I had  185s and 195s on hatch and estate, the 195s only rubbed on one of mine, a hatch with dodgy rear bearings iirc.

The sunroof saga continues. It now doesn't seem to work. Almost snapped the manual lever trying to get it closed! So now I've got an utterly pointless bit of glass above the driver's seats letting in water. Time for Sikaflex and a flat bit of tin? That'll look well classy*.

Family get together game playing fun*.

One game we call stop the bus involves having ten categories like river, animal, band etc. Someone's says a letter and you have to write down an answer for each starting with the letter.

We had make of car as a category.

Name a car make starting with E. Don't google.

Have you tried using a cable oiler, like you get from bike shops? They force oil down the sleeve, and if the Gods are smiling, it'll free up with a bit of exercise.

Works on anything that looks like a bike brake cable, so throttle and clutch cables, window winders, remote boot release etc. Damn handy thing to have.

Not a bad shout. I had to oil the 2CV's throttle cable the other day as it had got all sticky.

That sounds like a top tip for speedo cables as well - was wondering how to do this when I eventually get around to replacing the one on the Rover.  Thanks :-)

Edit: Oh, and since DW beat me to it with Elva, Excalibur.

Off the top of my head, the best I can do is Excelsior... mainly a motorbike manufacturer but IIRC they did do some micro-car things.

EDIT: just checked - the British Excelsior company sold its cars under the name of Bayliss Thomas because there was a Belgian car manufacturer called Excelsior.

Of course, I meant the Belgian company, in that case... ahem... :-)

Excalibur.

I'll concede you that one sir, as I think you hit the button while I was still editing my previous post.

Turns out that for some reason, the sunroof had taken the blind back with it into the rear roof cavity, jamming everything up. It now works again, but only sliding back and forth. I'm not sure how it has happened, but the motor seems confused about where the stop position is between tilt and slide. Meh. I'm not putting it back together today. The headlining is absolutely soaked, so the car can sit around in the sun for a few days with everything loose.

To be honest, you can make a cable oiler out of a syringe and some tube. Slit the tube so it sits over the cable and comes up flush to the end of the sleeve. Seal the gap with tape, and crack on.

The benefit with proper ones is that the plunger has a screw thread, so you can wind it down bit by bit.

Singer sewing machine oil works a treat in that.

I thought Eagle was the car and Anglo American Racers was the maker, but then that's a different Eagle

My addition to the list is Ensign

The current VAG daily smoker continued its painless ownership experience by going through the MOT without problems. 13 years/ 244,000 miles have left it slightly battered in places, but my MOT man was happy enough with it.

I have exactly the same issue with mine at the moment.  I've bought a new thermostat which arrived today so I'll change that as it's cheap and easy.  That said, it comes up to temperature absolutely fine.  If that doesn't work, it'll probably be the heater valve which is behind the dashboard:

http://www.volvoclub.org.uk/faq/HeatingAirConditioning.html#WaterValveReplacement

(that's a US site so substitute left for right).

I hope it isn't that, valves for cars with air con seem a bit hard to come by - every one I've seen is listed for A/C (unless it's actually the same part - the A/C models have it under the bonnet and heater-only cars have it under the dash) and it's buried deep behind the dashboard.  In theory it'd be leaking if it had failed but it might just be stuck, the carpets are dry.

It is the silly season at work, no one else in work at all in my dept. today so I made some space and drove the van inside.

Only changing the oil, but doing the job on a smooth, clean concrete floor and with the heating flat out, what luxury!

New years resolution: do something about indoor car facilities at home.

Edsel and Excaliber are already taken so I'm going to go for Enfield.

Since we're not allowed to Google I don't know if I can have English Electric, I have this feeling they did make some cars as well as all the other guff but it probably doesn't count.

It was bitterly cold this morning when I got up, when I looked out of the window I saw this Fiesta stuck out into the road, on a perfectly straight length of 30mph road they have managed to lose it and plough it into the rear end of the Laguna estate across the road pushing the rear wheel forwards, I bet they are happy.

Green flag have been out and moved it to the pavement now but it's still sat there, this morning it was half blocking the road with no one to be seen about.

In other news I went round my dad's this morning and fixed the noisy belt on the Merc, I had bought a new vibration dampener for it (£28) but we couldn't undo the Allen bolt holding the tensioner pulley on but managed to fix the old dampener anyway. The hole and the end had wron larger so we've drilled the bracket out, fitted a larger bolt and nylock nut so it's tight now which has made it much quieter, I still need to sell it though...

And lastly I need some advise on this, this is the distributer on my Civic, either myself or someone else has managed to trap that right hand cable between the housing and the dizzy cap cutting the outer cover and damaging the cable inside, I wonder if it's one of the reasons the car sometimes cuts out?.

What would this cable be called and is it repairable would you thought?.

Isn't Edsel a model rather than a make?

Nope, Edsel was created as a separate marque so Ford could emulate GM's five-brand lineup. I think the order was Ford-Edsel-Mercury-Lincoln-Continental but I'm not sure, Edsel may have been above Mercury.

Is that not just an earth for the points?

I thought it was the live coming in to the points, but may well be wrong. Again.

And my own contributions to the E theme are two I discovered only yesterday: Epic and Envoy were the marque names for the Vauxhall Viva and Victor when sold by Buick dealers in Canada. Confusingly Pontiac dealers sold the same cars as Vauxhalls.

It can be repaired.  Remove it from the car, trim any excess cover off and re-wrap with electrical tape tightly.  I've done this successfully on at least two cars.

Distributors are like a black art to me, I haven't a clue. The other side looks nice and simple to remove but this side has hidden screws which i bet I'd have to remove the dizzy to get too.

I'm guessing new wires don't come with points then?.

Have we had Evante? Was Esprit another one? Pretty sure they were a kit car company rather than a model name? Trying not to google it...
