If you hav

This bloody Ital Van won't go out of my mind, I've known the van since i was 14, 23 years ago!, I remember cleaning it up, sorting the old plumbers tools out in the back (which are still in there) and being taken home from work in it a few times late at night (with no tax or mot).

For years I've wanted to own the van purely for nostalgic reasons and now i have the opportunity too, but realistically it needs quite a bit of welding (mainly inner wing), all the mechanics going through which probably requires lots of parts which aren't easy to get hold of by now and all of which are things I'm not very good at, that mixed with lack of time with a baby due in 8 weeks and a 22 month old taking it all at the moment and my Rover being in the garage really makes it not a sensible thing to be doing at this present time.

But my heart says just buy it, it's "only" £800 which doesn't seems expensive, I'd probably even if i get my money back on it, I have permission from my wife to buy it and it be fantastic just to say I've saved it after all these years and to drive it a little bit before selling it on as frankly i have no use for a van anyway!.

I thought writing this all down would help me make my mind up but it's just made it worse!

If you have space, which is dry, just invest in it, and do one little bit at a time.

Kids and Babies grow up and in 15 years time you'll regret not buying it.

I will buck the trend and say don't buy the Ital Trigger. It needs a lot of work to get it to a standard you will be happy with. It needs a place to store and work on it that you haven't got and most importantly you have one little one and another on the way so priorities will change in the next few months. If you do buy it then it will become a major project that you will never find time to do. It will just sit in the nice warm garage whilst that lovely Rover has to sit outside dissolving. Ital vans were pretty crap when they were common so you won't be missing out on anything by not owning it, best to leave it as a memory rather than spoil it by actually driving the thing.

I agree.

It's a van, they were never good vans.

I had a van when I was poor, they are rubbish for kids, no windows no seats, hard ride.

It's already almost knackered, when you ignore it for another 5 years it aint going up in value.

Put the money in a trust fund, You can call it the van trust fund in case a worthy van turns up.

things I've learnt.

You can get 6'6" doors in Saab saloons with the seats down, this surprised me when I found out it fitted.

When I moved out of my first house I did so using a Saab 900 - the (single) bed fitted in nae bother.

Trigger, I'm +1 on getting that Ital bought.  Mainly because I want a go in it, but also because of the story behind it, and the fact that, at £800 and given the loony prices "classic" vans (even of the non-Ford variety) are making these days, you're highly unlikely to lose out even if you didn't end up getting it sorted.

I'm going to be ordering a second bucket at this rate...

The beading effect hides how absolutely f*cked the paint is on the Honda. It looks like someone scrubbed it with a brillo pad. It looked like that before I got all one-bucket on it, I hasten to add.

Lovely sunny day here. Vacuumed the car ( first time for a year or two) and took the matts out. Passenger side slightly damp underneath, but held at bay by my plastic sheeting and absorbent pad ( not that sort!). Washed the driver's side silver grey over-mat and put in the winter black ones. Grey one washed and still drying in the wind and sun. Then washed the car and polished the wings. Something odd is happening to the paint on the n/s/r of the car. A combination of general dulling of the rear quarter plus some crazing in the lacquer.

I will concede Panhards point that ital vans are friggin awful to drive, there's not a lot of joy to be had there. Does it have telescopic dampers on the front? 5% less miserable if so.

I HATE that job..

Just finished mine, wasn't too bad tbh. The soot etc up there was worse than the insulation. Still got in a shower as soon as I got down though.

It does indeed have front dampers, it's interesting to see the opinions on here, realistically if I sold my Dolomite (which i want to do anyway) I could move the Rover to the in laws garage freeing up my garage to work on It, I reckon just cleaning it and fitting the exhaust would bring in a profit on it and be enough to get it out of my system. Ideally I'm still waiting to buy the owners Orion Ghia injection which I've been told I can have but it's buried behind a load of other crap in another barn and he won't be starting that until he's cleared out these barns hence why I've been helping him.

I've been told I can probably have the Norman Nippy but he's got to double check with the barns/mopeds owner first although he was going to scrap it.

To be honest, I reckon reviving the Ital will be less hassle than the Orion. Injection systems can be a right pain in the arse to revive after a long time out of use.

I seem to recall reading on here that bits for the mechanical injection on Onions are made of unobtainium these days too.

Oh forgot to mention I hired Boxer van to move with, Pug I think?

Yet another van designed by a committee not talking to each other. Utter sack of shit to be frank, not even the seat base & back were designed to be used together ffs. I don't think I've ever driven anything so uncomfy and poorly designed.

There was only one good point about the entire thing (apart from you can get more in it than a car) and that's the heater warmed up a lot quicker than older diesels.

Just come back from a couple days away in Malta. My god is there some proper chod there!

Didn't take any pictures (I think others have done Malta before) of the chod though. Almost worth a holiday just to check it out. I feel like it would be utter fertile picking ground for crap old relatively unknown cars. They're RHD and a hot climate prevents rust. Maybe inland ones would be better though...

I did however go visit the classic car museum there. Well worth a visit. My camera is choc-block with pictures from there. Real selection of rare old stuff, mixed in with once common old stuff. I'll upload the photos soon and make a thread.

A-plate Ital should definitely have telescopics on the front.

The main thing I don't like about the "new" Boxers (apart from general fugliness / poor build) is that you can't see out of the bastard things.  The "old" shape (like mine) isn't brilliant, but the new ones are on a whole nother level.

Is it a mk1 Orion? They had Bosch K-Jetronic IIRC, might be some shared parts with other cars.

Yeah those doors are a joke, whoever thought 'oh lets put a HUGE bar right down the middle of where you look out.

Mind you the pedals being designed & pivoted for someone sat on the bonnet & facing backwards didn't help. Nor did the steering wheel being fitted in front of the windscreen (yes I found the adjuster, it goes from bad to worse). Not to mention the stalks that are so well hidden I always hit the cruise control adjuster not the indicators, probably due to the crap wheel position tbh. Gearbox was shit too, block shift 2nd to 4th with a load on & it made awful grinding noises every time. Oh & the comedy handbrake on the wrong side to trip you up as you got out & having such long travel that even with the seat at it's lowest I still had to nearly get out to reach it.

I won't even mention the shift light that comes on every time you lift off & every time you use any engine braking or hold a gear as you're looking up the road & know you'll be slowing down/climbing a hill shortly.

We toured NZ in a Marina van - wasn't bad tbh, other half had no problems driving it to work either other than not parking in the car park so she didn't have to admit owning it.

An Ital should be an improvement in theory. As said if storage is dry and free it's unlikely to loose you any money.

My 09 Ducato drives fine and visibility is ok . Bit difficult to judge the nose cos it's got a chin like desperate dan .

I went to the Quantum kit car owners club track day today. Various shite including an Excel, BMW 2002, MGF and obvious Quantums. I will have a sift through my photos and see if they are thread worthy if there is any interest. Only phone cam though due to it being a spur of the moment thing.

The one I hired as a 16 plate with about 16k on. I'd honestly laugh at the salesman if I'd gone to buy a van & they tried to sell me one. A proper old RWD Transit on about a B plate was a nicer thing to drive.

It's a F reg 1988 Mk2 but is the better Bosch system rather than the shit later MFi one.

I'd much rather fix/drive/own/be seen in an Ital van than an Orion.

I've got the offical 'tuning tool' for that age of EFI Trigger, it's a  long allen key with a handle on the end. Somewhere I've got the tool for doing valve seals without taking the head off too.

Is it a decision between the Orion vs ital? Apologies if you've already said but does the Orion need much bodywork?

I should be posting a collection thread for this Austin K9
