

I can never work that one out either. You're brimming a car whose value fluctuates with the price of steel and fuel whilst Range Rover Sports are getting a tenner dribbled in.

In other news, off to ECP this morning to collect caliper slider pins for the Carisma. No doubt it'll actually be a brake drum for a Horsey Horseless.

We only have one petrol station in town and you often have to wait for a pump so people putting a fiver in every other day tend to irritate me.  That said I was up there 4 times one day this week mostly putting piddling amounts in to get the rental fleet up to full tanks ready to go out.

Posted

I've only ever put less than a full tank in when returning hire cars, otherwise I'm going every day. I did manage to run my Astra (56 litre tank) down so low it took 53 litres to fill! Slightly arse-clenching on the motorway when the display gets so arsey it only displays "Refill now" and won't give the range.

Yeah our lass always just puts £25 or so in "cos she doesn't want to waste money on petrol"

I can understand it if you are down to £0 at the end of the month, but she's far from skint and it's only a flipping fiat 500 so £35 would probably fill it. Fuckin maniac!

Posted

The xm took ages to fill from 5 miles left on the range, I never put a full tank in myself but my dad did once, £137!

Granted this was on the m6 but fuck! Can barely squeeze £100 into both the meriva and zx

Vulgalour is amazing. This kind gift has made me very happy. Especially as he has used artistic licence to edit out the rust!

I got a lift with a contractor I was working with to Skye a few years ago, he'd only fill up £10 at a time, this was when petrol was in the 1.30p/l range. We had to stop to top it up about 4 times, luckily finding filling stations where they are sparse. Logical.*

I never fill a car to brim. Was always told that it's not good for mpg carting extra weight and it's just stuck. Vectra does 190 ish mile to 30 quid which is roughly half a tank. Punto does nigh on 100 mile on a tenner too.

Posted

Depends on the car. Perodua and 2CV have such tiny fuel tanks that there's no point not filling them up. XM's tank is so huge that filling it is like carrying another rather large person around, so I tend to half-fill (which still gives about 300 miles of range).

Posted

I just filled the 2cv up- needle hadn't moved and had done 190miles. Just about squeezed 19litres in it. Ready for drive it day tomorrow, as I'm not going out in the fiat as the forecast is terrible.

I try to fill my cars to the brim with vegetable oil and almost always end up spilling about a litre down the side of the car when it overflows. WHY I DO THIS?
