I've spent my own time gardening now that I've given up on getting the Austin ready for shitefest (the brakes are fucked and yet more rot found in the inner arches).

This hasn't stopped me spannering though, first victim was the ride on mower at work.  It has 3 blades in a row powered by belts,  each blade has a shear bolt towards each end in case it hits something solid.  When I got to it half of them had gone and one of the blade tips was bent back, the gaffer swore blind that it was noisy when he started it up this morning and he hadn't hit owt.  Investigations found that the o/s blade was running slightly behind the others and catching the centre one, it was also loose where the other two connected really solidly with their belts.  Several bolts out later and I had the pulley in bits and found a metal part that should have fitted tightly to a woodruff key but now didn't.  As luck would have it, it was symetrical so I flipped it over and used the as new woodruff slot on the other side.  Using the fact that the pulley split in two to my advantage I advanced that blade one tooth without slackening everything off.  Gaffer was well chuffed that we didn't have to take it in for repairs.

After he buggered off home a mate rang with car bother so I clocked off for my break and went to investigate.  He was having a very bad day already and forgot that his V reg Escort ran on diesel.  I made a start on helping to drain the tank but he was called away so we gave up and I gave him a lift home.  I can't see it ending well for the Ford as the fuel light was on before he filled up and drove off.

I spent this evening rolling about under this BMW removing the undertray to try to figure out the oil leak. The thing is so lardy the jack fucking sank into the tarmac! I'm sure my landlord with be well chuffed about that when he comes back from his holidays. Anyway I got it all off eventually and it looks like the leak is coming from the sump gasket, which look like a nightmare because it's right over the cross member, which the steering rack is attached to. Magic.

Really have the horn for an early R5 and I've got all creamed up over this little honey. It's really close to the tunnel and sounds mechanically sorted. I first saw it about 2 months ago, but now it's affordable and I'd pay the asking price if it's in sensible nick. Annoyingly though the seller has ignored my two email messages... bugger! They are written in finest google translate as I don't speak the lingo but I kept it simple and followed up in English (The Spitfire in one of the pics suggests a Brit connection anyway). Might crack email number 3 out tomorrow and repeat until they submit.

Find someone who can write proper French, GT is not ideal for composing emails which are intended to be taken seriously. I ike the pic taken on the road, love the old-style faded blue paint which leaves white dust all over your jeans.

Do you want me to ring up the seller Alexg? If so PM me what questions you want answered and I will attempt to determine the nature of the Bobby Moore.

I'm feeling utterly out of it at the moment. It's a couple of weeks until Shitefest but I've been so busy that I'm checking about three threads a day on here, and utterly ignoring my fleet. Sirion still needs the brakes sorting. 2CV is still hiding in my garage and the BX is temporarily residing in Cheltenham. I get it back on Thursday - swapping back from the borrowed Jag. Which has more than three times the power.

Fitted a new starter motor to the 306 dizzler, as the other one was failing to proceed every now and then. One ecp special and now it turns over at 4x the earths rotational speed, which is good.

It's still leaking oil and I reckon it's from the rocker cover, even though I changed it a month or so back so shelled out for a pukka pug one, it fits better and was just 'nice' so we will see.

My glamorous assistant wasn't much help, she kept coming to me and running off, like she wanted to show me something, probably a little boy had fell down a well or summat.

Fitted new discs and pads at the back of the xsara. Nsr caliper was knackered so swapped that for a reconditioned one.

Got fronts to do tomorrow.

I managed to get a strand of wire stuck under my nail bed on my thumb which hurts like buggery now

Went to Dover Transport Museum again today. I've joined the museum society and will be doing some volunteering, to help maintain and restore the vast fleet of tat owned by the museum. First up will be this little '54 Austin A30, which I hope to make a start on in the near future. It has been abandoned since 2012 when it was last worked on by a student who moved universities and left the work unfinished. Needs a new petrol tank apparently, and some welding to the floor by the handbrake, and the brake master cylinder has been unbolted from the floor and is hanging by the pedal under the car - not sure why. All in all a delightful little car, and it'll be good to see it back on the road, promoting the museum.

In addition to the obvious benefits of tinkering with old tat without the financial responsibility for its upkeep, as a member I have access to a fully kitted out workshop, four post lift and the museum's recovery truck, which is excellent.

Rarity highlights of the museum include a Renault 4CV, Delage, 1920's Pierce-Arrow flatbed truck and an ex AA Peugeot 309 in yellow.

I don't know why, but the Xantia is cheaper to insure than a 205.  I don't mind, the Xantia is the car I'd rather have, I just don't understand the logic of it.

205 has a crazy twin brother that used to chuck owners in the dyke.    zantia respectable family transport

Keypad will have something to do with it as harder to nick. Also got abs and airbags so of course safer if you crash. Plus the 205 are owned by hooligans whereas xantia is a gentlemans steed :)

Tagorasx I'm from down that way, live in Edinburgh now though. Still got friends down there though...

Anyone in Ayr?

Me! Well I'm about 5 miles away.

205 more likely to be owned by young'uns. Young'uns more likely to smack their car into a church full of kittens.

Xantia more likely to be owned by an middle-aged man. Middle-aged man more likely to carefully consider whether he wants one yorkshire pudding or two on his Sunday roast.

Ergo, 205 more risky.

WARNING, modern car talk.  Avoid if offended.

Both my cars are broken, and as I did my back in trying to fix the Cavalier last weekend (which I failed to do) I'm going to be lavish and hire a car for the BH weekend.  I can get a Citroen C5 for the same price as a Panda according to the internet.  I like the idea of both although am veering towards the Panda as no doubt you can actually see out of the bloody thing.  But the 'or similar vehicle' bit probably means I'll get lumbered with something German.  I haven't driven something modern for ages so let's see what all the fuss is about!

I have a 6 month ticket for the Kia, so now I'm road legal for Shitefest.

However I have started browsing for spring kits to stiffen it up and give it a bit more go-kart vibe. This may become a not cheap, cheap car.

Seriously though, sounds like fun. Let us know how you get on.

After five years of the most awkward Resurrection I've ever undertaken.

It's coming to stay for a short while.

Current C5 is a very nice car, but HUGE and I wouldn't like to drive one around a city. Panda wins.

My news is that the Jaguar has now been re-swapped for the BX. Losing two-thirds of the power output didn't seem to slow me down much on the way home, and the BX is actually more fun to drive quickly in the wet, as it is more predictable. Also quite nice to be back in a vehicle where the fuel gauge and throttle pedal don't seem to be linked.

Why a short while?

Because it's alive. My work here is done.

I'm gonna drive it 1000 miles and flog it.

That'll do me. I've had my fun.

see, this post is win and lose..

Win= driving a slow car quickly and effectively in adverse conditions

Lose= not being able to marvel at the fuel gauge dropping at the same rate the revs rise

overall, the win is cheaper and possibly more fun:)
