Posted in a Facebook group. Don't allow naked flames near a chassis you've just filled with Dinitrol...

That's that ruined then. Quite why you'd bother rustproofing a galvanised chassis, I'm not sure...

Sad news on the Jag, fingers crossed it's not too terrifying to fix.

Not a good day here. Not driven the Jag for a while so it's got a bit dusty so decided to wash it. Backed Jag out of garage on to drive without starting it - just let it roll out on the hill. Noticed small pool of ATF on garage floor.

Hummm. Not done that before. Checked fluid level - it is REALLY high, a good 2 centimetres above the plastic bit. It wasn't like that last time I checked it and I haven't put any more in. Hmmmm.

Started engine. Engine caught with a wobble felt through the whole car and ran slowly and rough. The transmission made a frothing sound; no forward progress.  Bollocks. I shut the engine down sharpish. Of course, the damn thing has chosen to fail to proceed in the part of the drive most difficult to move it from. But at least it had the good sense to die at home...

What d'you reckon is wrong with it? - Torque converter failure? Has the extra fluid drained out of  the torque converter? There are a billion and one ways to bugger one of these. Dare I limp it back up the hill into the garage - or is that a good way of really buggering it?

So far my diagnostic skills extend to pronouncing it "fucked". Not just any old fucked, but frothing-like-Farage-spewing-over-the-driveway-fuckedy-fucked. Fuck.

Ever wanted to know what a big bill looming looks like? Well here's a photo I took earlier!

Ekk. Dolly's idea about the rad allowing water into the box sounds plausible to me. Is the water low? Being as the box is lower than the header tank I'd expect the header tank to have gone down as it drained though.

It does look beautiful parked up though doesn't it?

An entire flotilla of wood pigeons have visited it this morning and it is now encrusted! I'm going to take it off in a moment since it is so corrosive. Marvellous.

The transmission oil cooler is in the radiator on this model (some have a separate cooler but not mine).

I have checked the coolant level - I should have mentioned that!

The coolant level is correct - it hasn't dropped at all. For the transmission dipstick level to have gone up that volume, I should think there is at least another litre of fluid sitting in the sump - maybe more. If the coolant had lost that quantity, I agree with you that there would surely be nothing in the header tank, so I am pretty sure that it is all ATF.

As I said in my poor stricken Jag's thread - would a failed transmission pump cause these symptoms?

Is it possible that the Torque converter has emptied and the frothing sound I could hear was it refilling? - But why would it do that? - It hasn't before, no matter how long the car has been parked up.

sloshing sound  ( could it of been low water level in the heating  ? )  as the water has gone into the box , and air is keeping the level up in the header tank .....

If the ATF level is high it will cause foaming, I believe, so that sound may be another symptom rather than a cause.

Then again, I may be wrong,

Neighbour is getting all of his motorbikes out. Three so far! There has been pointless revving. He has become a bit of a collector. Seeing as we have five cars between two people, perhaps I can't really criticise. There has been plenty of revving on my part of late - coolant changes on the Bluebird etc. Ah well.

Never understood the start it, rev it & switch it off thing. Get on it, start it, ride it - then yes it makes sense.

Oh I don't think he's taking any of them out. Just getting the oil circulating. I'll concede I did do this with the Honda the other week, and ran it up and down the driveway to clean the brake discs up. I HATE leaving cars standing.

I seem to be having better luck than most with my XJ6, in fact it passed an MOT this week with just a headlamp alignment being required.  This persuaded me to keep it on for at least another year, but something had to be done about the poor audio system - I was sick of listening to my meagre MP3 collection via a shite cassette adaptor with piss-poor sound quality.  The solution has been:

  • Spotify Premium: for £10 a month I can put together playlists, albums, etc on my PC, then easily download the lot onto my phone (up to ~3300 sings).
  • New head unit: Pioneer MVH-X580DAB.  Mechless with DAB, it's a simple bluetooth connection to the phone which allows me to access those albums and playlists offline.  All controlled from the head unit so I can leave the phone in my pocket.  Subdued design so it doesn't jar too much with the rest of the dash.
  • Upgraded front speakers:  I chose Focal ISC165s as they had good reviews, are reasonably priced and fairly slim.  Jaguar used some obscure speaker size so I had to lash up some adaptor rings using uPVC soffit board (unlike MDF it's waterproof, doesn't produce potentially hazardous dust and is easy to work with).
  • Underseat subwoofer: Pioneer TS-WX120A.

That whole lot came to just under £350, which seems fairly reasonable; ICE used to be much more expensive but I suppose the market for this kind of kit is rapidly diminishing.  Certainly all those small, expensive car audio shops every town used to have seem to have disappeared.

The problem with the original speakers became apparent when I removed the door cards:

New speakers are quite a snug fit and I had to cut a little foam away.

The sub fits neatly beneath the passenger seat.  In this photo the seat is fully forward, normally it can't be seen but it does steal a few inches of toe room for the rear passenger - but then a SWB XJ6 is a 17 foot-long 2-seater anyway...

post-179-0-77721200-1503934677_thumb.jpg

A stick-on DAB radio antenna thing was provided, but without instructions.  After watching some YouTube vids it became clear the windscreen was the only suitable place for it - the rear screen has too many heater elements, the rear quarterlights are too small.  There are converters available that can split a DAB signal off from the factory antenna, but reviews suggest it's a bit hit and miss. This seems to work fine so far.

post-179-0-43620100-1503935103_thumb.jpg

The sub comes with a wired remote control, which lives where the ashtray used to.

post-179-0-39694900-1503935835_thumb.jpg

And here it is working - and it's bloody brilliant!  The sub makes a huge difference, and the door speakers soak up everything the head unit throws at them.  I left the factory tweeters and they're doing an adequate job; rear speakers are mostly faded out to just provide a little fill.

I'm really pleased with it, and if the worst happens and I need to bail out of this car fast, I could remove most of it in a couple of hours.

I'm actually down to one vehicle now for the first time in years, seeing as the ZR was sold yesterday to a friend (alas for a small loss and the likelihood of a day spent doing its cambelt and front discs fairly soon, but never mind).

I'm torn now, the Hiace does general driving duties absolutely fine but it's a tad thirsty and bulky.  On the other hand, the savings are very useful at the moment.  I think I might hold off until October and see about getting something else then, although I know that resolution might be hard to stick to!

Get another bubble. Doesn't Cavcraft have one for sale right now? How convenient!

Thought this was really interesting. Hopefully it'll cause a few people to put off that visit to the showroom tomorrow.

Did anyone see the guy paying £250 a month for a 1.0 Fiesta?

Definitely. But in the long run, the fix has to be to encourage better maths, personal budgeting and general awareness from an early age. There will always be some deal of one sort or another out there - people have to be better able to judge what's what.

Just like me, from my ivory tower.

You mean something like a working education system?

They'll never do that, keeping the masses thick makes them much easier to herd.

Nice work, the one thing (apart from aircon) I wanted in my XJ40 was mooooar ICE.

Sale staff lying through there teeth,0 emissions with diesel cars.

They will always find fault with a returned car.

My pioneer dab+ headunit was one of the better investments I've made in a while, hope to keep it for a long time! Their solid things! I plumped for a magnetic external aerial though, mainly because I love in a dab black spot and the windscreen one was shit!

All the hot* 205 action on here lately made me cave and finally leave a note on the local one owner, 25k example. I am not expecting them to sell but heck, worth a shot.

I beg to differ. I could understand it if motorbikes sounded nice, but some  V-twins and triples aside, they invariably just sound shit. Harley Davidson topping that particular tree.

Got the w210 estate booked into my local merc indie to look at the leaking fuel injector problem that's diluting the sump oil so the other merc is now doing daily duties....post-4673-0-80826700-1504003376_thumb.jpg

I had an Audi 3speed auto that when left much more than a day would drain it's torque converter into the transmission sump.

If checked before starting the engine, the oil level was really high.

It would make a whirring noise for a bit and then slowly pick up drive as the 'convertor filled.

I ignored the problem, it didn't go away but it didn't get any worse either in the 5 years I drove it.

**The transmission would also go into neutral on harsh right-hand bends, ie roundabouts. Oil-surge I suppose. Fuck knows why I put up with the bastard thing for so long.

You may differ all you like, but will never convince me.

I've had a couple of Hardlys. People used to ask me to fire them up.

I neglected to say that I'm stone deaf. I can just switch off if I wish.
