I may have enjoyed the Tesla the other day, but I've had an epic drive in the 2CV today.

Over 100 miles around mid and North Wales, so she now has less than 1200 miles to go before hitting 200,000.

There was a nice mix of tin.

Oh, and this drove past!

Yes, it's a Nova saloon. I'd hoped for a better shot but a stupid modern Citroen thing was coming the other way.

I'm guessing it's for sale then, or does the Missus like this one?

She does like it, but I only got it to knock it out again if truth be told.

I organised a car run today for the Facebook car group me and my mate run, We had a turnout of around 15 cars which i thought was good considering the weather and the flooded roads, Tescos was a bit damp.

We all made it to Sizewell without to much drama even though everyone had to drive though some bad floods.

Anyway whilst i was standing at Tescos some chap came over to say that he had a 190E 2.3-16v that he wanted to sell as it wouldn't run very well, It was £1500 and i took his number.

On the way back from Sizewell i decided to stop of and take a look at the Merc, Sadly it wasn't as nice as i hoped, it wouldn't fire up whilst i was there, so i removed the dipstick and it looked like chocolate milkshake, that would be why it didn't run!. Shame really as it's a very cool looking car and the interior was gorgeous.

It's done 160k mind you and had a few scabs, for once i walked away, if it wasn't a auto i might have gone for it though, how hard can a head gasket be?.

That is nice, normally the 4 cylinder 190s and 124s are less prone to HGF than the 6 cylinder engines, dunno about the 16 valve ones tho. Looks very tasty indeed, apart from the crap chinese ebay special SEC grille, £1500 probably still a bit steep though.

a good prod about underneath n in at the sills, and rear subframe mounts might be advisable...from what Ive seen, the 16vs, for some reason seem to suffer a lot more 'seriously advanced underskirt corrosion' than the 8v models....

I recall seeing vidd of a guy [at the casting dept.. Cossie.. doing these heads] blowing a very rich oxy torch over the moulds.... the black/carbon smoked deposit was 100% ace for releasing the ally casting... So 'E Sedd  8)

In between the rain I have tried to fit a stereo to the civic. Tried three different ones to no avail.

After poking it with a multimeter I have found that the ground isn't working.

Where would this terminate? Would it also be the cause of the wipers playing silly buggers?

Just make a new ground, it doesn't have to be the original. Any bodywork, or metal support struts behind the dash will do. For the wipers, could possibly be that too - find the ground on the motor (or maybe just the motor casing) and run a wire to the bodywork. You can't have too many grounds.

It being an auto sinks it for me. A car like that needs an manual box.

TBH if it had the dogleg gearbox i'd probably have been stupid and bought it (even though I'm skint at the moment) but sensibly i walked away. Being a 1989 car with the 2.3-16 makes it a very late car as the 2.5's came out in 1988, what with the air con and full heated/electric leather seats it would have been a very expensive car when new.

But 190 manual boxes are bloody awful. I can only assume the 2.3 16 is the same.

Presume the dogleg is a ZF gearbox, so probably very different. It did take Merc a long time to get the hang of manuals. Mind you, I find the autos pretty awesome.

The dogleg gearbox is made by getrag. Not sure about the H pattern ones in the normal 190e and 190d. The H gate pattern 5 speed gearbox in my W124 shows up on the dealers computer as a getrag, and its frankly clunky and crap, marginally less so now it has fresh oil in and new rubbers on the selectors, plus 1 on what dollywobbler said

I spent much of today breaking up the dead Multipla for spares to go on the "new" Multipla. For some reason I decided to take the engine and box out. I think the reasoning was that with a complete power unit squirrelled away i'd have a supply of parts to pick over when I need them. FFS. I broke my engine hoist (it's only an old machine lift, but still..) My trolley jack decided to throw in the towel and as expected, I made a right frigging mess. It took all day too.

Without an engine hoist I had to drop the engine out onto the floor, jack the Multipla up a bit at a time (fucked  trolley jack see,) and wedge bits of wood underneath. Eventually I was able to wriggle the power unit out. I just pushed the Multipla off the jack to get it down, bastard thing.

I had no way of getting it into the garage properly, so I just levered it up and over and stood it on it's crank pulley next to the garage door. It's massive, and now I can't move it.

My whole body aches. I'm too old for this sort of Sunday afternoon!

Bollocks. Today I went to Tin Worm to look at a Rover 800 Coupe. Whilst there I went to Steve's house to picture a 45. On the way back I noticed the temp needle getting higher but not dangerously, then I could faintly smell oil, then I decided to get back to Tin Worm asap. Some minor smoke was coming from the engine, once back I realised why, the oil cap had fallen off and made a mess of the engine bay.

Thankfully, seemingly no damage had been done. Seemingly I obviously hadn't replaced the cap properly when I topped up the oil yesterday. I cleaned up the engine bay, topped up the oil and replaced the cap tightly.

I had my first ever drive of a P12 Primera today.  They're a bit rubbish, aren't they?

I dunno, I drove a P12 6-speed Diesel from Brussels to Germany and back again and found it very acceptable.

This evening I have mainly been using superglue to fix* broken stuff around the house - including a table (chunk taken out of one corner of the table-top), a picture (one hanging point detached from backing board - t'other is stuck on eith heat-gun glue so will need doing at some stage, I'm sure), and a mini-statue brought back from a trip to China fifteen years ago (he'd lost his head). Wish I wasn't such a clumsy sod; but thank goodness for superglue.

3am weld-a-thon complete.

Trying desperately to re-inforce the towbar on the 205 after it pulled the boot floor off towing shonky 306s around the north of England.

500 mile round trip to Brighton and back with trailer organised for Tuesday and Wednesday to collect 200L of veg oil, uni interview for the girlfriend, and to collect washing machine for KruJoe and chod-parts for Shitpeas.

Hope it holds up!

And fingers crossed I don't get caught towing without a trailer licence...

Ummm it isnt really an N reg,  its a T reg but I didnt want to piss on his parade and said thank you, he had a 51 plate Micra K11 and said he has just bought another for spares as he likes it that much.

This was a 1.8 petrol auto.  To be fair, it wasn't all that bad on the motorway (if rather underpowered), but on twistier roads it has none of the taut road manners of the P10 and P11.  Plus the build quality is shite.

Yep. They're shit. The rental firm I used to work for had a load of 1.8 manuals from new in about 2002. They were awful when new, and even worse after six months of sales rep abuse. I still see one of the old rental ones locally as a taxi. God knows how bad that must be by now.

They are grim. First car I ever drove where the heater controls were buried in some bloody menu somewhere.

The clutch on the Landrover still aint right. The unions both have a smear of liquid on them so obviously still leaking. I assume this is down to my shonky old pipe flaring tool doing slightly wonky flares on the copper tube.

My Brother in law came up with a good idea....if I take the old bits into town, he knows a place that makes up long aviation style brake flexi hoses while you wait to whatever length and fittings you need. Might be the solution. Might be bloody expensive too. I will try another attempt with my flare tool and if I still get no joy I will see about getting one done.

Bought this yesterday. Was after a compressor but remembered my halfords jack is getting fooked.

Saddle is only 75mm high so I no longer have to drive the vectra on to wooden blocks first.

It says 2 tonne - I think it weighs two tonne to be honest - my ball sack was dragging the floor carrying from the car to the house.

After messing with some scrap carburettors today we put the fiesta on a gas analyser and found it out its running really well.

As it got hot the sodding electric fan came on, the twat never works normally even though the tell gauge goes up. Might be the plug wasn't just seated right but now is

This one's an ex minicab, and has 202K on the clock.  So it's probably not the best example of the breed.  But the front windows don't work, the front passenger door won't open from the outside and if you switch the wipers on they won't turn off again until you switch off the ignition.  And much of the interior trim feels like it would come away in your hand.  Still, at least the reversing camera works...
