Had a bit of a piss about with the Rover this evening.  Turns out that the starter motor problem appears to be with the cable that runs from the solenoid to the motor, and which I hadn't noticed until I was pissing about trying to take the starter off as it's hidden underneath.  Wiggling it about brought the starter back to life long enough for me to start the car and move it to somewhere a bit more convenient to work on.  I'm still going to replace the starter as a) I've already bought a new one and B) once everything's back together properly it's going to be almost impossible to get to the cable, so it's not a long term solution.  At least the thing is sort of mobile again though.

That's the wheel arch finished. I'm soaking wet and me back aches. The welding went okay and the body work is back together. Phew!

Don't remind me about backache, i took the Landcruiser wheels off yesterday rubbed em down and painted em, you'd think i'd rebuilt the soddin thing from the ground up, still aching now, Gawd nose what state i'll be in when i go for the full rustproofing routine next week weather permitting.

So, the Panhard is eating coils. Had to change it twice just to do the 20 miles between where I dumped it last night and the shed. I opened up the points gap a bit as it was virtually closed up but that didn't make any difference. What the heck is causing it? After a few miles the coil is red hot and the engine cuts out when you coast to a junction or whatever and won't bloody restart. When it does go, it sounds like it's only running on one. Couldn't check the plugs as I'd helpfully left the special plug spanner in the workshop.

Any suggestions welcome before I replace the entire ignition system...

I had another one of my East Coast Retros monthly car meets in Shotley tonight, it wasn't one of the better ones as the weather was so windy, it was proper hacking though the car park, I guess we had around 40 cars which is still impressive.

I only took a couple of photos as my camera is still broke, I had a major hard on for this Fiat 500, it had the Abarth kit fitted when new, it was pushing 75nhp so must go well, I had a sit inside it, they are tiny!

The only other photo I took was this. Pretty lame really.

Barrett - the coil isn't wired up the wrong way round is it?  I had a similar problem with cutting out with the orange Alfasud - coil was too hot to touch and it wouldn't fire back up - turned out that was what was causing it.

Presumably it work on full 12v? A lot of modern coils will be 9v?

Or if it should be at 9v the ballast resistor is buggered so making it run at 12V

Also coils seem happier mounted in engine bay rather than on engine

I had forgotten how nice to drive these old Range Rovers are especially when you are not paying for the petrol. Today I took my friends RR for MOT to the garage that has done leaf spring bushes on my MGB GT that was ready for collection.

Good stuff!

I've made a decision today. I'm going to get rid of all of my cars apart from the 2 E23's and then start again from scratch. I'm feeling the need for a mass clear out.

I think my 2 E23s to keep my interest and then 2 cheap runners, one each for me and the missus. Got lots of adverts to write now!

Bah! Mahmoud told me the Merc was ready, but when I got there, I noticed that there was still a "roaring" noise from the fan. It sounds like when Mercs are overheating and the viscous fan is working to cool the engine, but this was from cold, my car never used to do this so it could be a faulty viscous fan. :(

Happily though, whilst out at work I spotted the mad Purple 1975 Cortina that is seen around the Quinton/Blackheath area. I spoke to the owner briefly and told him about this site. He will really fit right in! It runs on 2.8 Ford Granada engine and sound brilliant!

Vulgylour, they do frequent truck racing at Donington just up the road from me. As you fully expect, it's 100% mentalists drifting eight tonnes of commercial vehicle around for shits and giggles in a cloud of black smoke whilst "leaning" on each other around corners. It makes BTCC look careful. Any sport where you hear the drivers boot the back end out on the corners for maximum crowd enjoyment has to be worth watching.

I'll happily join you if you come down for an event, I go whenever I can. Mallory sometimes hosts and is even better since you mill around in the pits, chatting to drivers between rounds.

Had a trailer on the Escort today....zero functioning tail lights. A quick prod with a multimeter suggests that the 7 pin plug on its towbar has been wired up completely at random.

Posted

They usually are. I have never bought a car with a towbar and not had to completely redo the wiring.

Ls-roaring viscous fans on old cars is often a failed wax clutch where the fan is mounted.

When it fails they can stay locked 'on' so the fan is always blowing fully.

New viscous fan clutch may be worth a shot;)

Pillock:  We have to do that somehow at some point.  We can safely assume bacon will be available with that many truckers in one spot, yes?

Posted

I think bacon is mandatory. Try asking for a salad in the snack bar and see an entire field fall silent....

Also, usually a decent amount of show trucks there. One of the events has a procession at lunchtime of all the shiny trucks that have been brought down, and there's definitely never* any unofficial hanging back to open up a gap, and then nailing your V8 Scania (it's always the Scania drivers...) down the start straight.

So my last post said I was getting rid of everything.

I think I've just committed to my new daily purchase ...

Forgive me A$, for I am sinning. I'm spending 5 days doing about a thousand miles in M-i-L's 60-plate Qashqai, and I'm almost enjoying it

I'm considerably taller than most other traffic, the dash is fairly unobtrusive and uncluttered (by modern standards), it's shockingly comfy (by modern standards), and best of all I'm getting my first ever experience of cruise control. You can adjust the speed incrementally with a toggle on the steering wheel, and I covered several counties-worth of M-way on Tuesday night without touching any pedals. On the downside, I can confirm that  automatic wipers are unbelievably dreadful.

If it were mine, I'd be in a constant state of anticipation of massive wallet-destroying problems, but as it is I'm having a very (guiltily) nice few days.
