What a crock of fucking bollocks.

Isn't that marketing speak for "paying £300 a month until you die, for the priviledge of driving a slightly blinged up version of what everyone else in the neighbourhood drives" ?

Got a bit worried as the new drums I ordered for the Golf turned up today in boxes with Disc brakes illustrated upon them. Oddly, even the instructions inside refer to rotors and pads! They look lovely - far too nice to put on a car. However, I will fit them. Not sure what to do about the shoes. I have new shoes, but the old shoes look barely worn. I guess it's best to fit new and new, but it seems a bit of a waste. A second-hand heater bypass valve has arrived, so I also plan to fit that then continue with Disco wheel overhaulin'.

Just managed to get an exhaust for my Fiesta 'recommisioning' after a week of trying local factors with no joy. Full system for £70 which was more than I wanted to pay but just pleased to find it really. All parts required for MoT now just need fitting..........

Will try to post a thread when done

Tonight I did an Ooops.

The result is you may see a suprise car at Chodfest... Wait and see.

Clue- over 8 million were built.

Brother had a brainwave today and produced the halogen and projector headlight units he'd salvage from his BMW.  Turns out they're precisely the right size to fit the Princess headlight trims.  Also turns out there's enough depth to fit them.  Not a straight swap as I need to figure out just how exactly to attach the BMW brackets to the Princess with proper adjusters, but I'm very tempted as much as I love my sealed beam lights.

Thoughts?

Anyone on here interested in a Datsun Bluebird? Shape before the U11 - 910?. If no bugger is I may risk divorce and homelessness and spunk some more cash I don't have...

I would be very surprised if the BMW lights were better than the sealed beams. They might be brighter, but that doesn't mean you'll be able to see where you're going.

Fit them.  Sealed beam units are poor by comparison partly because they'll have lower wattage but also because the light is more yellow.  Changing to 5 3/4" halogens was one of the first things I did when I ran my Avenger through the winter, it made a big difference.  If I'd have thought about it at the time, I'd have raided a scrapyard BMW for these units rather than buying new Lucas jobs.

Just got a call from LV regarding my Vauxhall Brava, they don't want to repair the damage as they are not quite sure which shade of vintage weathered red/pink to match to, so they are chucking me £900 quid in lieu of repairs which will go nicely towards the Jag I have my eye on.

I've been told I can expect £850 -1000 for exporting it, I'm looking forward to seeing it with a machine gun bolted to the back driving round somalia on the BBC news.

I clearly need more suitable tools for putting rear brake shoes back together. Sent the bits off to my local garage, where they can do battle with the shoe springs with things like a vice. They'll push the new bearings into the drums for me as well. Sometimes, it's better to stop swearing and just throw a few quid into the local garage's drink fun! All the bits have arrived though, so I'm hopeful I can get the Golf back on the road later today.

In other news, I've got some -20db ear plugs which I shall test in the 2CV. I'm pretty sure that spending many hours of my life listening to a screaming flat-twin has damaged my hearing, so I'm finally taking action. These are filters rather than sound-stopping plugs, so should still allow me to hear Police sirens/bits falling off.

Renault 4?

A car immortalised in the lyrics of "The Chicken Song" by Spitting Image, where the listener is encouraged to eat one.

That was my guess John. I hope I'm right - haven't seen one in the metal for years!

Me neither... but I did hear the Spitting Image song on a Radio 4 programme about political satire a couple of weeks ago :-D

New Bosch silicone spark leads to replace the old ones on the Princess arrived today...  I remember how much of an improvement my interim budget leads had been over what was on the car when I bought it, but the Bosche ones are an even more marked improvement again.  I can set off from road ends without having to plan about a week in advance and the engine just feels more willing, quieter too which I didn't think was possible as I thought it was already as quiet as an O series gets.  Very happy stuff.

The electrical interference I was getting is reduced to almost nothing now.  We do get radio interference around here as most of the roads seem to be criss-crossed with overhead power lines, but I begin to wonder if the problem is not with the condenser which I replaced but with the radio itself.  If you push the selector buttons repeatedly on the radio while it's on, the interference will go away and steadily creep back again.  I get no weirdness from the lights or anything like that, just the radio so I wonder if it's not particularly well suppressed/shielded.

Golf is all back together again and, thankfully after all that bloody work, the handbrake seems half decent. May improve further once everything beds in, but it does actually feel capable of passing an MOT now. In a rare burst of enthusiasm, I even changed the oil and filter. Lobbed in one of those flush treatment things before draining to see if it'll help get rid of an occasional tap from the hydraulic tappets. Not sure it has been a success to be honest but the new oil is so clean I was really struggling to tell what the level was.

However, I have a feeling the alternator bearings are on their way out. There's always something!

There's a company called Wood auto supplies   http://www.woodauto.com/pdf/COMP2011.pdf  who do them dirt cheap but want £8 for delivery.  Might be worth a shitefest bulk order.

I bought alternator brushes from them for the camper for 50p a pair,  bought a few extra and put them up for £4 a pair on ebay to cover the postage.

Spent most of Wednesday and Thursday driving around east Kent in TV2, whilst enjoying the weather and listening to summery music:

Also got a chance to inspect my brother's recently acquired V70 R. Higher spec than TV2, but nowhere near as clean and tidy:

The XM is a bastard for interference too. Got a crappy tape-aux lead atm as I'm too poor to afford a decent headunit, and the drone of interferance is extreme, have to end calls sometimes as both parites are having their eardrums blown out. Even putting a massive ferrite ring around the leads from the stereo do nothing.

I've been to see my Civic this morning, It should be all ready for this afternoon after it paint job, It's looking really smart now so I'm quite excited, a friend has also papped it as it came out the spray booth.

Wow, didn't know you were getting it sprayed, Trig! Is it an all over job or just a tidy up at the front or something?

Just both front wings due to the rust and the offside drivers door and and lower rear quarter as I went though the paintwork whilst polishing it, It's costing £435 (cash in the hand guvnor) but it's worth it i think.
