Tripple breakdown shocker for Mrs barefoot in 944 last night.

Mega traffic jams on M1, water temp went up, oil pressure went down and then mega warning lights started to flash. She is no fool my wife and pulled onto the hard shoulder and shut down sharpish, hazard lights & sidelights and then amazingly, my brother turned up and stopped with her for an hour until the traffic cleared.

Went to restart, clickety clickety solenoid. Arse biscuits, brother has jump leads - in a 2013 company Passat!

Fired up driving home and bugger me, knob pops out of handbrake and flies across carpet for no apparent reason.

Definately not OMGHGF, all fluids good, fired up spot on this morning. Suspect dodgy fan thermo switch thing, so off to the garage for examination, testing.

The clutch on the Landrover still aint right. The unions both have a smear of liquid on them so obviously still leaking. I assume this is down to my shonky old pipe flaring tool doing slightly wonky flares on the copper tube.

My Brother in law came up with a good idea....if I take the old bits into town, he knows a place that makes up long aviation style brake flexi hoses while you wait to whatever length and fittings you need. Might be the solution. Might be bloody expensive too. I will try another attempt with my flare tool and if I still get no joy I will see about getting one done.

I had to do this for the clutch hose for my Cortina and it was less then the NLA original spec one used to cost.

More progress in the garage/fleet clearance; sold a few spanners, sent the bike off to it's new home...

Trying to flog the modern at moment, and grudgingly suggested I might take a cheap p/x

This arrived in my inbox with the only info being that it's a 2003 plate - The eBay school of photography has a new star pupil.

The Cavalier was the first car I paid cash money for; it's got sentimental value of sorts. The rest are keeping the Swedish balance in check, despite 3/4s of them being built elsewhere

That looks bloody fantastic, excellent work! Also, those period stickers in the back window HAVE to stay, they're superb.

Fingers crossed for a straightforward recommissioning! It doesn't look hopelessly rusty anyway (on top at least).

Got on with fixing the wifes* 306 today, I had an afternoon free, and given the fact that he still insists on driving the thing as it is, I thought I better do something about it.

I knew that there was some rather nasty noises coming from the NSF suspension, and a cursory glance the other day showed that the strut had shat itself, and everything was blathered in oil.

A new shocker was sourced from GSF for a pretty reasonable £34.00, and I set about stripping the thing. It appears to have recently had a bottom arm, brake discs, pads and a ARB link, so I thought it should come apart pretty easily.

I was right, although it came apart a little too easily. It would seem that the plunger part of the damper had fallen off inside the strut, so when i jacked it up, it just kinda fell apart, and the spring fell on the floor. The wife* just laughed and said "F@ck, I was doing 80 in that this morning, well, I didn't die". Lunatic.

He 'helped', well, actually got in the way, but did fetch me beers and cups of coffee when requested. But at any point when I actually needed him to do something useful, he'd either wandered off, or was on the phone. Typical apprentices.

I did give him the lovely task of compressing the spring, which took him a fair few attempts to get right.

I'm looking for a picture of a dealer sticker from Tim Brinton Cars Ltd, Bury St Edmunds.

Early 80's with the Talbot logo, internetz only has the earlier Chrysler version.

Agreed purchase of broken peugeot van, then found it's last sale on ebay, it's been fitted with the wrong engine at some point.

Fuck.

Is there not a place that makes these retro main dealer stickers and number plates?

Hand brake knob screwed back in, battery and alternator both checked and OK. A foot of twenty seven year old, rather corroded wiring replaced and job, jobbed.

Yes, but to make them they need a picture of the original.

I'M BACK FROM MY ADVENTURE.

I've not really been anywhere, I just managed to lock myself out of the forum every time I tried to get on, got frustrated, gave up, forgot, got stuck in a vicious circle.

I did however pick this up while I was gone;

Proper lump of retro shite-approved tuning. Probably cost whoever built it the best part of £2k for barely 200bhp. GR9 VALUE.

Sure is, although i'm hoping to put it to a slightly different use. It's an old Swaymar tuned Essex 3.1; 10.5:1 compression, stage 3 heads, Group 1 spec camshaft plus a few other bits and pieces. Should be quite fun when i'm done with it.

Who's idea was it to stop fitting drain plugs to radiators.

I've been meaning to put some anti freeze in the Cortina for a couple of weeks, I had it in my mind it would take 10 seconds what with having a drain plug.

Tonight I realised the mk1 escort radiator I have fitted doesn't have one, so bottom hose off, realistically it didn't take that much longer but I was still pissed.

Is it a pukka swaymar lump or big valve heads on a stock bottom end?

Are the valves in the bottom head in this pic the same size as the ones in the top pic, or is this a comparison picture to show how the head differs from standard?

Yes there is - DMB Graphics: http://www.dmb.uk.com/cat/122/dealer-sets.  They'll do them to order.

Big heads, Powermax high comp pistons, Group 1 spec cam, looks like it's running standard rods (like most), but not had it apart enough to see what's been done inside it properly yet. Spoke to the guys at Burton about it as it was advertised as being one of theirs, though they reckoned it all pointed more towards Swaymar. I'm not overly bothered where it came from as i'm going to be going through it pretty comprehensively.

Apparently it was the B engine for an old Mk1 Capri national hot rod, the A engine was fully ARP'd-out, shot peened, the works, but then that wasn't £350!

And Mr Ecoli, that's a comparison between standard, although I do wonder what would happen if I ran those two together.

Mo and Merc save day.

Girl who I work with found her car battery had gone flat after she'd left the side-lights on. As per usual, despite owning 2 sets of jump leads, none of them were with me. So, colleague_girl jumps in with me (commenting on how nice the Merc is, thank goodness I'm not driving that 827 Coupe) where we find the next door tyre place claimed they didn't have jump leads, nor did the car washing place in the same yard, so off down Stratford road we trundled eventually getting to a Petrol Station who actually had a set. Girl pays for jump leads and off we go back to her car through a maze of backstreets upto aviod the non-moving traffic on Stratford road.

Soon Merc is hooked up to Girls Focus and it bursts into life. Job jobbed.
