I've just agreed to buy a 1979 BMW 633 CSI in JRG with 34k :-D

You can't just throw that out there without more details and pictures..

Why can't a family car with a petrol engine do 45-50mpg now? I was getting low-mid 30s from clapped-out 1970s crocks with rubbish carburettors 25 years ago, and that was before I discovered that throttle pedals have an intermediate position. I would expect to get mid-high 40s from the modern equivalents with their engine management etc, but that doesn't seem to be the case.

Because they are now so heavy because of the 'OMG - think of the children' safety bollox, wiring for electric wipe your nose switches and can't have wheels less than 8 inches wide in case it makes me look uncool in the street YO!

I get nearly 30 mpg around town out of a 20 year old 1.8 Cavalier FFS!

I absolutely fucking love my mk3 golf with its clacky NA diesel in, it does 50mpg NO MATTER WHAT and I drive it totally flat out all the time on nice windy A roads to work and back. I've bought a TD to go in there but I dunno if I'd spoil it. Twice as much BHP would definitely be nice though

Can I suggest waiting to see how I get on with the non-turbo BX? Since my last non-turbo BX, I've owned two blown ones. Not sure if I'm going to love returning to a world of no lag and a torque curve as flat as Cat Deeley's chest, or if I'm going to end up just wishing the thing would get quick at some point, and whistle a bit.

I'm getting excited now, found out a little more about this OMG GENUINE GARAGE FIND Corsair, apparently it's been in the garage since 1989 after this chaps dad died, he wanted to sell it a few years ago but his mother wouldn't let him but she's recently died so he now looking at selling it but doesn't know much about old cars.

I've got his number and address now so I'll be ringing him tomorrow to arrange a viewing. Hopefully it's not a totally basket case and I can talk my dad into paying for it!

I have managed to get xantia running again. Removed all the jubilee clips and replaced with new ones. Removed and cleaned the filter housing. Used the end of a rubber glove in the water screw to seal that up as well. It seems to have stopped the air getting in.

On the downside i tried to adjust the clutch cable. It was at the top of its travel. Adjusting it has lowered it but nuts are right at the end of their travel. I think this means new clutch time. It isn't something i want to do myself so need to make a decision about whether to keep it or not.

It also needs a cambelt or to play cambelt roulette. The brakes are juddering so that needs looking at. Also an associated squeaking from front left although think this is brake related.

Decisions decisons....

jubilee clips are not the best for diseasal pipe work cos they often dont tighten "round"- this was always one of the answers to air leak problems in the diesel car magazine back when i had a 106 dizzler

Spotted someone breaking a Pintara (in Australia) on the blue forum, put me in mind of Mr Bickle.  This link was provided: http://www.autoglasswarehouseandglazing.com.au/shop/ford-corsair-ua-sedhatchj-1989-driver-side-right-side-front-door-glass-366

1989 Ford Corsair glass is apparently the same as the Pintara so it'll either offer more options, or the same problem with a different name.

What is a better bet for a seal? Currently i has no air but if i can improve on clips i will.

Xantia has won my logic part back. It is happily running, although need front left caliper as it is sticking, so it stays for now. I need to get Scooters triumph shipped here so i have a new project to play with

Sticky caliper is probably knackered slider boots. Slapping a load of caliper grease over them may give a temporary fix until a more permanent solution can be found.

I really rate those. the 1.9 n/a dizzler is capable of astronomical mileages and to be honest little goes wrong with them. (rust and chocolate gearboxes aside)

they aren't too slow either. Probably THE best shiter's diesel car.

I'm not as keen on the pug/citroen n/a 1.9 though, it's just that little bit too gutless on motorway hills.

Also I like the mk3/4/5 transit 2.5di lump. lugging a van body around and still capable of 40+ mpg. Basically engineered and bombproof.

You're right about the n/a PSA being gutless, but if you read the road and plan ahead a little, they're ok. I suppose it depends on the area you live (i.e if there's loads of big hills) and what sort of driving you do. They're never going to be a sports car so you have to just accept that and bumble round everywhere.

I now own an Audi again. The ex-Glenn, ex-Corsaviour junior A3, to be exact. Only this time it's got a blowing exhaust.

Well the SC100 passed the MOT  I am super chuffed right now, just about to go down the post office to tax it. I may have created a rat look Whizz Kid though as it looks very shabby right now but it drives well & that is all I care about at the moment.

Springtime hoonage. Wonderful.

Entertained a motorcyclist on the way into town, with the comedy lean angles. He didn't bother passing for ages, and gave a wave when he finally overtook.

WHAT HAVE I DONE!!!!????

SDI? Be interested to know how you get on, I've had experience of petrol Fabs in 68bhp MPI, 75bhp (auto) and 100bhp 1.4 16v flavours. The latter flew when you wound it up, the former (brother in law's) is dog slow, noisy, rattly, thirsty and has a gearbox made of chocolate.

Still, they ride and handle well, feel exceptionally solid for a small car (partly because they weigh a portly 1200kgs) and are comfortable.

I've just got of the phone to the seller of this Ford Corsair and now know more about it, it's a 1968 2.0 V4 GT 4 door in red, It's got a new Ford engine and diff but can't remember the mileage, 2 owners, his dad who bought it in 1981 and the 1st owner worked for Ford and bought it off them, laid up since 1986 when his dad passed away, it hasn't ran since 1996 but as far as he can remember it's still very tidy but had a bit of mould on the interior.

He's been told it's worth between £2-6000 but I've told him it wouldn't be sadly (for him), I should be looking at it next weekend though :).

Does anybody have any idea what it could be worth in it's current state if it's pretty solid and only need recommissioning work?, I was thinking up to £1000?.

The Fabia is an SDI (Shite Diesel Inert?), picking it up today with Richard's help. It should be veg friendly.

Not sure if £450 for a modern cheap to tax small car with short T&T is a good deal or not but I'm desperate.

Assuming it's sound, it might turn a bit of a profit with a fresh ticket - it'll do while I sort my shite agenda out.

I think it'll drive a bit like a Golf 1.9D.

Posted

I would say you're about right at upto £1000.

They're nice, but people seem to assume they're worth the same as the GT Cortinas they share floorpans with.

Posted

Well just to add to that, if it's structurally solid I think it would be worth a bit more, but not if it needs welding - panels aren't easy to get hold of.

Posted

He seems to think that it was solid but it's been many years since he's looked underneath, the exhaust was shot when he last drove it, I'm expecting it to be a lot of work.

He's also got a 1981 Ford Cortina in his garage thats been there donkey years, it's done 208000 miles though, he was planning on restoring it when he retired but he retired 12 years ago and still haven't started it.

Posted

If it's solid I would definitely take a punt if I was you.

It might even have the rare 2000e gearbox? Though I know GT cortinas didn't, but it was only ever fitted to corsairs.

It's far superior to the standard ford 4 speed.

I reckon it'll be a bit of a money pit. Corsair values haven't yet attained the figures that make a brain-damage restoration worthwhile. I've often found cars that 'seem' solid to be like 'three day old teabags' in the flesh.
