Possibly one for the daft question thread, but does anyone know if there is a hidden manual tailgate release on an 03 Volvo XC90? I have had a call from a friend whose Volvo is dead, they have tried to jump it from the connectors under the bonnet, it did briefly have some life, but it looks like the cold snap has completely killed the battery and they can't get the tailgate to open because of dead battery and the battery is in the boot. I'm sure there must be a way to access the battery and have offered to have a look tomorrow

Its a hatchback, so fold the seats down, there is most likely a anti-kidnap boot opening handle on the tailgate (see handbook)

Presumably if they attach a good battery to the jump points under the bonnet it would power up the car enough to open the tailgate, even if it won't start the car?

I asked if this had been tried, I was told that they had "some sparks" but nothing worked (I hope the leads were connected the right way). I asked if there was a handle on the inside of the tailgate ( it has the 7 seats do I assumed it would) but was told there isn't one I shall have a look tomorrow.

I'm hoping it is going to be easy as I'm bearing in mind that this is the same person who couldn't get the keys out of it one day (she had not put the gear selector in park)

Failing that, a housebrick makes an excellent low-cost, portable and widely compatible unlocking tool.

Parts collection for post muntjac splatter fest repair event progressing nicely.

It sounded like a 'deer' job, but it won't end up costing too much.

And no, it didn't suffer, thank Christ. Had it not panicked and bolted back at me as it braked and swerved, it would have escaped unharmed.

How long has it taken you lot to get bored?

.

With my current car, never. I have a love affair with the D24 Volkswagen/Volvo engine as fitted to my 940, and the car is just like a comfortable old shoe, I know every foible and detail of it, I'll never get rid until it's absolutely knackered. It is just fundamentally the "right" car for me and I don't know what I'd ever replace it with.

But..I know exactly what you mean, I had a brief foray into modern/boring with a mondeo a few years back. After a week I detested it, despite being good at everything it was the most soulless ditchwater dull vehicle I'd ever driven. Sold very quickly and bought a 20 year old SD1.

One of the site labourers "traumatised" a load of passers by after coming across a deer someone had hit and left suffering in the road. They all appeared just as he was breaking it's neck :(

9 Range Rovers ? Really ? According to LR website there's 7 dealerships in NZ and they seem to sell the complete range ( ha!) ie Ewok, Sport and Proper Range Rover.

WRONG..... There are 8 (eight) dealers. To be fair they sold 1148 Landrovers.

That's about 12 Landys a month and 1 a year for the Range Rovers. To be even more fair all of those dealers sell other makes of cars as well.

If you try this unlocking method on one or the doors make sure someone else gets the window replacement job as it's trully fucking horrible.

Hook some decent jump leads up under the bonnet, starter or alternator are usually the easiest to access. Failing that I used a bit of wire to put power into fuses in a merc with the same malody till I found the one controlling central locking.

Then tell them to oil the bloody locks!!!

Getting bored with cars? I think I may have actually smashed through the other side. I'm completely bored with changing cars. I don't love the ones I have now, but I really, really can't be arsed with the hassle of buying something else, selling what I've got, discovering just how much stuff is knackered on the new car, paying more insurance fees, sorting tax, fixing all the stuff, realising the car is worth less than the repairs cost, going to the trouble of selling it, getting a new one, discovering just how much stuff is knackered etc etc.

I'm deeply worried. Don't get me wrong, I bloody love a collection caper. I just can't be arsed with the admin. Maybe I should offer collection caper services for others instead.

It's the time of year. Wait until it gets lighter again and you'll feel better and be back to serial car swapping.

Perhaps you need to be more selective with your purchases? At least if you buy from within the shitepot you'll get an honest appraisal.

Changed The Volvo's engine oil and filter today. As ever, a nice and easy job:

I intend to change The Aero's tomorrow, which may or may not be as nice or easy.

I have also done maintenance type stuff... on the Kia for Gods sake! I must declare, that I didn't actually intend to, I intended to get the dollop out of the garage but once again, I forgot the keys! Keys to the garage, yes, keys to the car... no.

So, I remembered all thise years ago I had loads of spares (wiper blades, oil filters, oil - Mobil 1 no less- and all the various fluids) so as my plans had once again been thwarted by senility/stupidity/absentmindedness I began  a search for these bits. Took ages to find the blades, but there they were, still in the sealed wrapper, so I set to with a few tools from my toolbox (first time of touching them in at least 4.5 years!) and changed wiper blades, checked tyre pressures, oil level etc. Power steering fluid was low so I wasted about 15 minutes looking for it before remembering it was in the Boot of the Bentley from when it had a leak. Of course, the Bentley is locked and the keys are...

But, one thing that has been bugging me ever since all this lot moved up to the garage is/was: where are all my fucking hammers? Among them was my most prized possession; a copper/hide mallet that I paid lots for and have never used and I was sure some light fingered bastard had had it away. I sodding found them, colour me happy! DOn't want to use them, just glad I still have them.

Got home, went to get dog food from the cupboard and there was the PAS fluid (yes, I have a 'strange' storage system!) so I did top up the fluid after all.

After all that (really nothing in the grand scale of things, but little victories and such) it started to piss down so glad the car is safely locked away with its fleecey cover on, all cosy and warm...

Yeah I know, I could bore for Britain!  :)

I replaced an indicator bulb on the Discovery.  Whoopie-doo, I hear you say, big deal, but it's a Land Rover so there was still a lot of rust, mud traps and swearing.

The bulb had blown because the indicator lens in the rear bumper is cracked and it gets wet and rusty inside, so I ordered a new rear light unit.  But Solihull attached them with mild steel nuts inside the bumper directly in line to catch maximum salt spray and wet mud, with predictable consequences.  So I gave up after a while and just replaced the bulb and bulb holder.

Oh and I bought a two-pack of bulbs and only one worked.  Quality.

PO of the camper decided the best colour for carpet when camping was White.

WHITE!!!

Needless to say, after 4 years with us, it wasn't white any more.

Meanwhile, the blue carpet fitted around the overhead cab bed by the coachbuilder 27 years ago was degrading, something not helped by Barry using it as a cat scratcher when I wasn't looking.

So, over the last couple of weekends I've been slowly removing and replacing the old carpet and finally it's been replaced with something suitably beige.

It was a right faff, but quite chuffed with the end result.

Next job on the camper is to tackle the water ingress, but need warmer weather and longer days for that, so for now the offending external joints have been thoroughly duck taped.

Following on from yesterday's daft question, regarding a Volvo XC90. Jump leads connected under the bonnet did not work ( they weren't the best leads but that was irrelevant). I couldn't find any internal release and Google's suggestion of where to drill through the tailgate was not popular. With a lot of jiggling I managed to get the boot floor up without opening the tailgate, this gave access to the battery. The battery was dead, but I don't think it had helped that the positive terminal was loose. I fished the old battery out and got the new one connected and the car is now alive. I put it all back together, but made sure the floor is now not clipped in properly. I am sure it will now rattle, but at least you will be able to get at the battery.

The non collection, seller delivering caper has occurred. Mrs crap car collector is well happy, she's wanted her own since I've repaired my own GTV. Looks a lovely straight thing too.

Should have got an earlier one with no lights in the bumper.

Excellent. Mazda 323s are generally quite jolly to tool around in. Well, before they had too much Ford in them anyway. Two-number reg plate too! *rubs thighs*
